Best Sci-Fi rock songs
June 12, 2011 | Vanity

Posted on 06/12/2011 1:02:56 PM PDT by gymbeau

Hi, FRiends. Was just looking for little levity and dreamed up this thread for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Please ignore if you don't want to play.

So what is your favorite science fiction-themed rock (or other musical genre) song? There are the obvious ones such as "Rocket Man" or "Space Oddity" but I'm curious as to what else is out there.

My choice is Queen's "39" from "A Night at the Opera," a bittersweet Brian May tale of the potential heartbreak among loved ones when some of them go on an interstellar voyage looking for a new planet. Probably my favorite Queen tune.

Your mileage - especially in light years - may vary.

Cheers, Jim

But he rode his bad motor scooter with his ‘rock candy’ babe behind him on the bitch seat. Hagar and Montrose were a really good combo.

It’s hard to not mention Ayreon when discussing Sci-fi music. Particularly the “Into the Electric Castle: A Space Opera” album. Then there’s the Something Wicked series from Iced Earth, about the Watchers trying to bring about the downfall of man.

Si, Rush’s Cygnus X-1 is great. Anybody remember one-hit wonder Billy Thorpe’s “Children of the Sun”?

And doesn’t Todd Rundgren & Utopia have some sci-fi material?

Lemmy is a bass king, A ******* monster.

But I like it all.

The days when they had twin drum sets pounding was awesome.

I think Alan Davey has done tremendous work on the bass and vocals

Can you believe it is the 40th anniversary of the founding of Queen, the 20th anniversary of Freddie Mercury's death, and this year would be Mercury's 65th birthday? Gee, I'm really getting old!

By the way, Freddie Mercury is currently in second place in an online reader poll for the "Greatest Singer in History" run by the well-known music mag NME (close behind Michael Jackson). If you want to vote go to:

They claim to have received more than 4 million votes worldwide.
