Bachmann releases letter from House Attending Physician regarding migraines
The Daily Caller ^ | 7/20/11 | Jonathan Strong

Posted on 07/20/2011 2:49:37 PM PDT by Nachum

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann released a letter Wednesday from the House Attending Physician’s office, confirming that Bachmann suffers “infrequently” from migraines “with aura,” and that she can control them “well” with the use of sumatriptan and odansetron, two “commonly used therapies” to treat the chronic headaches.

The letter’s release comes after The Daily Caller reported late Monday that Bachmann has been hospitalized on at least three occasions due to the headaches. Three people who have worked closely with Bachmann told TheDC migraines regularly debilitate her for periods up to several days.

“You have a well-established diagnosis of migraine headaches with aura for which you have had extensive evaluation by both my office and by a board certified consulting neurologist. Your evaluation has entailed detailed labwork and brain scans all of which are normal,” the July 20 letter from Dr. Brian Monahan says.

“You are overall in good general health,” Monahan adds.

I get aura without migraines. It begins with a “hole” in my vision that lasts for 5 minutes, then the “hole” fradually moves across my line of vision until it transforms into zig zag lights that travels to the side of my vision. They last all of 20 minutes and except for the first 5 minutes when my central vision is impaired, I can still function. I’ve gotten them when I was driving, and was able to keep driving without any problem. There is no pain associated with them, yet the eye doctor diagnosed it as optical migraines. I have suffered with the painful types years ago, but they were never accompanied with the aura. The auras began when I was about 30 and I’m now 63.

Not to be picky here, but using a medication designed to treat a chronic condition for a condition that is termed infrequent.

Seems like a contradiction...

I had the aura followed by an excruciating pain during my high school and college years (mid 1970s to early 80s). Wouldn't wish that on anyone. The medication used to treat them in those days weren't too effective.

So she controls her migraines with Imitrex. It comes in an autoinjector. It is a vasoconstrictor. And then she has anti-nausea medicine. Nausea is a common side effect of a migraine.

And the reason she had to be hospitalized would have been to administer the same kind of drugs prior to getting them under control using the Imitrex.

Big whoop.

Next subject, please.

I posted this on another thread. I’ll share it here too.

For me, this puts the issue to rest. She knows her migraine triggers. She takes meds to abort the migraines. She does not take preventative meds, which tells me, as a migraine sufferer, ... her migraines DO NOT seriously affect her ability to function.

“... using a medication designed to treat a chronic condition for a condition tht is termed infrequent”

It really isn’t any different than someone using daily medication to control gout, high blood pressure, etc... The medicine tends to build up in one’s system and keeps it at bay or limited. A lot of medications have to build up in one’s system rather than taking it at the onset. Just a thought.

I have been getting consistently sharp pains considerably south of there since I first started voting in 1972. The triggers occur every time these smear jobs that have nothing to do with performance in office are raised.

No good treatment, but sending conservative candidates money and seeing them elected seems to have a palliative effect.

Nope. The first one she’ll take at the onset of the migrane to constrict the swollen blood vessels. The other she’ll take at the onset of nausea, if any, to control it.

Theses two meds are no big deal and are not cause for any concern at all. They’re the migraine equivalent of taking an aspirin for a headache and pepto for indigestion.

I have a prescription for a chronic condition which infrequently flares. People also take aspirin or a prescription substitute for chronic conditions such as arthritis, allergies and numerous other unpredictable chronic conditions. I know more than one person who has recurring migraines and standing prescriptions for dealing with them. Michelle B will not be brought down by this puny attempt at scandal.

Chronic means of long duration. It doesn't mean "frequent."

Chronic Of long duration and slow progression. Illnesses that are chronic develop slowly over time, and do not end. Symptoms may be continual or intermittent, but the patient usually has the condition for life.

You’re right. The Republican establishment is scared that we will have a conservative president. Rove, Krauthammer, Romney, William Kristol, and that big government wing of the party fear conservatives more than they fear Democrats.

I think Perry is their fall back guy. If Romney isn’t leading after South Carolina, they will have him suspend his campaign to help Perry knock out either Michelle or Sarah (which ever is leading then) and they will try to convince people that Perry is a conservative.

The MSM will help in this sales job because to them anyone to the right of Castro is a far right conservative.

It’s just amazing to me how people who’ve had no experience with a chronic illness can become experts in a matter of nanoseconds.

I’m 67 years old. In 1978 I got sick with viral colitis. It’s genetic. My dad probably died from it in 1943. They thought it was appendicitis. In any case, many progeny on my dad’s side have it to one degree or another.

Since 1979 I’ve been taking half the normally prescribed daily dose of a sulfa—or sulfa synthetic—drug. I’ve not been ill from colitis since then. Does that make me a drug addict or somehow unfit for public office?

Millions of people have chronic illnesses, but they are manageable and do not materially affect their ability to function—and even excel—on a daily basis.

I have nothing but disgust for people who buy into these “no source” whispering campaigns. Bachmann has been functioning under significant stress for months. For God’s sake the demrats are even going after her foster children. There is no evidence she has had to disappear for days or even hours at a time dealing with migraines.

You would be better served being concerned about The Usurping Marxist Onada’s admitted drug use and what is in his medical records.

For the record, Bachmann is not my first choice for conservative presidential candidate. The Marxists and RINOs relentless and baseless attacks on Palin and her family achieved no significant hits. They’ve shot their bolt. Now they’re going after Bachmann.

Isn’t it the least bit interesting to some of you that Romney, and others in the conservative/GOP presidential candidate field, are not being treated to the same despicable attacks as Bachmann and Palin? Does it occur to you that these two women are who the Marxists fear most right now? And when it becomes clear that West and Cain are gaining significant traction, they will be the next targets. It’s called the politics of personal destruction.
