In a speech at Sichuan University, US Vice-President Joe Biden told the Chinese government that its one child per family policy will come back to bite you.
While the world must be grateful for your heroic efforts to control excess population via rigorous enforcement of widely available pregnancy termination services, there is also a downside, Biden cautioned. The decline in the younger-aged cohorts of the population will generate a severe actuarial imbalance in your social security program. This will impair your ability to fund benefits for the aging cohort. Simply put, there wont be enough younger people working to support those who have retired.
Biden conceded that declining birth rates in the West pose a similar problem for the United States and Europe, but warned that the escape valves available to us dont appear to be realistic options for a country with such a large population like China. Europeans have filled the gap by importing Muslim laborers. In America, we are blessed with a robustly growing crop of younger workers in our neighbor to the south. Where will China find the people needed to fill its youth population gap? Chinas wages are too low to attract many immigrant workers.
The vice-president speculated that non-economic means might be Chinas only recourse, and that an investment in a stronger military would be understandable given the unattractive alternatives. In fact, a more unified Asian co-prosperity sphere coordinated under the leadership of the dominant power in the region might be the best all around solution, Biden concluded.
....come back to bite you.
I read the rss feed on this thread an said to myself...... This better be JS !.....:o)
Very Good Sir...
Because when the Chinese instituted this policy, they probably did it with no thought of the future. After all, the Chinese are not the type to plan ahead.
So they are very lucky to have an complete outsider come in and lecture them.
/ sarcasm now off
Chinese Proverbs will be written about his genius for a thousand years or until social security runs out in the PRC, whichever comes first.
As if the Chicoms have not already considered this dilemma. Bite Me has never had any advice to offer this world.
To point out an obvious that some might miss, is that China is has transitioned from a peasant agricultural economy to an information based industrial economy faster than any othe country in the world. The substitution of capital machinery for human labor always has made enormous differences in productivity. The rest of the world made the transition over a few generations, thought, not a half a generation.
Do something useful. Criticize Chinese protectionism and threaten American tariffs.
What a waste of a trip.
