"This stammer got me a home in Beverly Hills...
I'm not about to screw with it now!"

Bob Newhart (Oak Park, Illinois 9.25.1929) is an American comedian, author, and TV/film actor known for a deadpan style and trademark stammering and hesitant delivery. His hugely successful career spans over four decades, and the man is nothing less than an American comedy legend...

Bob Newhart's career was launched by his 1960 comedy album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart -which acutally went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains to this day the 20th best-selling LP of any kind... in history.

Not only did he release an additional ten comedy albums over the next three decades, but Bob Newhart evolved into a huge star with four different TV series, various appearances in films and other television shows.

In college we got together to watch the 1980s Bob Newhart series "Newhart" every Tuesday night, where Bob plays a Vermont innkeeper of "Larry, Darrell, and Darrell" fame- always loved that show.

And here we have a vintage stand up bit of his on
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1969...

He did it without bathroom humor and ‘F’ bombs.

...deadpan style and trademark stammering and hesitant delivery...

Most of us could identify with that and that tangibility insured his success.

The best series finale ever was when he ended his show about the Vermont bed and breakfast, with Suzan Plachet in his bed.
I think the shows were called Bob Newhart Show and Newhart respectively. (Not sure)

I love him, too, but my heart sort of skipped a beat when I first saw this thread.I was afraid it was another obituary. I was relieved when I saw it wasn't, and really enjoyed the clips!

Thanks for posting it.

It was brilliant. I liked both series and it was a neat way to merge them.

Did you see Newhart on NCIS about a month ago?

He played an old Medical Examiner who is suffering with Alzheimer’s.

Chilling to watch.

Yes. All the great comedians have achieved their success without resorting to cheap profanity and crude sexual jokes. The also rans, on the other hand, leave you wanting to shower off.

From "The Khrushchev Landing".....

Presenting a bouquet..."Why does it have to be some body's little kid? Why can't we use midgets?"

I've laughed about that for forty years!

I remember his record with a section called “The Driving Instructor”. It was absolutely hilarious and had me in stitches every time I heard it. Bob is unique and has such class. Rare.

Kind of on the same note ... Tim Conway is a much beloved comedian, also kind of dead-pan like Bob Newhart. Tim Conway's son, Tim Conway Jr., has THE BEST [NON POLITICAL] TALK RADIO SHOW ON THE AIR IN LOS ANGELES. Half the fun is Conway Jr. himself and how he inspires all the crew in the studio, from news and weather reporters to board operators, to participate; I'll bet they love him. The other half is in Conway Jr.'s listeners -- it is a blast to hear them call in. Last night, he was asking for ideas on things a guy over 40 shouldn't do; it was hilarious. He also hosts "What the Hell did Jesse Jackson Say?" on Thursday nights. He plays clips of unintelliglbe things said by Jackson, and invites callers to guess what he said. Absolutly hilarious. All kinds of people call in.

It's on KFI AM 640 weeknights 7-10 p.m., and Saturdays 4-7 p.m. It is an absolute HOOT, reminiscent of the great humor of the Newhart-Conway generation.

Off topic sort of -- but I think it fits here because it's all a great continuation of the same kind of comedy that made Newhart(and Conway!) so loveable. Just a heads-up that

Yes, and they even gave him a telephone scene.
