I got my SS card back in the early 60s and I know that I didn't have a birth certificate then -- my parents weren't with me nor even knew that I was getting a card. I never saw my birth certificate until ten years later when I had to get a 'certified' copy after being hired out of college by a company that had a defined benifit retirement plan.

I got my SS card when I was about seven or eight. I was living in VA and my great-grandmother was living in FL. She applied for mine and my brothers, and apparently was allowed to do so with no problems. I remember when she gave them to us on a visit to VA.

A home birth can apply for a birth certificate. They must provide documentation from a md-wife or Dr. or pre-natal info. There is a list of stuff required, but they can fill out a form and submit it without all of the supporting proof, and as soon as they bring the proof in and it’s verified a long form birth certificate will be created.
I was born at home. My COLB has more info than obama’s does.
Thing is, if the person applying for the child’s BC (at home birth) does not supply the required docs, the DOH sends them a series of notices to the last know address. At the end of one year, if the docs have not been supplied, the original application is sent to the last known address. I’m sure that a record is kept of the application and the action taken with it, maybe even a photocopy, but a BC would not have been created - the application itself never generated a permanent record.
Well, then... that would be another lie then, as Obama has named the hospital he was born in.

I found out in my initial issue at Ft Benning that SSN’s are based on what state they were issued in, there was a civilian guy giving out our issues of BDU’s and he would say” we have a New York boy here” and I asked how he knew and he said my SSN fell in the range of NY issued numbers.

Interestingly I just went to the .gov website and they state you need proof of:
Citizenship, age, identity (if the child is under 12 the parent needs to be with them and prove THEIR identity.) In addition it says: “Social Security must verify a birth record for all U.S.-born applicants who apply for an original Social Security number. An exception is made for a parent who applies for a baby’s Social Security number at the hospital when the baby is born. To verify a birth record, Social Security will contact the office that issued it.”
Of course, I don’t know what it said back in the 1960s.

No thanks. I've seen threads that stated that the number after Obama's belonged to a dead guy, but not his. I believe many here have confused the issue.
If he had an IL number, people would clamor that he didn’t move to IL until later in life. A NY number would be scorned because “he would have needed one to apply to college”; a Hawaii number would be laughed off the forum. So, which state would be acceptable?
Well, considering HIS HALF SISTER BORN IN INDONESIA has a US SSN which is assigned to HAWAIIAN RESIDENTS, I would assume it would only be appropriate that Obama himself got a SSN reserved for residents of HI and not CT!
