On January 10, 2011, former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tom Delay, was sentenced to three years in jail for his participation in a money laundering conspiracy. Now, his attorney blames the Tea Party, in part, for his conviction.
DeLay's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, explained the Tea Party connection by saying, "We went to trial on the very day people across the country, voters, rebelled against politics." While DeLay presumably does not differ much ideologically from the Tea Party, their inconveniently timed uprising might have irritated liberal jury members, who took their wrath out on Delay.

I smell a meme coming....
And rush and palin and beck?
I read this as the lawyer criticing the liberal jury, not the Tea Party movement; that the jury consisted of liberal members. Beware of lib media.
Current events influence jury results all the time. Prosecution chose the venue because they wanted the notoriously foaming at the mouth liberal residents of Travis County judging the case. DeLay’s attorney is probably right.
His attorney is making excuses like a Liberal. It didn’t help that the jury decision was backed up to Thanksgiving Holiday either. Wondering how much that had to do with it.
GEEZ! Wondering if I can blame the Tea Party for the Drivers Side door handle breaking on my wifes car today.
Too bad Abramoff won't be able to keep him company.
DeLay is no hero to conservatives. He was weak on Border Security/Illegal Alien Amnesty....and he was a hardcore Commie Free Trader....his pushing of CAFTA while as majority whip was disgusting....and his dealing on that vote would make Nancy Pelosi envious.
No surprise that The Sickle would be blaming Tea Party because he got convicted. Only a fool or a commie thinks DeLay was some conservative hero
Boy howdy, just think what’ll happen if them thar tea party folks ever get their hands on Karl Rove’s weather machine!
/shakes head at the absurdity of it all.
Tea Party’s fault? Lame.
Your spot on Mark (as usual). Liberals are totally irrational, which explains it fully.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
This jury was right.
The Republican Party needs DeLay like they need Mark Foley, Jack Abramoff, Ralph Reed, Grover Norquist, David Frum, etc.
I suppose his client's guilt had nothing to do with it.
Let's see....left side of the car.....YUP!! Them violent right wing TEA Partiers musta done it!!!
No. Tea Party's accomplishment! Another political scumbag bites the dust, and if the Tea Party gets credit, all the better!
did I miss an armed rebellion or something?
Rather than blame his poor defense, DeLay’s lawyer blames the Tea Party Revolt. Oh, I got it. We should have delayed the revolt for DeLay’s trial and sentencing and then lived with the Marxist’s controlling the House, Senate and Presidency for two more years. I guess DeLay is more important than the country.
DeLay picked a lawyer who is either a colossal RINO or a demrat. My respect for DeLay has diminished to zero if he approved his lawyer blaming the Tea Parties. I hope DeLay uses his jail time to reflect on his life and make changes where necessary. If I were him the first thing I’d do is fire the lawyer and disown the Tea Party disparagement.
Wow, can’t believe the detractors here. Yeah, his lib side is sad but this trial should have every conservative crying fowl. This whack job liberal prosecutor went after him on a technicality in the law. He was not judged by his peers, but by his enemies. As it stands, no conservative could get a fair trail in Travis county.
I believe it was his fault that Clinton wasn’t removed from office after impeachment. The house was supposed to deliver the articles of impeachment the next day. He held off for months giving the left time to spin it to “it’s all about sex”. I wrote him a letter demanding he send the articles over immediately and never got a reply.
Truthfully, he’s like a lot of them. He went to cash in. That said, I don’t think he’s guilty of this particular crime. What he did was not a crime.
This is a lawyer talking, he doesn’t care about anything but winning, they would sell their mother to get a win.
“I read this as the lawyer criticing the liberal jury, not the Tea Party movement; that the jury consisted of liberal members. Beware of lib media.”
I agree. If anything, the lawyer is blaming the liberal jury for letting their irritation at the Tea Party movement unfairly influence their decision against Tom DeLay.
The Tea Party stands defiantly against the type of crony capitalism we saw with the banking lobbyists in bed with their congressional accomplices.
DeLay was instrumental in making whores of most Republican congressmen with the johns located on K Street.
I'd say that the Tea Party and DeLay were on opposite sides of one of the major Tea Party issues.
This is Yahoo trying to bait the right into starting a disagreement among themselves.
Ha! I like the way you think :-)
That’s what I took from it too. The liberal jury took their anger out on Delay.
Oh...my...GAWD!!! What can one do but fall out laughing?! Incredible...gobsmacked!
The left... Az republicans wetting pants running away from office... now Delay!!!
I would hope that the right could all agree on at least a few things like the 2nd Amendment and that DeLay is human scum.
But I guess I'm being too optimistic there.
Keep after 'em sir!
Weather up here sucks...Yup, must be the Tea Party’s fault! (sarc)
No, he really isn’t blaming the Tea Party. He is essentially saying that the liberal jury members took out their anger at the Tea Party movement by recommending jail time for Delay.
Was the jury not a representative group of DeLay's peers? Not enough whores, criminals, and lying cheats in the jury pool?
When all of the Democratic human scum are in jail, them we'll talk.
At the time, Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tom Delay pushed through more spending and big government bills than the Democrats could manage to do.
He should go to jail for that.
He’s blaming the liberal jury, plain and simple. Liberals get angered over anything, Tea Party included. Liberals will always have someone to blame for their actions, Tea Party or no Tea Party. Anyone who didn’t learn that in the past few days is an idiot.
Apparently there was enough there for the demrats to get a hook into DeLay. He played the DC games and got burned. We all know he did nothing more or less than most them when it comes to skirting and/or crossing the legal line. He was close enough or over the line enough to open himself to the charge(s).
It isn’t fair, a liberal would whine, but that’s politics in America today.
Ya can’t get pregnant if you don’t screw around. You make it hard to impossible to be to make a criminal charge stick if you don’t break or stretch the law in the first place.
I thought he was charged by a Dem prosecutor, tried in a Dem stronghold and sentenced by a Dem judge. They were looking to smack DeLay no matter who said what and when. But I DO believe that you’re right.
Why do people think they have to defend this man just because there’s an (R) next to his name? He is crooked political scum, the ultimate in career politician. There is nothing conservative about him whatsoever!
When this took place there were no laws and it was common practice in BOTH parties. It took EIGHT grand juries to get an indictment.
I thought that when this took place there WAS no law and BOTH parties transferred funds this way.
I didn't opine about Mr. Delay. I certainly don't share you venom for him though. I do assume his attorney will offer the most aggressive defense available to him though.
And no, I don't consider a murder of 0bozo zombies to be a jury of his peers.
I haven’t read any defense of Delay’s actual crime on this thread. Most agree he that committed a crime. What people take issue with are the prosecutor’s and judge’s motives and the jail sentence.
Amen. DeLay and Fat Hastert along with GWB were able to push through more big govt BS than I care to remember. For that, I would approve of DeLay’s sentence not for campaign contributions he raised in his PAC.
Last night my cats had a fight, I forgot and left the backyard faucet running this morning and at lunchtime I spilled some corn - obviously the teaparty caused ALL of this.
I’ve read a lot of defense of him in other threads. Mostly it has to do with “Well, Rangel didn’t go to jail so Delay shouldn’t go to jail.”
Of course, these same people will then go into yet other threads and proclaim that relative morality is a liberal falsehood.
Maybe it was. Juries usually do the right thing inspite of the lawyers (I include the Judge in that too). I have not looked into the case. I just recall that the Prosecutor forum shopped the case.
