Food Prices Headed Higher: What You Can Do
CBS News' MoneyWatch ^ | April 26, 2011 | Carla Fried

Carnivores, brace yourself for even steeper food price hikes this year than originally forecast. The unholy trinity of rising feed prices, spiking oil costs — it takes money to transport food from farm to table — and increased global demand has pushed the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ratchet up some of its 2011 food price forecasts, with beef and pork prices getting the most costly upward revisions.

Here’s how you might want to rethink your food intake/grocery shopping to deal with the expected price increases:

Stick with chicken. At the start of the year, the USDA said it expected beef prices would rise 4.5 percent to 5.5 percent this year. The new forecast is for a price jump of 7 percent to 8 percent. And it’s not like you haven’t already been paying up, as beef prices are already 12.2 percent higher than they were a year ago. If you’ve got a yen for pork, that’s going to cost you more as well. The USDA has changed its 2011 forecast of a 6 percent price hike for pork to a new expected range of 6.5 percent to 7 percent. Over the past 12 months, pork prices have already increased 11.2 percent.

In news that the chicken lobby is no doubt already plotting an ad campaign around, though, the price hike for chicken remains quite benign: the 2011 forecast stays unchanged at 2.5 to 3.5 percent. If going with chicken doesn’t appeal, it may be time to load up the garage freezer with beef and pork; at least you can lock in today’s prices for at least a few months.

Steam, rather than sauté or fry: The USDA also raised its estimate for inflation for fats and oils by a full percentage point to 6 percent to 7 percent....

Gee..wonder what our obomba voting “friends” say NOW...I told them in Nov 2008 that I was stocking up, and I’m sure they thought I was crazy....not speaking anymore...I think they are now mad and don’t want to admit their idiocy (they are retired.)

Lessee....

I have five different kinds of potatoes coming up right now.

I planted broccoli, 2 kinds of cabbage, 2 kinds of cauliflower and a bunch of herbs today.

In the coming week I hope to get peppers, tomatoes and some melons in, and when the weather really warms, all of my summer squash. My radishes, carrots, peas, onions, spinach, collards and mustard greens are all up and thriving.

In the meantime we continue to average 5 eggs a day so far this month with a total approaching 600 eggs so far this year...

Lots one can do...

I’m pretty lucky at drawing elk hunts, and I hear Governor Martinez is going to make sure more draws go to in state applicants, so maybe my freezer will be stuffed with elk. Some cat fish, tuna fish and chicken can augment that. I just pray that people can hold out until we get the austerity facilitators are out of office.

I’m thinking of getting a couple of rabbits...tastes like chicken...takes less space, doesn’t violate neighborhood “rules”....like those will matter soon.

The squash and zuchinni plants themselves have been growing great for the last month and about a meter across. The beans are growing stupid fast, and the sunflowers are close to a foot tall. We'll have salad greens in a couple of weeks.

You are lucky, Spring has barely started here and it is still snowing.

I’ve got a couple of squirrel condos in my cherry trees out back...a squirrel is only good for about 400 calories, but one sure makes a pot of beans or rice taste mighty fine....

Our state Game and Fish commission voted to raise the whitetail deer limit from 5 to 6 for the next season (beginning in September). If food prices continue their current trend, I can see myself being somewhat less selective in the deer I choose to harvest while hunting...

There’s a joke in “Stranger in a Strange Land” where Jubal says that many things seem to be instinct are not, but he’s glad they are thought to be. He says he’s glad most people think it’s against human instinct to eat other humans, or else he couldn’t trust some of his neighbors given the price of chuck.

Every time fuel prices and food prices tick higher, this nation is made a tick less stabile. To me - higher prices (caused by government policies, which is 99% of the current problem) is an act of treason.

Went grocery shopping earlier today, the chicken was among the more expensive meats!

If meat prices keep going up like they have been, I might have to talk to mom and dad about the possibility of raising rabbits.

(And before anyone gives me the vegan lecture, I am missing several enzymes needed to digest plant-based proteins. This means I am biologically a carnivore, and I have the lab tests to prove it.)
