A massive 8.9 magnitude quake has hit northeast Japan, subsequently bringing a 4m tsunami to long parts of the country's coastline. NHK television reported many injuries and showed pictures of major tsunami damage in the north, with cars, trucks, houses being swept away in Onahama city.
The earthquake rated a absolute maximum value of "7" on the Japanese scale. A 10m tsunami hit Sendai airport in the north-east. Military airplanes were flying over the worst-affected areas to assess the need for rescue efforts and an em,emergency cabinet meeting was under way.
The quake shook buildings in the capital for several minutes and sent people out onto the streets. Japan's NHK television showed black smoke billowing from a building in Odaiba, a suburb of Tokyo.
The quake that struck at 2:46pm was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. Tremors were felt as far away as in the Chinese capital, Beijing.

a- this is the blog section
b- blog posts are as a general rule based on summary from various news sources and assembly of video and other media resulting in a presentation that saves you the time of looking and provides some commentary... as I do
c- I post ALL my Reaganite articles on FR IN FULL, unlike many... no excerpts. I ONLY send FReepers to my site for surveys or videos... otherwise they can read it all in full here at RR if they wish
d- Judging by the response, many people were freshly informed of this unfolding tragedy in Japan by my post when they got their coffee and clicked into FR here... in my mind I provided a needed service at 3am (jmho)
I go to pains to observe the rules, both written and not, here at FR, as to not wear out my welcome... sorry to have offended you

Anyone heard from American in Tokyo? I just wrote to a business friend who lives in Sendai, which is apparently nearest the epicenter. The reports of smoke rising near Odaiba (district on a man made island in Tokyo Bay with offices, hotels, and the huge Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center) related to a quake centered hundreds of miles away is shocking.
