Raising taxes will create jobs: AFL-CIO chief
The American Thinker Blog ^ | February 27, 2011 | Rick Moran

Posted on 02/27/2011 2:35:06 AM PST by Scanian

Such economic illiteracy is unusual, even for a labor union chief:

"What's the best way to get Americans back to work? Raise taxes, according to AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. Specifically, he wants to raise the federal gas tax as a means to fund infrastructure spending. 'We need a dedicated source of revenue to create infrastructure in this country,' he tells Aaron Task in the accompanying clip.

"'We need to create jobs. The best way to do that is through infrastructure development.' Simply maintaining the existing infrastructure in this country will cost $2.2 trillion over five years, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers. That doesn't include Obama's objective of high-speed rails and green energy projects.

"Trumka didn't say specifically how much he would raise the gas tax, but mentioned he's shown the President a $256 billion plan to improve infrastructure. If every billion spent on infrastructure creates 35,000 jobs, as he claims, this package would create close to 9 million jobs over the next five years.

"The idea would also improve America's fiscal and competitive future, says Trumka. 'There's also a downstream effect, you put people back to work, they pay taxes, they don't use services, they're contributing, other jobs are created along the way as well,' he explains."

Only the most liberal of Democrats - by definition, the least knowledgeable of how our economy works - believes that raising taxes will create jobs. And considering that the price of a gallon of gas is about to go through the roof because of the turmoil in Libya, raising the gas tax would probably force many Americans to quit their jobs because their commutes would become so expensive, it wouldn't be worth it.

Someone send Trumka a copy of "Wealth of Nations."

Are liberals stupid or are they extremely wily. They have seen the results of their policies. They know what they are doing. After all, aren’t they the smartest people in the world? The only logical conclusion is they want to destroy the economy so they can rebuild it in their own world image.

It's all the selfish/self-serving lifeview that they claim the conservatives suffer from.

He's surely thinking Union jobs, because that's about the only folks who benefit from taxes as far as jobs go - taxes either pay for them, or to create the projects they work on.

You are correct - their image is the goal; the lowliest leech among them will be held in higher regard than the most dedicated and talented producers that fund them.

Parasite Nation being lead by the insane.

Let’s simply raise taxes and all will be OK. Why have we just raised the minimum wage to $20.00 an hour and solve poverty?

While I agree with placing tarrifs on Chinese goods flooding into America, I see us losing a trade war because our own people will demand increased wages to pay for the new cost increases in goods.

What an insane circle Trunpka wants us to run in.

For the Left, and the Democrats/media are the Left, politics is a blood sport. It is all about power. There are no rules. Lies and deception are fair and necessary weapons of battle.

For the right it is a gentlemen's debate about which are the best ideas and who will best implement them.

It is like us taking a hanky to a knife fight. We must stop being patsies. Political correctness is their way to keep us quiet and off balance. To Hell with PC. It is killing us.

The seeds are being planted for indexing federal gas taxes. As oil/gas goes up so does the “revenue”.

"'We need to create jobs. The best way to do that is through infrastructure development.'

Are we not already funding these infrastructure projects for many, many years?

The dirty little secret is dem run state governments funneled that money to other projects as political payola

Another short sighted vision from a “Demoncratic” supporter. Investing in infrastructure creates more jobs, primarily for the unskilled, resulting in more union dues to be diverted to Democrats. Infrastructure should be gradually and continually maintained with revenue set aside much like a depreciation expense from existing tax revenues. Ignoring the claimed “accelerator” effects, the proposed tax increase would rob everyone “a little” to put X amount of money into circulation, a good thing. Unfortunately Americans no longer produce all of the products needed, so Y amount will go to foreign companies, thereby leaving only X-Y dollars circulating in the economy. Short term increases in employment under this plan will produce an increase in the trade deficit and, based on Congress’s record, an even greater deficit. End result for America = game over. Unless we can produce a product with demand worldwide as well as internally, wealth will continue to flow to other nations. We need more dollars in the hands of small businesses and to increase our manufacturing capability. Based on the products I’ve gotten that were manufactured in China (from Craftsman tools to furniture), I’d gladly pay more for a quality product made in the USA. When will Americans wake up and put our technology to work creating products and a safe way to manufacture same instead of farming out the manufacturing sector? We rely on intellectual technology as an export which, as China has demonstrated, is easily stolen and resold more cheaply.

I couldn’t find it published anywhere on the site, so I thought I would share:

It is a slow day in the small Montana town of Circle , and the streets are deserted...

Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit.

A rich tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, lays a $100 bill on the desk and says he want to inspect the rooms before he stays for the night.

1. As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

2. The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer.

3. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Farmer’s Co-op.

4. The guy at the Farmer’s Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her “services” on credit.

5. The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner.

6. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the rich traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves town. No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how Obama’s Stimulus works.

Raising the gas tax would mean that many dues paying rank and file union members will lose their jobs, but fat cat union bureaucrats like Trumka will still get their salaries to tell us all how good it will be when taxes are raised even more.

What does he care about how high gas taxes are. He just turns his gas card receipts into his bookkeeper and we, the taxpayer, pay it for him.

By the way, how much does Turmka's Union pay in income taxes?
