The U.S. must have a State Run Media: For the Greater Good!
Coach is Right ^ | 9/5/2011 | Doug Book

Lee Bollinger is an attorney turned academic. Past president of the University of Michigan, Bollinger now holds that position at Columbia University, home of the famed Columbia School of Journalism.

Bollinger believes that coming J school graduates will provide a more valuable service if the American media becomes the de facto property of the federal government.

“…I propose…an American World Service…”, writes Bollinger. “A media institution with sufficient funding to bring the highest quality American journalism to the global forum.” And that “sufficient funding” will be provided by the federal government. From taxpayers.

Why is government funding necessary? Because “…the proliferation of communications outlets has fractured the base of advertising and readers.” And as a result, “newsrooms have shrunk and foreign bureaus have been decimated,” says Bollinger.

It seems that while free enterprise and the internet have expanded the field of news providers, they have also upset the once virtually monopolistic status of the “giants”, robbing them of advertising dollars and audiences.

In short, choice and diversity, those prized catchwords of the Left become dangers when beneficiaries like FOX lead in market share.

Just another sign of the intellectual disintegration of libtards

I’m pretty sure that George Orwell intended his writings to be cautionary tales. But these delusionaries think he was producing “how-to” books.

We should think about American journalism as a mixed system, where the mission is to get the balance right.

To me a key priority is to strengthen our public broadcasting role in the global arena. In today's rapidly globalizing and interconnected world, other countries are developing a strong media presence. In addition to the BBC, there is China's CCTV and Xinhua news, as well as Qatar's Al Jazeera. The U.S. government's international broadcasters, like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe, were developed during the Cold War as tools of our anticommunist foreign policy. In a sign of how anachronistic our system is in a digital age, these broadcasters are legally forbidden from airing within the U.S.

This system needs to be revised and its resources consolidated and augmented with those of NPR and PBS to create an American World Service that can compete with the BBC and other global broadcasters. The goal would be an American broadcasting system with full journalistic independence that can provide the news we need. Let's demonstrate great journalism's essential role in a free and dynamic society.

I was so born too soon.

One supposes further that he proposes that this American World Service go by a shorter, more 'catchier' name, something, like, perhaps, "TRUTH"?

He's heard of them. He's just unhappy that they can't be used for internal propaganda.

Wall Street Journal opinion piece, July 14, 2011

I have a feeling that this guy would be crapping bricks if President Bush had put VP Cheney in charge of his new American World Service.

Vivian Schiller wanted to do this type of thing and bring in all American Journalism into the PBS family.

Shows just how rough J-school graduates have it. Not a degree you want to have on your resume.

I used to love listening to Radio Tirana and the old Radio Moscow broadcasts, too. My dad and I would huddle around his Hallicrafters SW radio and just burst out laughing at the absurdity of the Communist distortions of world events, as well as the predictable “record” grain harvests and triumphant manufacturing reports. Today of course, we have MSNBC.

we have that now, CNN, MSNBC, FNC, CBS all state run.

All newspapers sift through the NYC priority grinder.

If anything we need LESS media centralizing.

seriously?

this “please save my job” idiot is coppying the leftist BBC. (they were thrown off a battleship, unfortunatly not literally, due to their anti military bias)

His students have no jobs, no chance at jobs.

if his school is useless for employement then there is no reason for the school to exist.

This might have a lot to do with the media’s murderous hysteria over the Tea Party taking power in the House.

They were making noises about Obammy bailing them all out when he first came into office. John McMedia wouldn’t mind.
