Memphis May Turn to Speed Cameras for More Revenue
A Semi-News/Semi-Satire from AzConservative ^ | 27 May 2011 | John Semmens

Posted on 05/29/2011 10:57:23 AM PDT by John Semmens

Memphis City Council Chairman Myron Lowery is proposing to bridge the city’s budget deficit by boosting yields from traffic fines on speeding. The plan is to add radar guns to existing red-light automated enforcement zones and capture photos of drivers exceeding the posted speed limits.

“Look, the overwhelming majority of drivers are speeders,” Lowery observed. “That’s a pretty big potential source of revenue that we could get our hands on.”

The National Motorists Association contends that “the majority of drivers speed because the posted limits are set below what they should be. They generate millions of pointless traffic tickets and billions of dollars of undeserved insurance surcharges, disrupt traffic flow, and increase congestion.”

“The traffic tickets are hardly pointless from the City’s perspective,” Lowery countered. “The revenue from citations is crucial if we want to maintain spending levels. If the majority of drivers think the limits are too low they can vote for higher limits by electing someone else to the Council.”

Speed cameras in Tennessee would likely meet the same fate as many such devices in the UK.

Absolutely disgraceful bunch..
points out their TRUE motives for these hideous devices. They don't even pretend anymore that it's for safety.

I often thought that if they did that here, they’d make nice targets for .30.06, 8mm Mauser, 7.62mm NATO, .303 British and/or anything else at or above .223 Remington. Of course, firearms are more controlled in the UK but there are times when I see things like this, maybe there is hope in the UK where people find their gumption and fight back at the intrusion of big government. I remember that I think it was Ayn Rand who said something like the “more laws you make the more criminals you create.” I believe in law and order although on the other side, a friend of mine said, “the law is not sacrosanct” (sacred), meaning that many times, “The Man” does overstep his bounds. I know if I was on the jury for one of the UK camera destroyers, I would not vote for conviction as I believe the UK government has gone way too far.

I find it surprising that a design so prone to spontaneous combustion would ever be put in production.

It's really just a question of which is to be the master.

It’s good satire because anyone reading it would have no trouble believing it. Heck, you know they’d like to do it.

I was amused by the cameras that were repositioned so that the continued to function, but only snapped pics of trees, walls, fields, etc.

“Look, the overwhelming majority of drivers are speeders,” Lowery observed. “That’s a pretty big potential source of revenue that we could get our hands on.”

re-translated as...

“Look, the overwhelming majority of drivers are criminals we haven’t caught breaking law,” Lowery observed. “That’s a pretty big potential for increasing the size of government and the surveillance state and also bigger profits for the State that we really desire to get our hands on. We will go to any and all lengths, using any excuse, to increase the amount of power and control over these animals we can fleece and confiscate (through asset forfeiture laws) the fruits of their labor.”

Things like this will bring closer a total elimination of much of the out of control government. It is coming.

Knoxville and Murfreesboro already has them. My Cobra tells me where they are. It also warned me of a revenuer 1000 yds away on a back roads drive on Friday. It picks up 14 different types and is touch screen. It talks to you as well. :^)

More revenue? For what? To buy more speed cameras?

And then with the instant communication available through smart phones everybody avoids them or they find ways to confuse or to “move” them into taking useless pics.

And thus it escalates so any speed camera will be heavily guarded and those attempting to deter their use will be shot on site, their vehickles impounded and sold and their dog euthanized.

Bad idea I think.

“The traffic tickets are hardly pointless from the City’s perspective,” Lowery countered. “The revenue from citations is crucial if we want to maintain spending levels."

Another good source of revenue "to maintain spending levels" would be to wire all elected official to the Internet with webcam/microphones so we could monitor their activities 24/7 and fine them any time they engage in illegal activities like extortion and bribery.

That would probably be a much more lucrative source of revenue "to maintain spending levels."

Would be cool to position a pic in front of them showing things like old Tiger Beat mags, pictures of bugs bunny and porn. B-)
