No more 4th of July fireworks shows for me
stupid vanity

Posted on 07/05/2011 1:24:49 PM PDT by no gnu taxes

Now that 4th is over, I will make my rant.

Don't get me wrong -- I have nothing against the custom. But you have to get there 2 hours early to be able to park anywhere close to an area you can view the event. The show lasts about 30-40 minutes, and then it takes you 2 hours to get out of the parking lot.

I don't have the patience for this anymore. I think last night is the last one I'll be attending.

I made that decision years ago. Fireworks and parades are much more trouble than they're worth.

You sound like my husband. Thankfully, my parents live across a lake from a couple who has a private fireworks display that is as good as all other shows in our area. The kids love it, we get to roast s’mores and watch the show then walk into the house and tuck them all in.

Wonderful.

Heck, even when I was 20, I was already too old for that crap.

Now, I wouldn’t put up with those numbers even if Hendrix merged with the reunited Beatles AND the original Stones all on one stage.

Down here in Florida, there are so many redneck backyard firework displays, you don’t need to go to the big shows. We just drive around until we find a pyro redneck. We don’t usually have to drive too far.

Around here one of those turned into a spectacular ground display as a sparkler landed in the fireworks box. I heard the story on the radio but couldn't find a link. They were interviewing someone from his hospital bed.

My local fireworks display would have been far better if the high school's ADHD club didn't plop down right in front of me a minute before the show started. I really needed a couple bottles of Ritalin to give to the kids.

I never cared for the big elaborate shows. Those are the ones that put up so many shells that you can’t see the fireworks for all of the smoke hanging in the sky. And the shows timed to music never appealed to me either. I don’t see how the music adds to the fireworks or vice versa. I want explosions, not music!

Just compare it to a rollercoater that can have the same wait and only 30-40 sec ride.

And then that is why I don’t live in a big city. I like smaller crowds.

We actually attended last night’s show because it is too dry around here and they were banned. There was a lot of traffic but we went to our storage shed area and watched from there.

Often we go to the top of a mountain and watch all of them throughout the county and avoid all the traffic.

If no one goes, they shouldn’t be crowded.

On a related note, I don’t have a mobile of bright colored animals over my crib, uh, I mean, bed, any more.

I don't eiher. Instead I have an 80 lb. black Lab/Pit cross and a 40 lb. Great Dane 4.5 mo. old "puppy." Pray for me.

We live in a small town in Western Washington and we have the best show every year. Everyone who lives within a few blocks of the main street buys a bunch (legal and illegal ones) and we have an amazing show that lasts for about 3 hours. The whole sky in every direction is lit up and by the end of the night we can’t see across the street for all the smoke.

The police officers drive up and down the main street watching the show and catching an occasional speeder on the main street to justify their presence up and down the road all night. We have a nice raised deck and we can see them in all directions, so when our very limited fireworks are done (about 15-20 of our own), we can sit and watch for hours. I swear, there are some people (5-6 close to us) that must spend a few thousand dollars on fireworks every year ... we sure appreciate having them in our town.

The best fireworks I have ever seen was at Disney world. Sitting in the Mexican canteena with my grandchildren and a frozen margarita. The fireworks was directly across the water in front of the canteena. Also lazer show...That was a long time ago..

Could be worse.

I went to the D.C. fireworks display in 1989, about 3/4 million of us crammed into the mall. Then some gang banger saw a rival, pulled a gun and started shooting. We nearly got trampled to death. I didn’t know exactly what was going on, I just noticed this wall of people heading my way.

Last night, I was at a private gathering, a nimrod lit an artillary shell that was just sitting on the ground, it popped into the middle of my group and blew up. No injuries but my friend started yelling at the idiots and was asked to leave. I packed up and left before the fireworks, the guy they made leave was the only one worth talking to.

I may be getting too old too.

For the other, we made a mad dash just as the finale started and were one of the first out of the lot.

I see this all the time... parents racing with their kids prior to the grande finale just to be first to leave... why come at all?
