Let me first put it out there that, unlike some of my fellow conservatives/libertarians, I dont believe unions are inherently bad, or at least the larger labor movement isnt. In the past, it was a force for good, producing some much needed reforms at a time when some companies were beyond corrupt.
However, I also believe that absolute power corrupts absolutely, and many, if not most, unions have gained absolute power wherever they set up shop.
Take Philadelphia, for example, where the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America is trying to give a business a bad name. Not because they make their employees work backbreaking long hours. Not even because they wont negotiate better wages or benefits. No, its because their landlord wont hire from within their union to do construction work on the building.
Apparently, you hire only union workers in Philly or face the consequences.

Mike, you might want to try reading and posting on a few threads you didn’t start once in a while, too. Otherwise we might get the impression you are just on FR for the site traffic.

That pure, unbridled capitalism is actually what we call 'communism' today.
LOL What a title. They are mob.
Right. The few at the top run the show and dole out the pittance to the masses. The funny is the morons railing against capitalism while not knowing it is what they are promoting.
That implies that monopoly is the ultimate ideal of capitalism. Maybe that's true for many of the individual actors, but it is not the global goal. Capitalism includes the idea of competition and price discovery; the singular condition of monopoly does not.
You are thinking free market capitalism.
Most of those who live in the Philly area know this -- which why sane business will avoid the Pennsylvania Convention Center like the plague.
Great blog, btw.
Its very simple, Unions want the automatic pay deduction that comes out of each pay check!
The Democrats want the support and money from the Unions!

Well, self-aggrandizing idiots come out of the closet all the time. No need for a headline. I’d hide my stupid a$$ back in the closet if I were you.
I had a little chat with a firefighter outside a polling place about 20 years ago. After that conversation I have viewed the firefighter unions as a bunch of flippin Nazi`s. From that day on I have always voted down their pay raises ( when I was able to actually vote for them ) and have also never given a dime to a fundraiser they sponsored. I have a few friends who are firefighters as well, and have told them my story and they have never refuted my opinions on what I was told or felt that day.
And by the way, I was a member (by force) of the Teamsters for 3 years. The Union leadership will sell out members in a heartbeat if the more senior members can line their pockets with more cash and benefits. I experienced that firsthand.
What you will find is consistent terrorist bombings before there were any Muslims anywhere, Marxists, and murder. That's pretty much it.
Oh, no denying this. Most union members are good folk; no doubts about that.
The leadership is something else.
Unions ARE the Mafia. Mine was in the ‘80’s. I belonged to the Laborers. My local, Local 59 of the Mason Tenders District Council of NY was controlled by the Gambino Crime family.
I’ve found that this is a very real problem when it comes to Islamic charities. It’s very hard in that case not to make some connection to a terrorist group (because, how better for them to gain followers than to be charitable?).
Thank you.
LOL. Your tag line is almost poetic irony for this thread. This article is about Philadelphia running aground. Only prudent thing to do is....destroy it.
With tongue firmly, (or not,) in cheek, I tell you that we, in Southwest PA, would hardly miss it and wish it was part of New Jersey.
Better than liberals who never learn.
Check out the Triangle Fire history from 100 years ago exactly yesterday.
OK, there was a need for something to thwart abominable business practices against working people 100 years ago.
But please, the Public school teachers, Policemen, Firefighters, Trash Collectors are oppressed workers?
In 21st century America?
I was not born last night.
I suppose so. How foolishly idealistic of me.
