Splashy Sarah Palin Movie Premiere Shuts Out Hollywood; Turns Away Journalists
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | June 27, 2011 | Paul Bond

The director admits he didn't invite his "right-wing" friends such as Jon Voight and Dennis Miller, while the media scrambles for seats.

PELLA, IOWA -- Reporters from around the country that have descended upon tiny Pella, Iowa for the premiere of the Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated on Tuesday night were in for a rude awakening: So scarce are the tickets that there’s no room in the theater for journalists.

The town, in fact, has been filling up rapidly since Palin confirmed she’d attend the premiere with her husband, Todd. Police notified residents that the streets around the venue, the 111-year-old Pella Opera House, would be shut down beginning 13 hours prior to show time.

On Monday, organizers were still divvying up tickets to the massively oversubscribed event, and reporters – some who travelled more than 1,000 miles -- were given the word that they didn’t make the cut.

Organizers were scrambling Monday, though, trying to arrange a separate screening for journalists, but there were no guarantees given.

The Undefeated, from writer-director Steve Bannon, is one of two documentaries about the controversial former vice presidential candidate. The other – a less flattering look at Palin -- is an untitled film from Nick Broomfield that is seeking a distributor.

Bannon has opted for a low-key premiere – “the hard, worn bricks of the Pella Opera House is all the red carpet I need,” he said Monday – though road closures and media trucks have dictated otherwise. Bannon, a U.S. Navy veteran, also enlisted some retired Navy SEALs for security detail.

Most of the 340 tickets went to Iowans and some of the commentators featured in the film, like Tammy Bruce and Sonnie Johnson. The most controversial cast member – not including Palin herself – is Andrew Breitbart, who is expected to be a last-minute arrival on Tuesday.

“I didn’t invite all my right-wing Hollywood friends,” Bannon said. “Jon Voight, Dennis Miller, I’ll have a screening for those guys later. I’d actually like them to buy a ticket, but they’re so tight… And you can quote me on that,” he joked.”

Pella is a religiously and politically conservative town of 10,000 people that boasts three dozen churches. With those sensibilities in mind, and because the Palins will be in the audience, Bannon and company will screen the version of the film with the less offensive opening.

The Undefeated begins with celebrities – David Letterman, Matt Damon, Howard Stern, Madonna, Louis C.K. and others – thoroughly trashing Palin, though Tuesday’s audience will be treated to bleeps instead of the more hardcore profanity used by some of the entertainers. Either way, it’s an intense opening made all the more menacing by the choice of music and the inclusion of a Bible verse.

The premiere includes a barbecue for 1,000 guests – no media – where Palin intends on mingling, though it wasn’t determined yet whether she’d make any public remarks.

Hahahaha! She won't play their game! Other conservatives need to take heed. BTW, I don't think Mr. Obama would get this much publicity if a documentary about him produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Ron Howard, starring Will Smith as Dear Leader opened at the Kennedy Center or at the White House itself! ROTFLMAO!! She might as well go drapery shopping.

Republicans must make certain not to include or grant any interviews to the Soros/DNC owned press outlets.

>>Hahahaha! She won’t play their game! <<

Or she is reveling in her celebrity. Why open in large venues when she can keep sticking it to the MSM?

13 hours of police protection — hey, when you can tie up an entire small town, you have ARRIVED.

This latest stunt further convinces me that Gov. Palin is in it to mess with the MSM and get some (probably well-deserved) revenge.

But it seems a bit petty and childish.

And I don’t think she will run. But if she does, this hurts her more than helps her.

LOL all you want.

You have some personal issues you need to deal with, and professional help should be sought, IMO.

You make good sense on many issues, but Palin is your “Ron Paul on Foreign Policy” handicap.

Not at all. She's presently not running for president, she can do as she pleases, and if it bothers the media, tough. Perhaps they will learn how to behave.

And I don’t think she will run. But if she does, this hurts her more than helps her.

We'll see about that, won't we?

My post is what it says. Gov. Palin is teasing the MSM. It makes her fans cheer “huzzah” but it reveals a childlike streak in her.

Now, were I her and been hammered by the press I would probably also go low that way. But it isn’t particularly smart for a POTUS candidate.

But if she doesn’t run, I think she should have all the fun she can.

I lived in Iowa from 1974 to 2002, so I know a bit about the place. Helped several presidential campaigns and have been to Pella probably a dozen times, at least. FRiend, you have NO idea what you’re talking about. #1, I’m sure the producers are paying the city for the extra police, etc. #2, the police are not there primarily for Gov. Palin, they’re there for the hundreds of presstitutes and the SEIU types that will show up to cause trouble. How do I know that? I’ve been a bodyguard for celebrities, VIPs, politicians and businessmen and others.

Indeed. Thanks for addressing my arguments and not slamming me personally.

You are a rarity and, should Gov. Palin run, you will be a great asset to her.

You made no arguments, you simply posted observations that actually were non sequitur statements not founded upon factual circumstances, and you projected your own behavior with the “petty and childish” sentence, IMO.

In case you missed it, it's simply an opinion, take it or leave it.

So, all the sturm und drang in a tiny town makes sense? And you personally know “the producers” are paying?

*shrug*

The only framework this makes sense in is a “and the horse you rode in on” one. In the presence of a POTUS run this makes no sense at all, except from a really bizarre political “contra market” strategy.

Hey, if that is Gov. Palin’s approach, then we will certain;y have fun watching tiny town after tiny town get paid off to watch her do her thing.

The nature of the PDSer

In a time not so very long ago, a man of logic, reason and rationality, upset by the injustice of the mindless and their baseless attacks upon his candidate of choice, did undertake a quest to discover the nature of the PDS’er.

And so did the man travel to the far corners of the Earth, for in his travels he could find no wisdom, nor wise man, to satisfactorily explain the root cause of Palin Derangement Syndrome, nor it’s effect on those so smitten. It was not until a chance encounter with a Zen Master high atop a remote mountain in Tibet that our hero found his answer.

“To discover the nature of the PDS’er,” said the Zen Master, One must understand the logic of why the sky is yellow.”

Confused by the sage words of the old wise man, our hero listened intently as the knowledge of the ages sprung forth from his old and weathered lips...

“To discover the nature of the PDS’er, One must understand the fact that dogs meow and cats bark at passing cars.”

“To discover the nature of the PDS’er, One must understand the reason why the sun shines brightly in the night sky.”

For what seemed like hours the Zen Master spoke thusly until finally our hero looked upon him and said “Master, dogs do not meow, nor cats bark. The sky is not yellow but blue and the sun shines in it by day, not by night. To spout such nonsense is neither logical, nor rational, nor factual. In fact, you’d have to be nuts to believe any of that!”

And so did our hero gain enlightenment into the nature of the PDS’er.

If you read the story properly, you would have scene that the organizers, the producers and director, are in charge of the tickets. The only thing Palin has decided is to attend.

She is not in charge of the guest list and if the media want to see the production, I am sure they can pay for a showing after the opening at the multiplex.

“Bannon, a U.S. Navy veteran, also enlisted some retired Navy SEALs for security detail.”

Gotta be lovin’ this!!!
ALL of the other candidates are self-destructing. Some actually deserved a fairer shot, but it’s not to be. Santorum’s time has come and gone, and Cain seems to be fraying on the edges.
This is Sarah’s time.

A fitting fable for the “black is white”, “up is down” trend of contemporary thoughtlessness.

The irony of your suggesting I posted “non sequitur” statements is too much for anyone to take. I would LOL, but my cat reading next to me saw it first and is LOL so hard I have to pet her to keep her from coughing up hairballs.

Forensic 101: I made a contention. You made a statement having nothing to do with the contention.

Please don’t ask me to teach you more communication theory. It is generally expensive and probably way beyond your means unless you make your living not using your thinking.

If the latter is true, I can set up a payment plan. VISA/MC/AMEX are accepted, but not Discover.
