Michele Bachmann wins first women’s presidential straw poll (Herman Cain comes in second)

Rep. Michele Bachmann won the first Women’s Presidential Straw Poll, held at the Smart Girl Summit in St. Louis, Missouri this weekend.

Herman Cain, who spoke at the event, closely trailed Bachmann, finishing in a strong second place.

The ballot included Bachmann, Cain, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, former Ambassador Jon Huntsman, Gov. Gary Johnson, Congressman Thad McCotter, Congressman Ron Paul, Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Gov. Mitt Romney.

“The overwhelming choice of Rep. Bachmann and Herman Cain in the First Women’s Presidential Straw Poll shows that conservative women demand a true conservative – one that believes in fiscal responsibility, in limited government, and that will stand up for the grassroots,” said Stacy Mott, founder of Smart Girl Politics.

Texas Governor Rick Perry and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin were not included on the ballot.

“Attendees had a difficult time casting their vote. Many were undecided, proving that candidates must communicate better with conservative women in order to win their support. Smart Girl Politics congratulates Rep. Bachmann and looks forward to the continued support and communication of all candidates with grassroots conservative women,” added Mott.

Only women were permitted to participate in the straw poll. In addition to selecting candidates, attendees were also queried about which issues were most important to them. Reducing spending and balancing the budget was, by far, the dominant issue selected.

Andrew Breitbart also made news at the event — publicly denouncing The American Conservative Union’s (ACU) decision not to invite the gay conservative group GOProud to co-sponsor CPAC next year.

Bachmann is the only one with skin in the game and the only one who comes out on top on this whole debt ceiling thing. By holding firm and voting NO on everything she can claim the high ground, criticize everything that happens and in my estimation will get a huge bump in the polls after this debacle passes.

I wish Cain would pick up more momentum. I really would like to see him as POTUS.

“I wish Cain would pick up more momentum. I really would like to see him as POTUS.”

You know, I liked him at first, but the more I hear him the more it’s clear to me anyway that he’s just a walking 5-point plan. He’s got very little depth and gets tripped up easily on on a lot of policy questions. He’s very thin. Not that I wouldn’t prefer him over ANY of the hack RINOs in the race.

But as an overall candidate Bachmann is far superior.

I’m not trying to be overly critical, I just urge you an everyone to play close attention to what all these guys say and judge accordingly. 2012 may be our last hope.

RE: Herman Cain is a woman?

It is a straw poll of women, not presidential candidates made up of only women ( but to quote Magneto: “Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers?” )

For one thing, I don’t think Cain has a chance, unfortunately, but if he did, he’d need to run with John Bolton or someone with foreign policy experience.

Exactly, why should the be included if they haven’t announced yet?

I wish Cain would pick up more momentum. I really would like to see him as POTUS.

He's nowhere near ready for prime time. Cain should have won a few local/state races first before trying to run for President. His one attempt at running for office was in a primary for a Senate seat and he lost badly.

I still think he is good for our primaries. He's a great guy and brings quite a lot to the table - just not enough anywhere near enough to win the nomination.

Me too. I like both Bachmann and Cain.

Hubby suggested that Cain’s low momentum may be because of the similarity of the name to McCain, which would turn off the idiots who can’t read or don’t pay attention.

God help this country if most Americans think like this.

Absent Palin this is a sham vote. Imagine the excitement of Sarah being in a debate. You'll recognize her...she'll be the one not wearing a respirator.

RE: Absent Palin this is a sham vote.

The age old question still remains — Is she in ? If so, when?

You can’t be counted unless you are a candidate.

I’d put the odds that she’s in at 95/5. If I’m wrong, bring on the crow and serve it up. If I’m right...WOO-HOO!!!
