Yesterday, Reuters reported that in Action Comics #900, Superman is mulling over renouncing his American citizenship and becoming a citizen of the world. Last year, Archie Comics announced that there would be an openly gay character hanging out in Riverdale. Last season, the NFL had players wearing pink gloves and cleats to bring awareness to breast cancer.
I hate to sound all unpoliticalcorrectthink, but I am sick and damn tired of being preached to when all I want to do is enjoy myself.
I know, I know, I'm selfish, I'm heartless, blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda. Yes, I know there are problems in this world. Got it. But does the world's problems have to be advertised in every medium ? Why can't I read a comic book without being preached to about social justice or the flaws of American foreign policy ? Why can't my kid read an Archie comic book without being preached to about equality for homosexuals ? Why can't I watch the Miami Dolphins embarrass themselves without being reminded of the horrors of breast cancer ?
Here's a news flash for DC Comics, Archie Comics, and the NFL: (And this goes double for the bourgeois socialists in Hollywood) We The People want to be entertained. We don't want or need to be preached to every waking moment. If the entertainment industry would stop being so self-righteous for a second, it would realize that We The People are not idiots. We know the world sucks and sometimes we need an escape from it.
God help us all.
Supercomrade is on the way.
What next? Bizzaro gets elected as President?
Oh, wait a minute...
Yeah...Bizarro Reagan. Instead of the individual, we have the collective. Instead of free market capitalism, we have socialism. Instead of small government, we have bloated bureaucracy.
Well he was a Reporter now wasn’t he? Anyway the media are already citizens of the world and so is Obama. Comrade Kent?
I give in, I’m a nerd, too. I forgot all about that graphic novel...
PS— Say hi to Captain Marvel for me....
Neal Boortz's replacement today pointed out that Superman got honorary citizenship from every country in the United Nations in Superman, issue C-31, November 1974.
So I guess that means he's a citizen of every country except for the US and Switzerland (and a few new ones which joined the UN after 1974).
While he is at it (changing his citizenship) he should also change his name to Stupidman.
Ultimate in nerdom question: Was it the Earth 1 or Earth 2 Superman ?
Not a bad rant for a new arrival.
I have commented on other threads how these days, it seems like everybodys got a gimmick.
Something. Something to sell you. Something to convince you. Some group/person that’s got a major problem and needs your help, a real tear-jerker...
Plastic, plastic, plastic. Agendas and victims everywhere. You can’t get away from them, they will chase you down and haunt your very soul.
I listen to a conservative Christian radio station off and on all day and two days ago, there was a message about the cross-dresser/trans-gender/*whatever* who got beat up in McDonalds.
Not once but *many* times, the Christian preacher referred to the beaten up male creature as she, “her” and woman.
I was mortified.
I do not care how much butchery and surgery is performed on a body-dysmorphic individual, until they successfully change every single chromosome in their body to the opposite one, theyre *still* the man or woman they were born as, originally.
To hear this PC sermon was heart breaking.
I know I already put my 2 cents in, but this topic really hits home with me. Another thing I can’t stand is all these businesses that advertise that they are “green” and the endless sponsoring of various “charitable” events, bike rides for various cancers, mailing in seals from yogurt etc. It never stops. It makes the whole world seem like one big disaster that can only be saved by me spending money on their product. It has the opposite effect on me.
I stopped watching regular, non-news TV altogether.(Unless it’s the NFL, which is becoming unbearable in own right.)I know this sounds crazy as hell, but to me, it’s becoming almost like liberal mind control.
I don’t care what that illegal alien does! He was never a citizen anyway.
Not to sound all Glenn Beck-like, but provessivevik thinking has invaded the churches and synagogues. See Sojourners and the Jewish Funds For Justice for further details.
I always get the feeling that companies aren't showing support for sufferers of diseases so much as exploiting them. "Ad Exec: The disease of the year is breast cancer. We'll cut our red dye usage by 50% to get pink, print a ribbon on the packaging and sell the hell out of how much we oppose cancer. We should net $250 million from it. Any other diseases? How about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis? What do you mean that the New York Yankees already have Lou Gehrig's disease trademarked? Run it by legal before we start fighting the the Steinbrenner family."
Anything that advertises itself as “green” will automatically insure that my “green” will stay in my pocket out of prinicple, even if it’s a product that I would find useful.
“. . . its becoming almost like liberal mind control.”
And you’re right again. The “announcements” or advocacies are never for things I care about.
Even one of my favorite shows, “Bones”, pushes that stinking Prius by integrating the car into the show. Last night, it showed the car parking itself. Moments after that, a Toyota ad played. It was for the Highlander. The ad series for the Highlander is one of the most offensive I have seen in a long time. There are several, all with the same theme - parents are uncool and need their children to choose their vehicles for them.
We’re still in a semi-free market. Let your money speak for you. Don’t give in.
He doesn’t have a valid birth certificate, like a certain Kenyan whose name escapes me right now....
I am on your side about Superman and Archie, I don’t see breast cancer awareness as being as insidious as the other two examples.
I may be showing my age, but I stopped reading comics when Magneto became leader of the X-Men.
It’s not so much the money as it is the angst.
So you feel sorry for starving children, you feed the children. Then, no matter what you do, there are even more starving children.
Combine that with the angst produced by advertisers. NEVER believe, even for a second, that advertisers are doing you any sort of favor.
They are there for one purpose: to make you unhappy with what you have so that you will go out and do something different. That seems to me to be pretty much the bottom line. Perhaps I’m a bit too cynical, but if I am, it’s not by much!
We are a people who are basically being programmed to be unhappy.
He is an illegal alien working for the Mainstream Media using a fake identity.
Yes, I know that but *this* station has been steadfast in its biblical principles ever since I was a little kid.
It’s the first time they’ve ever spewed *anything* like this.
Ordinarily, their sermons on sexual aberration are calls to repentance and fleeing the lifestyle.
They have a *lot* of programs for helping “gays” get the mental and spiritual help they need.
Never once have I heard them give any “legitimacy” to trannys.
I guess I’m just very disappointed with them.
Except I don’t have hippie-trash long hair.
Believe me, It’s not that I have anything against those suffering from breast cancer, or that I don’t want to see a cure, but when I want to watch football, I want to watch football, nothing more. Nothing more is needed.
I know the feeling....
Clark Kent= Zsa Zsa Huffington ? Christiane Amanpour ?
“Perhaps Im a bit too cynical, but if I am, its not by much!”
There is no such thing as being too cynical.
Liberals are incapable of walking in another person's moccasins - - but wouldn't it be wonderful if the insensitive jerks on the left could imagine what their world would be like if every movie they watched preached a conservative line?
And every comic book series took stands against people who welcomed illegals? Or laughed at gun control 'nuts'? Or if TV shows routinely mocked union members? Would THEY want to pay to see that 'entertainment'?
Then again, few have ever met a liberal elite capable of empathy...
Superman was an illegal alien “coyoted” in by his old man in a space ship.
They never will. It’s genetically impossible for libs to ever think like the rest of us.
