Urban Survival Skills To Keep Your Ass Alive

Even if you are fortunate enough to have a retreat out in the country getting to your safe haven maybe impossible during upheaval. Roads blocked by wrecked and fuelless vehicles will stop most bugouters in their tracks. Maybe you were born lucky and can make it out safely before the balloon bursts, then what? People in rural areas, will start shooting if threatened by mobs of refugees fleeing the city. Don’t expect to be welcomed with arms outstretched. Most country folks don’t trust outsiders; you will likely be greeted with a load of buckshot and not the cup of fresh coffee and meaningful conversation you hoped for.

I have some plans on an urban punkin chucker, except the punkins will have something else, like willie pete.

having access to large air tanks, welding equipment and of course being a fabricator I can easily make a punkin chucker on a turret, set up on high ground, set up a kill zone with test runs ar certain pressures for distances.

And that is just one project, next is the redneck version of a bouncing betty.

The photo I used earlier was just grabbed off google as an example of the sailboat escape pod option. This is my boat, built by me. Right now, today, you can buy a used 35 footer that can cross oceans for 25-100K, depending on its condition etc. You don't need a bigger boat like mine.

As far as pirates swarming coastal areas, one, they suck gasoline and that won't be available, and two, coastal areas are easy to avoid. The open ocean is where you go to sit out crunch time and await events. I have spent 60 days at sea (Guam-California) and could go 200 days if I needed to, say, during a pandemic.

These are my escape pod.

Still, I know my place.

The punks and try, but Affirmative Action WILL NOT protect them.

Amen. We live in a gated community surrounded by rednecks. We plan on manning the only road in and holding out "Wild Bunch" style.

And yes the wife and I have an M1917 and ANM2 ready to go ;)

Many of us here know your life quite well, it may be hard for some newcomers to understand your passion for the sea and your knowledge of survival skills.

Maybe they should read some books? (wink wink)

I however have found a natural barrier against zombies, illegal aliens, man hungry cell phone deprived blond bimbos or any type of urbam refugee good and bad and thats living in Alaska, its pretty darn difficult to get to in short order.

Even just driving here can be an ordeal and the road can be closed and guarded immediately and held with just a couple of people. Of course we will probably have Anchorage zombies but as soon as they try to raise a ruckus the rednecks and Valley trash will have a field day.

Ideally a person who needs to stay on land should find a geographical area thats either unattractive to urban zombies and such or easily defendable or remote.

But overall the smart move is to simply run away and don’t look back, flee the cities.

If we have major catastrophic disasters such as mega earthquakes, tsunamis, polar shifts etc. I am thinking that running to the hills is still the most traditional and safest bet.

Urban zombies cannot survive in the mountains.

If you can live in Alaska, I think you’re already 99% of the way toward being a survivor. Assuming you don’t depend on regular home heating oil deliveries etc to remain above 32* body core temp. For sure, the zombies will be going the other way!

“But overall the smart move is to simply run away and don’t look back, flee the cities.”

Here’s the problem I see with most plans that involve fleeing - I think the “bug out” plans of most will be foiled by those fleeing just before them. Blocking a road, even a highway, is just a chainsaw away.

If you aren’t where you want to be when things happen, you should plan on staying where you happen to be.

Survivalist escape philosophy seems to be predicated on unprepared urban dwellers hitting the road pillaging. This may well be a problem, but I think the biggest problem for most “bug out” plans is other survivalists with a chainsaw or rural locals who simply don’t want to risk folks showing up on their doorstep and taking steps to minimize the numbers.

I find the “mad max” scenario to be unbelievable anyway - but having been in the middle of the LA riots way back when, anything can happen.

I could visualize that liberal democrats in an orgasmic frenzy think that in the times of tumult and societal breakdown that most Americans will be gun less or short of ammo.

I really doubt Americans will be like third world people with AK’s firing into the sky. And should there be a shortage of guns or ammo almost any tech savvy person can build a crossbow, or even one that can fire automatically.

I could make a device again just using seamless pipe and simple round aluminum pistons lubed so that with the sudden release of air pressure from a large tank it will fire off several dozen arrows or banded flechettes.

Its easy to make killing devices, its also very hard to defend a poorly chosen haven, keeping in mind one such visual representation is “The Omega Man”.

Mountains for me, in Alaska, where its too far and too cold for the zombies to be interested and where no one can see the places where the backhow will bury any that do approach.

May have sounded worse than it is. Being born and raised in NYC, my life’s skills are different than those needed here. I guess the main thing is the LACK of population. Back in NY I didn’t care if I didn’t get along with some people in my building, on my block or in my neighborhood. There was a large pool to pick friends from. Here, not getting along with that same number of people equals a much larger percentage of my neighbors. After nine years, I’m STILL working on overcoming my “big city isolationism”. I’ve got my “back door” neighbors and life is good.

That is what will define a real survivalist, having the intuition, the guts, the audacity or just blind logical faith to know when its time to leave.
Many are already living in such an ideal place, I can say I might be one of them since I am in Wasilla, Alaska.

I have relatives in California, for them all I can say is good luck, I know they will immediately be crying for refuge.

Yes if anything the greatest dangers will be those on the road, desperate people that consist of family and children. They can be the most determined to survive or can be the easiest prey for those looking for spoils.

So one can debate all day long about strategies, tools, equipment, fuel caches and such but ultimately it boils down to who is in charge of the country, who is RIGHT for the job, who has the proper vision of order, who has the proven background of being quite literally...undefeated.

Thats it for me, time to head to work, got me a nasty welding job inside a concrete batching machine this morning.

Yeah, it was. I drove through my old neighborhoods about three years ago. Newtown where I grew up (94 & 53) is unrecognizeable and Woodside (69 & Woodside) is a zoo.
With all that went on in housing, I imagine things are going well for you, no?

Better have some SERIOUS ‘repel boarders’ hardware aboard-!! I suspect the biggest threats might be airborne.

The news will not go down right away and you will be able to see the deteriotion for a time. One of the best indicators that it’s time to bug out is when you start hearing that firefighters are being shot at. They WILL NOT respond to any calls for service after this, and the ferals will continue to burn down anything that offends them, after stripping it clean of course. Also when police stations are being burned, it’s definitely over. Those police officers that survive will be ordered to a fall back rally point, most likely in the county.

If you stay put in a city residence with the plan to shoot anyone that comes around, plan to burn in it. If the ferals can’t get in it, they will burn it. Remember, historically, fighting in built up areas causes the most casualties than any other enviroment. Line of sight distances are greatly reduced and there is more cover and concealment that an encroaching enemy can use to move up on your city house. They WILL go house to house once they have eliminated law enforcement as a threat. Law enforcement may be tasked in protecting important assets like hospitals, power or water companies or even National Guard armories or Reserve Component units. If the ferals get ahold of several of those, that will make things much more difficult. Expect no mercy or sympathy, social justice will become social revenge for ALL the past injustices, real or percieved.

If you can possibly do it, have a place or a friend outside of the city limits. It can’t hurt to leave early, and be able to go with a majority of gear in less than two hours. If you wait too long, law enforcement and perhaps military, will set up roadblocks from major arteries from the city to the counties and may turn you back. Or attempt to. Others might set up road blocks as well and they will want your gear. It’s best to be gone and set up in your secondary position prior to those being organized.

I have told few close friends that I prep and urge them to do the same. I have also told them that I would turn them away at gunpoint if they show up at my residence begging.

Everyone must prepare, and have some skill set to be useful. The unprepared and useless will starve.
