Astrologers Deem and Pass a New Zodiac Sign
The Looking Spoon ^ | 1-14-11 | Jared H. McAndersen

Posted on 01/15/2011 12:15:50 PM PST by The Looking Spoon

I've read a few things that it all may be a hoax, but as we all probably know by now there apparently is a new sign, I called it out...not that you wont be able to recognize it, ObamaCare is easier to read...

Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18 - May 13
Taurus: May 13 - June 21
Gemini: June 21 - July 20
Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10 - Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16 - Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30 - Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23 - Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 - Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 - Jan. 20

I'm not going to elaborate any further because I'm not a trained astrologist. I don't want to pontificate on these things because your astrological sign has a lot to do with your identity. Which is worrisome for me because Socrates said "know thyself," and that's a problem because my new sign is the new guy on the list. I can't even pronounce it, let alone know what it will do to my soul.

......I don't even know who I am anymore.

Another reason this stinks is if you thought Leos, for example, were douches because a certain sitting president - who shall remain nameless - was one, and you hit your knees praising God that you are a and still get to be a Cancer....after you explain to Him what a Zodiac is...following this change, do you think he'll answer your prayer to change it all back because said president is now a Cancer too?

People actually use this crap to determine their futures via horoscope and figure out their relationships with other people based on which sign they're most compatible with.

And now it's all about to change with the snap of a finger because of some sign nobody can even begin to pronounce, which is probably why they left it out in the first place.

For people who believe this stuff, this should put truth to the lie that it's totally meaningless. Not that most people needed to be told that in the first place, but a lot of people believe in its power.

Considering that astrologers are a typically liberal bunch, I wonder what they think this all means relative to they way they poop themselves over the so-called "war on science" conservatives wage against issues like global warming (My horoscope will tell me how much you hate science).

On a different note...Hey University of Arizona...what's your new sign?

There is one but it covers about half the sky , so we don’t notice it that much.

Oh, the “deemed” it, did they. IF, and it’s a big IF, the stars have any influence on human births, changing the names and dates of the signs does not change where the stars were aligned on the day of one’s birth.

How does this affect the passing of the great year which has used 12 zodiac signs since well before the time of Ptolemy and Christ even? Are we actually in the age of Aquarius now or are we further back in the age of Pisces? I don’t think I care for this. It breaks with over 2,000 years of tradition.

I’ve been a Virgo for - well, many years. Now I’m suddenly a Leo? Leo is fine, but I just don’t feel like a Leo. What’s the story? The change probably applies to those born under the new Zodiac, say, in the last year. So I’m probably still Virgo. :-)

Here's a screen shot from my Starry Night software showing the position of Ophiuchus in the sky this morning with the "daylight" option off, so the sun is shown as a yellow spot on the green line of the ecliptic. The bright spot between Ophiuchus's feet is Venus. You can see that the ecliptic passes through Ophiuchus's feet and by appearances it is as much "on the zodiac" as Scorpius. Ophiuchus means "serpent wrestler" and the head and tail of the serpent are the constellations Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda.

The ecliptic itself doesn't change its position in the sky. It is the celestial equator which precesses with the earth's axis, so this has nothing to do with the perennial controversy caused by the signs drifting away from the constellations as they appear in the sky.

I note that Ptolemy, in his astrological work TETRABIBLOS, attributes the significance of the signs to their correlation with the solstices and equinoxes, and separately mentions the influence of various stars in the zodiacal constellations and others, including Ophiuchus.

BTW, I noticed an astrology item on the TV news last night, and I suppose it was about this, although I didn't really catch it.

The dates given seem to correspond to when the sun is actually in the constellations of the zodiac. This is astronomical information, not astrological. The astrological signs differ by about a month because of the precession of the equinoxes--the place where the sun crosses the equator going north each year slowly makes a complete circuit about once every 26,000 years, but astrologers still use the signs current in ancient times 2000 years ago.

Astrologers give Scorpio one month, but the sun is actually within the borders of that constellation only a few days--the rest of the time it is in the constellation of Ophiuchus (according to the modern boundaries of the constellations).

It kinda messed them up a ways back when Pluto became a non-planet. I’ve always wondered what the ancient astrologers thought when new planets became known.

I go by five planets, and Pluto isn’t one of them. I’m not an astrologer, but I have a book that compares your birthday with another, whether a romantic partner or a business relationship. It’s right on!

The ecliptic itself doesn't change its position in the sky. It is the celestial equator which precesses with the earth's axis

The great year has always been ~26,000 years divided by 12 for the 12 constellations. This equals 12 ages of ~2100 years each. There is no ancient record of a 13th constellation having ever been used to calculate the great year and, as such, this corrupts and confuses over 2,000 years of written history and over 5,000 years of oral traditions. 12 months-12 constellations-12 ages. Ophiuchus, while well known to the ancient astrologers, was omitted for a reason. This is BS IMO.

I don’t believe in the “Daily Horoscopes,” but there is definitely something to astrology. Haven’t you ever wondered why you aren’t like your brother or sister? You were raised in the same home. Or why you get along better with some people and not with others?

I always say that a good astrology book is the best self help book anyone could buy. You find out why you’re like you are and that it’s perfectly okay....and why you can’t change it even though your wife/husband/partner thinks you should! lol

I’m thinking that it’s the DNA that makes you different from other siblings; not like your future is already pre-ordained since the future hasn’t happened yet. But as for people being born certain times of the year (months) there is a psyche difference I think.
