It's Time To Proudly Wear The Deficit Awareness Ribbon
The Deficit Awareness Ribbon
The concept of the deficit awareness ribbon is not new. It was originally created by Rush Limbaugh as a gag when he folded a full dollar bill into a ribbon. James Fitzmaurice, aka the artist Lazlo has taken the idea one step further by making it into Art. Lazlo created his performance art to be worn by others as a constitutionally protected demonstration of free speech, similar to flag burning. It is also a form of participatory art or Social Sculpture
Q and AsThe individual is the first casualty on the road to serfdom. Lazlo
Q: Why should I wear a Deficit Awareness Ribbon?
A: Obviously you are some sort of Neanderthal if you do not know how cool it is to show how much you really care about important issues by wearing ribbons.
Q: Isnt it illegal to destroy our money?
A: Technically yes, it is illegal; but we are doing it for the children, as the financial burden being passed to the youth of this country is a much more onerous crime.
Q: What if someone asks if it is real money.
A: Tell them that it is no more real than the money that congress and the president are printing up each day by the trillions. And, that as a patriotic American, you are actually doing your part to try to stave off inflation by taking a dollar out of circulation and making something useful out of it.
Q: Isnt it a federal crime/couldnt I get arrested.
A: A silly concern; the feds are too busy suing Arizona and figuring out how to enforce 2000 page unconstitutional laws to restrict your freedom, to bother with this.
Q: Is this some kind of Joke?
A: I wish it was. But there really isnt anything funny about what is going on in our government. Get informed, get involved, and remember to vote in November.
The pupose of the deficit awareness ribbon is to engage people in the necessary conversation about where our government is taking us. I believe that most people are rightly concerned about our deficit and the spending that is so out of control that many question how we will ever get out of debt. The burden we are placing on future generations is akin to fiscal child abuse.
If you would like a deficit awareness kit send a self addressed stamped envelope (The low tech method is intentional), please go to this site and follow the instructions. You may also contact me via that contact page.
Please make them up and give some to your friends and wear them proudly. When someone asks you about the ribbon you can direct them to this site to learn more about the spending problem we have in this county and do something that is fun and helps to spread the word that the path we are on is not a good one. Do it with your children and do it for your children.

Symbolic gestures generally, and "cause" ribbons specifically, are useless and overrated.

I’m wearing a plaid ribbon - to remind myself to drink a bottle of scotch before listening to the SOTU.

Yep, we’re just the “little people” and the “flyover people” to them— and we are stupid, to pay the bills the Congress makes us pay!!!

Sure. They can wear it right next to their WIN buttons. Stupid stunts are not the serious response to the fiscal crisis we’re in right now. These stunts...while intended to spur some action usually wind up serving as a substitute for real action.

The morning after that speech, LOSE buttons were all over the floor of the NYSE.

I agree with the "spending problem" you speak of.
However, Rush had a great thought when he created this, and I think we need to stick it into their faces.

So, what was the black and white ribbon worn last night by Congress-critters supposed to signify?
It couldn't have been too significant to conservatives since McCain was wearing one while sitting next to John Kerry, who also wore one.
