Mammoth video game publisher Electronic Arts has a brilliant ad campaign going for their new survival horror title Dead Space 2. It is built around the generational divide between parents and children, and sons and mothers in particular.
A moms disapproval has always been an accurate barometer of what is cool. So Dead Space 2 was put to the test.
At an undisclosed focus group facility in the heart of conservative America, over 200 moms were recruited to participate in market research. Only, this wasnt market research. The facility was rigged with hidden cameras, microphones, and a crew sitting behind the glass ready to document every single reaction, opinion, and emotion.
Upon arrival, the moms were individually ushered into a room and confronted with three massive monitors, a single chair, and a disembodied voice coming over the speaker system. They didnt know what they were going to see. They were only instructed to be completely honest.
We then subjected each mom to the most action-packed, violent, disturbing footage Dead Space 2 has to offer.
Some were disgusted. Some were shocked. Others couldnt believe what they were seeing. And every single mom hated it.

I loved Deadspace. I’m excited about Deadspace 2. I’m a conservative. My mom doesn’t hate conservatives, but probably wouldn’t much care for the above mentioned games.
I think this article is an excellent look at how the principles of one medium can be used to understand another.
I saw a TV ad for this game with a “your mom hates it” theme and I despise the approach taken in the ad and with the game. These games desensitize the kids to things which would have been considered out of place in polite society.
Maybe there is a good reason your mom hates it.
An odd sort of market research if you ask me.
I really hate EA ever since they bought out the NFL to give exclusive rights to Madden.
NFL2k was on the brink of forever dominating Madden, just like NBA2k dominates Live. Now they can’t even make NFL2k anymore...thanks EA..jerks.
I do my best not to give my money to Electronics Arts.
I don’t play sports games, so it was a non-issue for me. I mean, I occasionally play NHL, but that’s rare because I am too busy shooting zombies. Or Necromorphs.
I understand your reason. It’s like me boycotting...something. I’m sure I did a boycott at some point.
These games should not be played by children. I am very disappointed that they are. But I still enjoy them. It’s as though parents can’t differentiate between what is appropriate for children and what is not.
It’s really sad when last gen NFL2k and even last gen Madden (because that engine was built to compete with NFL2k) play’s better than this generation’s football games.
"Some were disgusted. Some were shocked. Others couldnt believe what they were seeing. And every single mom hated it."
Every single one, eh? Sounds like this video game is an epic fail to me.
I'll trust the unanimous opinion of 200 conservative moms over the hype of some uber-lib video game producers any day of the week.
But hey, I do love these games. The more dismemberment of zombies and spewing splattering monster blood, the better! Dish me up some more Left 4 Dead 2 please! ;)
I’m a big fan of the horror genre, but it’s very, very hard to get me jumpy anymore, because let’s face it, I’ve pretty much seen everything. I bought the original Dead Space, and...it scared the living @&%$ out of me. I was on pins and needles the entire frik’n time I was playing. Most times I could only play for maybe 30 minutes at a time (this coming from a guy known to devour games in a single sitting). If Dead Space 2 is anything like the original, I think this article is overstating the ‘gore factor’. There really wasn’t that much gore, and over the top disgusting factor in the first. What made the game great was that it played on a human’s most primal fears: darkness, confined spaces, never knowing when or where something might jump out at you.
“Oh, yeah? Well, my guitar wants to kill your mama.”
Wonder who the actual purchaser is of the games, the kid or the parents? Certainly Einstein in cubicle 3 did that research... right???? please tell me he did???/
A true American original - FZ RIP
The woman on the right . . . between her eyes . . . is that the Dodge Ram?
