Seems to me that for the most part, not all, but for the most part, the younger generation is more feminine than the prior generation. They simply don’t understand masculinity enough to appreciate John Wayne.
Yes, of course, that is true. But I had one older woman who insisted that because her husband was a “real” cowboy, John Wayne was nothing but a lousy actor who deserved no respect from the American people. She said he was afraid of horses (a ridiculous assumption!) and appeared to have no idea of his body of work or his support of our Vets. A very strange, depressing day but made better by you guys, lol!
Happily, I accused all of those haters that their favorite Western must be “Brokeback Mountain.” That didn’t go down well, either!

Speaking of Rio Bravo have you noticed how often the Duke’s movies had pop singers as semi-major characters: Ricky Nelson, Fabian, Glen Campbell? Roles later frequently played by one of his sons.

Limp wristed girly men the bunch of them. Real men scare them. We’re becoming a nation of nancy boys. John Wayne craps bigger than they are.
I believe the pop stars were the studio’s idea - not Wayne’s or his directors. In the case of Ricky Nelson, it did produce a really pretty little folk song and the theme from True Grit isn’t bad either.
