[Reaganite Republican]

The Animals were an influential English rock group from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, formed in the early 60s. They later in the decade relocated to the bustling London scene.

Known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, the band is best known for timeless classics such as "The House of the Rising Sun", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", and "It's My Life" (below).

The Animals presented a unique blend of rock-oriented pop hits along with R&B material to fill out the albums.  Considered in the U.S. as part of the British Invasion, The Animals underwent numerous personnel changes over the years and like so many others of the era, suffered from poor business management. 

Later -under the name Eric Burdon and the Animals- they moved to California and yet again achieved commercial success, this time as a psychedelic rock band.  Hits of this era include "San Franciscan Nights" and "Sky Pilot". Guitarist Andy Summers was with the band in this period, who later went on to found The Police along with Sting and Stewart Copeland.

The band broke up in 1969, with the cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" released subsequently.

The original Animals lineup had a brief reunion in 1977 and then again in 1983. There have been several partial regroupings since then under various names, along with legal wrangling over the rights. The Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994...

I knew someone who played in a local band in the USA back then. They would go to the port and get the newest Beatles records from guys on ships. It allowed them to play the songs at sock hops before others.

It was actully my uncle Ted who played in a (skiffle) band.

Yeah, I read a story about how Jagger and Richards re-met as teens and started playing together then...

Jagger had an armload of blues and C. Berry records under his arm on the train and Kieth just flipped at the sight... it was so rare for someone to obtain such stuff in any quantity, and obviously Mick had put significant effort into scraping it up

They knew each other as little kids but hadn’t seen each other in years and that got them talking music right then and there... they had a lot to catch up on suddenly

In my shelf of “to read” books is this one about the guy who is supposed to have “perfected” the top 40 radio format. I was always a bit too poor forty years ago to buy a whole lot of music, so I listened mostly to the radio.

Hell, now that I’m solvent enough to afford to buy the stuff, it’s available for nearly free!

I always thought that song had one of the most unusual lead guitar lines I've ever heard in a "Top 40" song. Definitely influenced by the mid '60s San Francisco sound with a little Indian raga/sitar coloration mixed in, and punctuated by a British invasion backbeat.

And of course the first rock song any learning guitarist tries to play is the House of the Rising Sun.

Which is a traditional delta blues song so old nobody even knows who the author is.

The animals did a great version, but it always bothered me that they somehow have gotten credit for originating the song.
