Urban Survival Skills To Keep Your Ass Alive

Even if you are fortunate enough to have a retreat out in the country getting to your safe haven maybe impossible during upheaval. Roads blocked by wrecked and fuelless vehicles will stop most bugouters in their tracks. Maybe you were born lucky and can make it out safely before the balloon bursts, then what? People in rural areas, will start shooting if threatened by mobs of refugees fleeing the city. Don’t expect to be welcomed with arms outstretched. Most country folks don’t trust outsiders; you will likely be greeted with a load of buckshot and not the cup of fresh coffee and meaningful conversation you hoped for.

You need a plan 'B' because:

Underestimation can be fatal.”

For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:

http://www.tomeaker.com/kart/preparedness1i.pdf

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

I think that we are at the very least in for a collapse much like that of Argentina’s ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index), but as a armed society with a very large entitlement minded population our collapse will be much more violent and I see many many small business wiped out by flash mob looting, and large scale violence (look at what happened just this past Memorial Day and 4th of July weekends)we are seeing these mobs grow bolder and bolder like:

Chicago’s CBS 2’s Jim Williams reports, the problem of mob attacks downtown is much bigger than the weekend beatings, according to beat cops who wanted to remain anonymous.”

And it’s not just Chicago, but Washington DC, Las Vegas, St Paul, Philadelphia and on most major big ‘Blue’ cities are increasingly reporting such flash mobs and gang muggings. Look what happened just this past weekend in Peoria, Il:

http://peoriachronicle.com/2011/06/25/peorians-living-in-fear/

Teenage Flash Mob Robberies on the Rise:

http://nation.foxnews.com/flash-mob-robberies/2011/07/06/oh-white-girl-bleeds-lot-race-mob-attack-rocks-milwaukee

I see what I call ‘Pocket Pogroms’ taking place in many big ‘Blue’ cities and if you aren’t a “0bamamite yutes” it’s going to get Reginald Denny bad for you very quickly.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
NIV Proverbs 22:3

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.

Underestimation can be fatal.”

After the cities are in ruins, criminal gangs will start to migrate to the country where they will continue their business of stealing and terrorizing in more fruitful territory.

Riiiiiight. Somehow I think "their business" will be quickly and violently curtailed......at least around my area.

Reminds me of the original BEDAZZLED, when Stanley rejoins the devil atop a telephone pole, where he’s messing with the connections. Stanley asks for advice, as always, and the devil relates a story from the Chinese philosopher Lao Tse ( sic ) using his electrical clips as props: “Suppose you were hanging from a cliff by a rope, and at the top of the cliff was a hungry tiger ( snap snap ) and at the bottom of the cliff was another hungry tiger ( snap snap snap snap ... ) what would you do?”

Stanley says, “That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard,” and the devil replies, “Oh, you’ve got nothing to learn from Lao Tse and his hungry tigers!”

If you are an urban dweller, your Plan B ought to be the same as Plan A—sit tight. Because the people in Mayberry are all armed and have been shooting varmints since they were thirteen. Your Saturday night special is no match for well-zeroed hunting rifles with telescopic sights and the usual shotguns wielded by people who have actually used them.

I’m a bit lower than that (1500) and about 90 mins. NW, but the terrain is definately in our favor. Pinchpoints, sightlines etc. have all been identified and discussed. Gas wells and lines abound, so energy will not be a problem. Just have to change orifices from propane to NG. Most folks have water wells and there are several NG and many gasoline generators also. All the talk started in Dec.08 and it has just been evolving since then.

Most people are in one or another layer of denial. Denial cause inaction. History is full of examples of lack of preparation for something bad happening. Look at the photos of refugees fleeing German invasion, Think about all the people who refused to leave New Orleans before Katrina hit.

These people will suffer the consequences of their inaction. Preppers are a tiny minority of the population.

The best filters filter out Bacteria, Organic Chemicals and Protozoa (Giardia) Viruses.

Giardia is a type of Protozoa. There are other protozoans, some of which are worse. They are not viruses.

No filters I am aware of will "filter out" all viruses, which are much too small to be affected by filters, though some may be able to deal with some types.

Many filters have chemical components that will inactivate or "kill" many if not always all viruses.

You aren’t paying attention to the subject under discussion in the article. It is survival.

In survival mode, a high-fat diet is a very good thing. More calories per pound and per unit volume.

Anywho, in a true urban survival crisis of the type he mentions, the survivors will be thinning down remarkably quickly.

I thought the author’s notion of rebounding animal populations in the city was hilarious. While no doubt true on a long time span (as in multiple years), it will be of absolutely no value in surviving the critical first few months.

Let us assume a large city cut off from outside assistance. (In a scenario with outside assistance, its quality and quantity becomes the relevant factor. All others disappear in the rounding errors.)

Stocks of food in restaurants, warehouses, stores, etc. will last only a few days. A very few people such as the author may have personal stocks that will last them a few weeks or months. All animals that don’t do a very good job of hiding will be eaten within the first two weeks (making their population boom something that occurs only after essentially all humans in the city have died and animals colonize the city from surrounding areas.)

Cannibalism will start probably in two to three weeks and continue until only the toughest, smartest and meanest are still alive. Even they will soon die unless outside aid becomes available. Especially as massive epidemics will be raging throughout this period.

This whole subject is covered in remarkable and highly unpleasant detail in SM Stirling’s “Dies the Fire” series.

My husband said that we couldn’t defend ourselves against a hoard but I said we could use the backhoe to dig a wide ditch and put sharpened bamboo on the bottom.

Our plus is that we live in the desert and they would already have to be prepared to get here. They’d have to have gas, water and food because there is very little natural vegetation to eat and no water to be had.

I can’t imagine trying to tough out even a moderate collapse in the city. A few reasons:

1. Water

2. Water

3. Water

4. Sewage

5. Electricity

6. Masses of feral humanity without the above.

And when one is out in the country, outhouses or some version thereof are always an option. Used some version of them often. Probably several years, altogether.

People have no clue how disgusting life becomes if (when) the sewage system and water systems don’t work.

I wouldn’t live in a city (or near one) for any amount of money. I like living where there are more wild animals than people.

I wonder how many folks realize what a bathtube will hold (and there’s a toilet near the bathtub in 99% of the homes) when a 100 gallon bladder is filled to the best? I wnder how many folks realize how long thirty or fifty gallons of water heat water will alst in survival mode. or even how to access it properly? I once read that there is approxiamtely 2 1/2 gallons of water in the water pipes of a typical American 1800 square foot house with 2 and 1/2 baths. 9Flushing a toilet by pouring water into the bowl rather than the tank saves about 1 1/2 gallons per flush.]

I pray Lord that none of us will need it, but being prepared is not a bad thing.

I've been through hell and would like to share some wisdom tested in real life situations. Please reflect on it and think how it applies to you.

1. When I told a close friend of mind that we should stock up on military-type rations and offered him to take a half at symbolic cost, he told me without blinking "you stock up, I'll know where I will find food". I was shocked.

The morale: make sure to get rid of fair-weather friends before you start preparations.

2. Most humans are not mentally prepared to kill another human. If you have firearms, condition yourself to shoot to kill with the first shot. Plan ahead, and practice with pop up targets.

3. Make a blueprint of your home as if you are house invader. Plan to install booby traps. Leave one weapon in EVERY room, you'll have no time to go to another room for your rifle. Keep spare pants close to weapon - never fire weapon without your pants on.

4. Sleep is a weapon. The more you sleep, the more alert you will be when awake. The more you sleep, the less calories you will need. But you need trusted buddy to be on watch while you sleep.

5. Stock up not only on foods, but luxuries as well. Cigars, luxury chocolates, luxury perfume. Use it to treat family members to keep their and spirit high. The name of the game is not to survive, but to survive as YOURSELF. If you become an animal in the process, it is not worthwhile.

6. Shave every morining. Even if eating Spam, dress up like for the nigh on the town. It will keep your spirit high and your mind alert.

7. Depression could kill you. Arm yourself with antidepressants if you are at risk.

8. Fill an Ipod with the music that uplift your spirit. It will keep you amused while you lube your weapons.

9. I've heard from people who have lost all their possession that they miss their family photos the most. Don't be like them - backup all your family photos and keep digital copies at various locations, online, with your friends, everywhere. If you have to leave your home, your most prized possession will be safe.

10. Buy manually operated reverse osmosis filter. And again, buy manually operated reverse osmosis filter.

11. If streets become dangerous, make habit of emptying bowels and bladder before getting out. In case you are injured it will help.

12. Prepare nondescript street smarts uniform for all your family members. Hoodie, baggy pants, doc martins. Predators will look for affluent people. Escape their attention. I hope that Freepers with actual survival training and/or no-nonsense experience will continue the list. Godspeed to us all !
