Pundits (?) continually bemoaning ther lack of enough money for government schools NEVER consider the effect of dysfunctional family environments; NEVER consider that child bearing and rearing by unmarried/never married mothers, absent any positive presence of a father figure, not to mention absence of the family-affirming custom of marriage, just may contribute to poor performance in schools.

I my area, I looked up the 2000 census data. Not surprising, the areas that had lowest school performance also had the highest rates of divorce and single-parent households. Also interesting, these areas have extremely high poverty rates. The richest part of my county (median household income $300k+) has virtually no divorce and most households have a mom, a dad, and children.
