The Problem With Pastor Mike
Foreign-policy foolishness just won’t suffice.
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NjgzMzYzY2Y1ZjAxNTg5YzAzNzY2MjMwOWYxNWM0ZTc=
By Peter Wehner

Former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee has written an article for Foreign Affairs magazine, the first two paragraphs of which are stunningly silly, misguided, and unfortunately for Huckabee, deeply revealing.

The two opening paragraphs read this way:
The United States, as the world’s only superpower, is less vulnerable to military defeat. But it is more vulnerable to the animosity of other countries. Much like a top high school student, if it is modest about its abilities and achievements, if it is generous in helping others, it is loved. But if it attempts to dominate others, it is despised.
American foreign policy needs to change its tone and attitude, open up, and reach out. The Bush administration’s arrogant bunker mentality has been counterproductive at home and abroad. My administration will recognize that the United States’ main fight today does not pit us against the world but pits the world against the terrorists. At the same time, my administration will never surrender any of our sovereignty, which is why I was the first presidential candidate to oppose ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty, which would endanger both our national security and our economic interests.

Where ought one to begin untangling this unholy mess?

During recent primary campaigning, John McCain came out of the global warming closet, so to speak, into which it seemed he had gone to hide his passion for the Left’s new signature issue. Alert voters must have been wondering, where’s the John McCain who promised to ride this issue to further “maverick” glory, the man who not so long ago whispered in the Natural Resources Defense Council’s ear “Campaign finance reform took us seven years. This may take longer, but we’ll stay at it”?

First we restrict speech, then we ration energy. It just makes sense.

Whatever the reason for this silence on “the greatest threat facing mankind”, we now know that the new, emboldened John McCain is back to bang the alarmist drum, if relatively slowly. ....[SNIP]

...McCain is not alone in his pursuit of the alarmist agenda. Another candidate has decided that the way to handle the issue is to follow safely in the senator’s wake. Mike Huckabee also now supports Kyoto-style energy rationing. He was against it before he was for it, however, correctly noting not too long ago that it sounds “a bit like buying indulgences from the ancient church”. In the same interview Huckabee announced he opposes an alternative, the carbon tax, because it “sounds too much like a tax.” Gotta get up pretty early to slip one by ol’ Huck.

Mike ‘The Huckster’ Huckabee

The Huckster has no formal education nor experience suitable to prepare him for the presidency. According to one of his own aides his method of governance was merely putting out fires with no planning or forward thinking at all. The Arkansas republican leadership have quite alot to say about the Huckster, so much so, that several of them went to Iowa to warn the voters there about this con artist.

Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR): Governor Huckabee enjoyed a meteoric rise in the polls in December 2007, which prompted a more thorough review of his ethics record. According to The Associated Press: “[Huckabee’s] career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.” And what was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down.

A prominent national GOP insider tells Politics1 that he believes Morrisdespite his claims to the contraryis paid for his services through Huckabee media consultant Dick Dresner. According to the source, Morris purportedly gets piece of all Huckabee campaign polling revenues, media commissions and consulting fees through money paid to Dresner’s firm. Explaining the relationship, Huckabee told one GOP pollster: “I feel like I want to take a shower after I meet with him, but Morris is a smart guy and I need him.” http://www.politics1.com/blog-1207.htm

Endorsement from a Liberal Elected Official: A Time To Embrace - “I can tell you that for a long time, I have felt the strongest Republican -certainly in Ohio -would be Mr. Huckabee. Early on, people were surprised that I would say that because he was not registering in the polls. But I know him, I’ve met him. He’s a very likable guy. He’s been a governor. A Baptist minister. But he’s the kind of combination of conservative views in some ways, but very, almost liberal views in other ways. He’s a very socially compassionate man who obviously has concern for the poor and the working middle class, while at the same time, having rather conservative views when it comes to a matter like abortion or gay marriage. ... I think of all the Republican candidates, Mr. Huckabee would be my personal choice.”

December 17, 2007 The Huckabee Hustle By Selwyn Duke

Pete Wehner at NRO took issue with the first two paragraphs of a Huckabee essay in Foreign Affairs magazine, particularly the claim by Huckabee that we’re too mean around the world; we’re trying to dominate the world, and we need to be more like a top high school student, modest about our abilities and achievements, generous, and then we will be loved. Mark Steyn on Huckabee: “...Where I part company with Huck’s supporters is in believing he’s any kind of solution. He’s friendlier to the teachers’ unions than any other so-called “cultural conservative” which is why in New Hampshire he’s the first Republican to be endorsed by the NEA. His healthcare pitch is Attack Of The Fifty Foot Nanny, beginning with his nationwide smoking ban. This is, as Jonah Goldberg put it, compassionate conservatism on steroids big paternalistic government that can only enervate even further “our culture.” So Iowa chose to reward, on the Democrat side, a proponent of the conventional secular left, and, on the Republican side, a proponent of a new Christian left. If that’s the choice, this is going to be a long election year.” http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1964686/posts?page=74#74

No surprises here. Huckabee is a Christian Socialist—a throwback to the Bush years of social conservatism and economic liberalism. Compassionate Conservatism on steroids. Like Bush, he never even tried to cut spending or resist spending increases as governor. On top of that, he is a Nanny-stater on par with Michael Bloomberg. Just recently he agreed that the federal government needs to “do something” about obesity.

I will never vote for Huckabee. If he is the nominee against Obama, I won’t cast a presidential vote. It would be better to have Obama in office to increase the margin of Republicans in Congress than have Huckabee as president and have the Dems retake control. Compassionate Conservatism needs to stay dead.

>>>Huck’s response - Investigate the Club for growth. Who gave them this money to attack me?<<<

Now we know where Nancy Pelosi got the idea of calling for an investigation of the opponents of the Ground Zero Victory Mosque.

Huck and Nancy have some differing views, but IMHO are rather similar when it comes to character and truthfulness.

Hucakabee’s shameful lies and distortions about his role in setting Maurice Clemmons free to kill 4 cops have forever branded him a despicable liar in my book. He lied or distorted about how long Clemmons really would have served without the clemency (it would have been about 27 years, not 108 as Huckster claimed).

He also claimed that he only commuted the sentence to 44 years, and didn't necessarily intend for him to be released, when he commuted the sentence to the EXACT number of DAYS to make Clemmons immediately eligible for release.

I wouldn't vote for Huckabee for dog catcher, even if his opponent was Michael Vick.
