Heat Wave: Record-Breaking Temperatures, Or Not ...
Brian Koenig ^ | 7/24/11 | Brian Koenig

With blistering and sunburn-friendly temperatures sweeping the country last week, the media has gone heat crazy over so-called "record-breaking temperatures" - which according to Bill Maher, and of course Al Gore, is "proof" of global warming. Indeed, out come the headlines: "90 year-old man dies of heat exhaustion after mowing his lawn, changing his oil, and jogging in the 100 degree heat."

But according to the National Climactic Data Center, the media's claims are false.

The news media is saturated with headlines about the "record-breaking" US heat wave over the past week. However, the NOAA database of all-time Max Temperature for the entire US from over 6000 weather stations shows that there were no records broken on July 17, July 18, July 19, or July 20th. A total of 4 stations broke records on July 21, 20 on July 22, and 10 on July 23, 2011, for a grand total of less than 0.4% of stations breaking a temperature record sometime during the past week. More than 99.6% of stations failed to break records sometime over the past week.

Come on sill Americans, it's late July. It's hot, but it's not armageddon.

Quick, urge Congress to pass legislation limiting summer temperatures to no more than 75 degrees. Those states that do not comply will be taxed until compliance is met. Or urge the president to sign in an executive order to do the same. Sign it into law in September. I’ll bet temperatures will start to fall by October as a result./s

Temperatures in Chicago have been ghastly but not unheard of.

It has been hotter while I have lived here. Last summer was cool, too.

Only God knows what the temperature should be.

It’s actually been unseasonably cool in Tucson, we haven’t spiked up over 100 in weeks, been hitting the low 90s mostly. Kind of nice actually.

This a all stupid liberal hysterics. I was baling hay in TN (1975) and the ambient was 102. I have no idea the temps in the barn and it was long sleeve flannel for all involved. Phhhtttt!

You have my sympathy. I assume that you did not go to Detroit willingly ...

Project meetings in Troy, and my step-daughter lives right in Detroit... next to the plant where they make the Chevy Volt... funky neighberhood indeed. We toured much of the devastation they call Detroit... I got around 400 pictures for my collection.

The MSM is completely pussified about the weather. I see all sorts of weather alerts & warnings almost every day I turn on OTA broadcast television.

Pretty much the same here in the Great Basin deserts of Eastern California and Western Nevada, and with the humidity around 4% even 100 feels comfortable.

Reality only plays a minor role in the wacky world of Progresso Land. Everyone in the Northern Hemisphere expects heat in July. When we start seeing less snow in the winter time, because it is too warm to snow, then that might be proof of global warming.

this is especially significant, when you consider how many stations have been re-sited over the years, to be on asphalt, near heat exhausts, etc.

NASA itself, admits the Urban Heat Island effect, can be as much as 8 degrees higher compared to a nearby rural site.
(not 0.8. but eight!)
