One of the first e-mails I got when my plane landed Monday had just two sentences: "Are you back?" and "Don Lemon is gay." A friend wanted to fill me in on all the "breaking news" I'd missed while in the jungles of Brazil, but in the most casual way possible. Like "Your dog ate my memo" and "The world went on without you."
Thing is, the world -- well, the heteronormative one, at least -- is supposed to stop when someone previously packaged as "straight" suddenly bends the rules, but these days the bell curve appears to have switched things up a bit. So when CNN anchor Don Lemon announced via Twitter (linking to an interview with the New York Times about his new book, Transparent) that he was gay, the sound of the earth shattering wasn't so loud. It was more like a hammer on a mattress.
On Monday, Lemon told CNN colleague Joy Behar that he's never lived a double life. "I don't really know about the down low because I haven't played that game ... I was born gay, just as I was born black." I'm betting that his friends picked up on that years before he ever came out to them. Actually, I'm hoping that they did.

I think the only really interesting thing about this is why liberals are even interested in anyone else’s sexual orientation. The only people’s sexual orientation that really interests me is mine and my husbands. Pretty much that’s it. But the entertainment industry and liberals (and that would pretty much be one and the same) seems to have a fatal attraction with sexual orientation. Is that a mental illness of some sort?
My first response would be- I’m sorry to hear that, is he getting help?
Exactly the same response I’d give if you told me a friend
thought they were Queen Victoria or Superman. Brain malfunction-very sad.
A childhood friend of mine announced he was gay a while back but but it wasn’t exactly a surprise. Most 13 year old males didn’t get so excited about the marriage of Charles and Diana the way he did.
My first response would be, "Who is Don Lemon?", and my second would be, "No surprise that a man with a fruity name turned out to be fruity."
We just have to keep saying it louder and louder until the masses LEARN it!
Evidently Skip Gates’ most urgent concern in life is where certain people put their penises.
Its amazing how less than 2% of the population has become such a hot topic. Have they all ponied up for some sort of publicity campaign?
Seems like an odd hobby (worrying about what other people are doing in their sex lives). I thought conservatives and religious types were the ones who were supposed to be so interested in what other people were doing in their bedrooms.
Right. Get treatment for the mental illness. Humans would go extinct very quickly if everyone did that.
Are you being facetious? Less mental illness in the world is GOOD. How would mankind not benefit from less sickness?
Mental hospitals are full of people who think they are something/someone they are not. I see homosexuality the same way, as a mental aberration-no different from pedophiles, pyromaniacs, people into beastiality,self-mutilation etc. Biologically and socially disordered.
Being wired wrong might not be a choice-but accepting the wrongness and acting on it, instead of fighting against it, IS a choice.
Mental illness is to be pitied and treated, IMO.
That’s my opinion- you’re entitled to yours.
“the 98%+ of earth’s 6 billion... “
2% of the general population, about 30% of Hollywood, journalism, and academia.
At least that’s what it seems like.

Maybe that’s it. And perhaps their other proclivities will also look less odd.
Thank you, sir! Nice to know I’m not alone.
