Offutt Air Force Base -a USAF installation near Omaha, Nebraska- is today home to the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), the Air Force Weather Agency, and the 55th Wing of the Air Combat Command, serving as HQ to each.
The base has been with us for some time, and has a storied past: US Army first began flying out of Offutt late in WWI, initially as a balloon field in 1918. It was thus named in honor of World War I pilot and Omaha native 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt in 1924.
Offutt AFB happens to be where the first two atomic bombers were constructed in complete secrecy in 1944-45 -inc. Enola Gay- and was also HQ of the former Strategic Air Command (SAC), home for its associated ground and aerial command centers for the U.S. in case of nuclear war during the Cold War...
And here's the view from the flight pattern on approach into Offutt today: this is precisely what our returning servicemen see when landing. The farmer who owns the land adjacent to the base has been providing a alternating message at the foot of the runway for some time now... word is he uses GPS to get it all squared-up:
Imagine how this must feel to all those servicemen seeing it for the first time, or whenever for that matter: sure is great to see this patriot take the time to show some appreciation... and on behalf of so many of us who feel the exact same way.
Of course, this should have made national news, such an inspiring story of patriotism: alas... in the bizarro-world Obammunist era, we all know why not...

Great post!
I’ll never forget on 9/11 when I heard that Bush was headed to Offutt. I knew the significance of this and that Offutt wasn’t just another Air Force Base.
Words like “Looking Glass” and “Nightwatch” came to mind.
It literally give me a cold sobering chill knowing that something much larger was afoot.

My son and I went to many airshows at Offut AFB and one of the most dramatic sights was the 747 “Looking Glass” flying command post making a pass at about 1,000 ft and then making an almost vertical ascent on full military power...awesome.

Lived in Omaha since 1981 and I never knew about the messages in the fields.
I remember on 9/11, knowing all planes were grounded, and I heard a plane, and I was chilled and shaking until it was later explained that it was GWB.

It is hard to believe we are coming up on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
It will be interesting to see how Obama degrades it.
Perhaps he’ll apologize to Al-Qaeda?

Lived in Omaha since 1981 and I never knew about the messages in the fields. If you drive south on Kennedy Freeway, as you come up to the highway 370 exit ramp, look to your right. You can't miss it.
