More gory details have emerged in the case of Kermit Gosnell, a Philadelphia doctor who allegedly made millions of dollars performing illegal abortions at a clinic for over 30 years.

It's now being alleged that doctors at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, which operates two hospitals within a mile of Gosnell's squalid abortion clinic, failed to report the horrific condition of patients who came to them after having seen Gosnell.

Gosnell's defense attorney said seeking the death penalty made little sense as his client is 70 years old and has no prior convictions.

According to a grand jury's report, it's estimated that Dr Gosnell, 69, made almost $1.8 million each year on abortions alone - and most of it was cash from desperate, poor women. That figure does not account for any of the money he took in from allegedly selling illegal prescriptions to drug addicts in his community, including his notable distinction of being one of the top three prescribers of OxyContin in Pennsylvania, something federal authorities continue to investigate.

But when brought before a judge to explain why he and his wife, Pearl, had not hired attorneys, Gosnell claimed to be broke.The judge didn't buy it and refused to appoint public defenders for the couple.

When investigators searched Gosnell's massive, three-story brick home at 32nd Street and Mantua Avenue, they discovered $240,000 in cash and a gun in a filing cabinet in his 12-year-old daughter's bedroom, according to the grand jury report.

Aside from hiding their profits in their little girl's closet, Gosnell and his wife also invested in real estate. Together, they own as many as 17 properties, including a million dollar beachfront home, according to published reports; prosecutors said they know of at least seven. More at phillynews.com

A raid on Gosnell's chamber of horrors turned up blood on the floor and parts of aborted fetuses displayed in jars. "People were practicing without a license. A non-licensed person was administering drugs. The conditions were horrific, uncleanly, just abysmal," a board spokeswoman told ABC News.

Prosecutors believe Gosnell's Philadelphia abortion clinic frequently delivered late-term babies alive. The Philadelphia abortionist then severed their spines with scissors. The fetal bodies, along with staff lunches were stored in refrigerators at the filthy Philadelphia facility. In February 2004, US Senate candidate Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the "alarming news" that "right-wing politicians" had passed a law (prohibiting doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls).

Michelle Obama called partial-birth abortion "a legitimate medical procedure. " She urged supporters to pay $150 to attend a fund-raising luncheon for her husband, who she promised would fight against "cynical ploy[s]" to stop it.

BACKGROUND Legislation was presented on the federal level and in various states called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. It stated all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted. BAIPA sailed through the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote. Even Sens. Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother's right to "choose" stopped at her baby's delivery. The bill also passed overwhelmingly in the House. NARAL went neutral on it. Abortion enthusiasts publicly agreed that fighting BAIPA would appear extreme. President Bush signed BAIPA into law in 2002.

But in Illinois, the state version of BAIPA repeatedly failed, thanks in large part to then-state Sen. Barack Obama. Obama worried aloud that legislation protecting live aborted babies might infringe on women's rights or abortionists' rights.

In 2003, as chairman of the next Senate committee to which BAIPA was sent, Obama stopped it from even getting a hearing, shelving it to die much like babies were still being shelved to die in Illinois hospitals and abortion clinics.

BAIPA passed in 2005.........after Obama left the Illinois Senate.

I fail to see where this is more horrific than the practice of killing babies six days a week. Ask any combat vet and they’ll tell you that the shock and disgust of seeing a dismembered human significantly diminishes with each one. After a few dozen, having a smoke or a cup of coffee with bodies laying all around you isn’t disgusting at all. It’s accepted as normal working conditions.

I am certain that to Gosnell, he didn’t find anything disgusting about killing babies. People paid him to do it because he was “a professional”, the same way we prefer to have “a professional” dentist and doctor treat us.

The big question in my mind is why did they finally decide to prosecute a man whose shoddy business practices was well known in the community.
