Daniels' listening tour
Politico ^ | 5/4/2011 | Ben Smith

Posted on 05/04/2011 8:57:39 PM PDT by curth

The salons of Manhattan's Upper East Side are an odd place to launch a Republican campaign:

On Tuesday, at the Gilded Age Upper East Side mansion that houses the nascent Bloomberg View, Daniels lunched with a baker’s dozen of journo-pundits ranging politics-wise from rightish (Peggy Noonan, Ramesh Ponnuru) and leftish (Michael Kinsley, Josh Marshall) to neitherish (Mark Halperin), and outlet-wise from mass market (George Stephanopoulos) to niche market (me). Afterward, the informal consensus of the leftish contingent was summed up in this exchange:

“If we have to have a Republican…” “…this one seems like he’d be better than the others.”

I would much rather take Newt if it came down to it. At least he is a brilliant RINO.

why is it that it seems obvious that Daniels is gonna eclipse MITTSTEr soon as the ESTABLISHMENT favorite ... and be the new media darling of ‘11, setting up a Palin vs. Daniels showdown in primaries?

Not that MITT will drop out, he will fight state=by=state, but with only a victory in NV and a poor showing in SC and FLA ... he will become a non-factor.

What a pathetic group of "journalists".

I’m out here pretty desperate. The Anybody But Obama, who ever can beat him and win, is my guy/gal. This makes me fatally flawed in most circles. Daniels reportedly just said that he was not ready to debate Obama on foreign policy, however. (According to hotair). Personally, I don’t think Obama is ready to debate his own foreign policy.

The point is that DEMOCRATS are looking for a change in the presidency and that fact is getting increasingly obvious. They are looking for a truce among our candidates to help them cross over with hat in hand on election day.

it gets better. Calls to increase taxes and ties himself to Bush:

More than any other potential Republican candidate, Daniels has focused on the debt and the deficit. He calls it the new red menace — a tidal wave of red ink. But he's also challenged Republican orthodoxy by saying Republicans have to be ready to compromise, and that everything should be on the table, including taxes. "If you believe as I do that this is a republic-threatening issue, that we cannot remain either prosperous or influential in the world if we go broke, and that the arithmetic — forget philosophy for a minute — if the arithmetic says that's where we're headed," he says, "then I think that leads any patriotic citizen to the conclusion that you will do what it takes." Now, Daniels has to decide if he's willing to do what it takes to run for president. On Tuesday, he said he'd talked to former President George W. Bush about it — he also said that no sane person would like to run.

Yeah, I bet the Left would just love to see the meek, mild-mannered little squirt Daniels debating the tall, arrogant, slickster BHO.

“I would much rather take Newt if it came down to it. At least he is a brilliant RINO.”

Yes, he’d be unshakeable (and intellectually superior) in debating BHO. Debates are critical and can win or lose elections (Nixon-Kennedy, McCain-BHO, Reagan-Carter, Reagan-Mondale, to name a few).

“Listening tour”, Bah! The average voter is an idiot! All this shows me is that Daniels is a sleaze who is trying to discern wind direction. A true leader, I’m sure. Bob

I think you have me confused with another poster. (But I agree with you that many, many voters are idiots - look who’s now in the White House - they’re very shallow, and that’s another reason why debating skill against BHO is one of my top two priorities).

“Anybody But Obama, who ever can beat him and win, is my guy/gal”

You’re not alone by a long shot. The worst of ours is FAR better than BHO - he’s that dangerous. It’s just that he’ll be very hard to beat (imho) and it’s going to take an exceptionally strong alpha persona with flawless oratory skills and nerves of steel to stand up to both Obama and the hostile (but hugely influential) media.

Sounds like Newt. :) Newt has been to a few rhetorical rodeos and he is smart enough to take on Obama. I know, I’m just sayin’. :=D

The establishment’s candidates have sucked in the past, and will continue to suck. Romney, Gingrich and Daniels are in the mold of Dole and McCain, and George W, to some extent. “Good enough” in 2012 is NOT good enough. We need someone on fire for America in this age of political upheaval and the collapse of the dollar. In my mind, that person is Sarah Palin. Some others are good, but she is far and away the best we have, or *could have*, IMO. I’m looking to Alaska this time. Bob
