Is Wisconsin the beginning of a progressive revolution?
examiner.com ^ | 2/17/2011 | Joe Newby

Posted on 02/17/2011 11:44:54 AM PST by FredJake

On Wednesday, about 1,000 teachers in Wisconsin called in sick to protest Governor Scott Walker's proposal to end collective bargaining for state employees.

But the protesters may be doing more harm to themselves than good.

A website calls the governor a "Mini-Mubarak" - a reference to the Egyptian dictator who left office after violent protests in that nation.

The site claims that "Gov. Scott Walker says the Wisconsin National Guard is prepared to respond wherever is necessary in the wake of his announcement that he wants to take away nearly all collective bargaining rights from state employees."

But Politifact rates the claim "Pants on Fire" - meaning the claim is patently false.

Politifact asked the progressive committee Citizen Action of Wisconsin for evidence backing up its claim that Walker threatened to summon the National Guard in response to protests, but found that none of the reports provided quoted Walker directly.

After reviewing what the Governor actually said, Politifact concluded:

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee said Walker "threatened to call out the National Guard if workers protest against these cuts!" The governor spoke of possibly calling up the Guard if state workers didn’t show up for work, but he made no reference to using it in response to protests. And certainly none that would suggest the Guard is authorized to use force to impose anything on state workers.

As the saying goes, one is entitled to their own opinions, but not to their own facts.

Nevertheless, strikers were out in full force carrying signs calling Walker a dictator and comparing him to Mubarak.

One sign shows a target over the face of Governor Walker.

Remember the angst shown by liberals when Sarah Palin's PAC used clip art of targets on certain congressional districts?

Are these teachers calling for the murder...

You bought into it entirely with your ".....NEA crime syndicate....." ~ the only data presented on this thread concerns the BOSSES and they are NOT UNION PEOPLE ~ quite the opposite.

I'm sure all the folks whose salaries have folks up in arms on this thread would be happy to whack the teachers!

Look, a basic standard of discussion on FR is to come to the table with some facts to back up your opinions. We usually trust each other to have done that even if they don't lay them out on the table right away.

Here we have someone at the table lambasting the union and the teachers for highsalaries BUT THE EVIDENCE they brought is about someone else, namely the bosses.

That's just not kosher around here, or halal, or cricket if you like that sort of thing, or what have you.

I'm sorry it's not possible to debate what might be an important topic, but you have to come up with the right data ~ else, not proceed with discussion of the topic until the right data is brought in.

The teachers may be too clever by half. Parents have a choice where to send their kids for school. If the public schools don't perform, they can send their kids to private school.

This is an opportunity for private foundations to step in and provide scholarships, or at least help for families to meet the tuition at the private schools. The teachers might just find that there are not enough kids at the schools at which they were formerly employed, and thus no longer have jobs.

That would be justice.

“...Obama’s campaign arm “Organizing for America” is responsible for most of the chaos, and has been filling bus after bus with protestors and shuttled them to the State Capitol...”

As you may have heard, thousands of union workers have stormed the State Capitol in Wisconsin, and are attempting to bully lawmakers into siding with public employee unions just as Wisconsin’s Governor, Scott Walker, is attempting to instill some fiscal responsibility to that state’s budget.

Politico has broken the news this morning that Obama’s campaign arm “Organizing for America” is responsible for most of the chaos, and has been filling bus after bus with protestors and shuttled them to the State Capitol. This was not a spontaneous uprising - this was an organized effort by Barack Obama to further his radical, leftist agenda.

Below is the “Workers’ Rights” graphic from Organizing for America, Obama’s campaign arm along with a picture from the Wisconsin mob.

Obama’s “Organizing for America” has been promoting the effort to instill chaos in Wisconsin, using email lists, Twitter, and Facebook urging liberals in the state to bully lawmakers into siding against Governor Walker. They sent out 54 messages on Twitter alone!

Is this a repeat of Greece? All the protesters/rioters were commies and government unions screaming for more blood from the stone they dried up. I understand that 49% of the Greek economy is underground, specifically to evade taxes. I didn’t see Greek taxpayers take to the street. Maybe they were getting their revenge some other way. One way or the other, government wants to own eveything, and what better way than to drive the outside of government proles into forced foreclosures and property seizures.

It has to end now on our terms, or it will certainly end on their terms.

There was another thread earlier where a TEACHER was complaining that her salary and that of her husband was going to be reduced by 7% from $17,100 to $15,900 per MONTH. We're not even considering all the vacation time and 'perks'. That's a pretty high salary in my book. People pay outrageous property taxes to support this nonsense, and I consider that 'criminal'. IMHO, of course.

Also the BS mantra, “I could make much more in the private sector.” That is patently false. Say someone works for a company making 150k. Well out of that 150k 300 a month is deducted for healthcare, 1k a month is deducted to pay for retirement and all the taxes they pay. Their healtcare consists of 20 copays and primarily consists of major medical.

With the benefits that afforded some of our “public servants” a 100k salary is actually worth more than the poor schmuck that is earing 150k in the private sector. Also, the well educated employee at ABC company has to pray he stays employed until he can retire and not get laid off.

Aforementioned person has a masters degree in a highly technical field, that most of the teachers majoring in Elementary Ed could not begin to pass. So that is total BS.

I think they also have NO IDEA the kinds of financial setbacks people have endured for the past several years and continue to endure, in the private sector. Many are unemployed or have had their hours and/or pay reduced, benefit costs have increased substantially, the value of their retirement accounts is barely inching back toward what it was several years ago, the employer is not putting toward the retirement plan now, or at a lesser match percentage. We have no cost of living increases, increases just for time in service, nothing like “tenure” or job security. If we are lucky enough to work full time, it is 52 weeks of the year, not 38 weeks per year. If we are lucky enough to have employer-subsidized health insurance, we are likely to pay 50-75% of the premium on our own, not to mention growing deductibles, co-pays, utilization restrictions. We simply cannot “sacrifice more” in higher taxes or larger deficits to appease some unrealistic parasites.

All excellent points. If I may add one other, compamies that have cut back expect remaining employees to pick up the work that was done by those they let go. For most prfessional staff, the work week went from 40-45 hours to 55-60 hours and the constant anxiety that if you objected, you might be next out the door. A mariginally profitable company facing tax and regulatory cost increases doesn’t have much choice, but the long hours and anxiety need to be counted as another hit the private sector is taking for the puffed up public sector.

Then why don't you bring in statistics about teachers, not just their bosses.

Um, the bosses, namely the DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS, are PART of the Union!!!

This is not the beginning of a progressive (sic Marxist) revolution. It is the end of a revolution that has slaughtered tens of millions and brought our nation to the brink of disaster. For 100 years we have been victimized by communist terrorism in the form of government tyranny. Now it is ending. Praise God.

Post of the day. Problem with public sector employment is that it never adjusts. Time to ban all public sector unions and all employees take an across the board 20% pay cut.

Article found right on WASDA website:

February 17, 2011 Update 2

Dear SAA Members:

It looks like we now have confirmation that Senate Democrats have left the state to avoid a Senate floor vote on the Governors Budget Adjustment Bill.

Without at least one Democrat, the Senate does not have a quorum. The latest from WisPolitics appears below. We will keep the membership apprised of new breaking developments in this story.

Erpenbach: 'We were left with no choice'

Sen. Jon Erpenbach told WisPolitics this afternoon Senate Dems left the state in an attempt to force Republicans to negotiate a compromise to proposed changes to the bargaining rights of public employees.

Erpenbach would not disclose where he was or how many of the Dem senators were with him. But he said he believed all 14 were already out of state by early this afternoon.

"We were left with no choice," Erpenbach said.

Asked how long they were prepared to remain outside Wisconsin, the Middleton Dem demurred.

"The question is when are the Republicans going to sit down seriously with the other side on this issue and try to work something out," Erpenbach said. "When are we going to be reasonable about this and slow things down?"

"We have time."

Erpenbach said Republicans should look at how the proposed changes are tearing the state apart and realize a different path is needed.

"This isn't anything that we do lightly at all. This isn't a prank. This isn't a joke. This is Democrats standing together saying slow down."
