President Barack Obamas auto bailout czar Ron Bloom is under fire from the House Oversight Committee for a pro-union comment he reportedly made in 2009.
David Shepardson, a reporter for The Detroit News, wrote in 2009 that Bloom told a dinner audience, I did this all for the unions. While testifying under oath at an Oversight subcommittee hearing in June, though, Bloom denied making those comments.
Rep. Dan Burton, an Indiana Republican, asked Bloom about the comment. Bloom replied that he didnt say it. So, Burton asked him if he thought he was misquoted. Bloom said thats correct.
Burton then said that he was going to call Shepardson and ask him if Bloom said it, and reminded Bloom he was under oath. Im fully aware, Bloom responded.
In an email to The Daily Caller, Shepardson confirmed that Bloom made the comment, but said it was a joke. Our 2009 story was based on first-hand accounts of mutiple [sic] people who attended the dinner and said Bloom made the comment in jest, Shepardson said.
Burton and Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican, wrote to Bloom late last week offering him the opportunity to clarify his statements to the committee. (Private emails detail Obama admin involvement in cutting non-union worker pensions post-GM bailout)
Shepardsons news story isnt the only place Bloom was quoted making the statement. Wall Street figure and key bailout player Steven Rattner quotes Bloom as saying it in his September 2010 book.

There’s just one problem, if you look at how the bond-holders got screwed (including a lot of middle income retirees), it’s clear that they DID do it for the unions.
Suppose I go rob a bank. Suppose the next day I buy some bling for my mistress. Then suppose I get caught and say “I did it for my mistress”. It’s hard for me to argue that that statement was a “joke”, given that it describes what actually happened.
Bloom should proudly admit it instead of back peddling. I suppose he's not the first cowardly progressive liar.
We remember this clown's previous jokes.
LOL Awesome, somebody finally found a good use for my election eve pic.
He was under oath, and now says it was a joke.. his lie.. wonder if Roger Clemens will be able to use that defense...
Burton reminded him he is “under oath”.
Hey Burton, you dolt,
Yes. There should be an English word or phrase to describe a perfectly serious statement that is deceptively labeled as a joke in order to prevent a serious response.
History are fun.
“many a truth are said in jest.”
Ron Bloom said the same thing about his Mao-loving, “We know power comes from the barrel of a gun” comment.
We need to hold their feet to the fire.
