Skip to comments.Blame the organizers for the snafu at the Iowa tea-party rally, not Palin

Tina touched on this point before, but heres Dave Weigel noting something that drives it home:
I met [organizer Ken] Crow in Iowa this month (Ive been unsuccessful reaching him today) and he struck me as a classic Tea Party archetype an amateur with big Field of Dreams ambitions. He made me well aware of all the projects he was working on but seemed a little laconic for a guy putting on a mega-rally. Its gonna be televised on C-Span, he said, and maybe Fox, too.
Reading up on Crow today, we find that hes a talky activist prone to showing how much he knows. For example, on Palin: I know for a fact she aint gonna run. Thats the guy bringing Palin to Iowa for an event that reporters are attending because they wonder whether Palin will run!
Lets sum up. The organizer, who should be building hype about an impending announcement in order to promote his event, is inexplicably going around telling people that it aint happening. Meanwhile, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Christine ODonnell has become for many a symbol of tea-party overreach (as one of our Headlines commenters put it this morning), the organizers went ahead and apparently booked her (twice!) to appear onstage before Palin, which would have handed the media a tea partiers are unelectable! angle on a silver platter. In fact, four different news outlets RCP, NBC, CNN, and Politico are claiming that ODonnells appearance was one of the issues in this mornings drama, with CNN adding this:
The Palin source said ODonnells representatives misled the tea party group about the extent of the governors relationship with ODonnell.
ODonnells representatives told event organizers that she would be in Iowa on the date of the rally and would like to come by and say hi to Palin, the source said. ODonnell was then added to the speaking agenda.
The source told CNN that ODonnell aides lied to organizers and said Palin had been communicating via text message with ODonnell about the rally.
The governor hasnt spoken to her in a year, the Palin source said of ODonnell.
See Ace for more on the politics of inviting ODonnell and then read R.S. McCain expressing understandable exasperation that a triumphant moment on Saturday would be complicated by leaks and fingerpointing some of which came via on-the-record statements to reporters by none other than Ken Crow. No wonder Palins team was considering walking away. When youve got the organizer of the event hinting to the media that you pressured him into canceling another speaker, why do him a favor by sticking around and making his event a success?
As for why Crow thought it was a good idea to invite ODonnell in the first place, maybe he figured itd be okay since she was, after all, at one point a tea-party star who won the Delaware primary. Whether and when she lost that stature, Im not sure; maybe Crow wasnt either. Last year, before the primary with Castle, it was evidence of utmost RINO-ism to suggest OD was a poor candidate with a thin record and unlikely to win in a blue state. Now, judging by the comments today in Headlines, its nearly universally agreed that she shouldnt be onstage Saturday. Maybe thats simple electoral politics at work Palin needs centrists to win and thats not ODonnells core constituency, to put it mildly but then those same calculations applied in Delaware and ended up not mattering somehow. And of course Palin herself endorsed ODonnell in the primary, which may have led Crow to think a speaking invite would be copacetic. Whatever the answer, its a good sign for her campaign that Team Palin is savvier about the optics of this sort of thing than the Crows of the world.
Thank goodness we've a serious contender in the line-up:
Once again, Newsweek makes a charicature of a candidate....but Perry played into it. Why???
Last I checked, Crow is a Perry supporter, so obviously there’s a lot he does not know about Palin. I believe Palin’s speech will be her best one yet. Thanks, now I know I can watch on C-Span. GAME ON.
Governor Perry ‘s Islam Connection (The Truth)
I want a pair of those boots with the motto.
Four years ago you were a Sarah guy thru and thru, but you did it by promoting her assets. This time you’re just the new Pissant. You just cut down all others to make Sarah look better. Our goal here should be to destroy Obama, with Palin, Perry, Cain etc. I’m a Palin guy, but Perry would do just fine to save out nation fron 4 more years of this fraud. Please go back to who you were 4 years ago. It’s getting old.
Rules. Aren’t you supposed to PING Pissant when you post something about him?
Try clicking that link before you jump all over me.
Is that cover real?
Thanks for linking a pro-perry article into here.
I worked for President Reagan and agree with his 11th commandment, except for Milt and Wrong Paul.
Good story, but it seems the pro-Palin posts always get bumped off the News/Activism board over to the other ones like Bloggers/Personal or GOP Club etc.
That's not a caricature, it's him.
And not a thing wrong with it, either.
On the contrary, Perry's long pro-illegals, pro-amnesty record is appalling!
It was Bush43's pushing amnesty which split the Republican party and gave Democrats Congress and Obama the White House. Why in the world would you want to repeat that tragedy, and so soon?
This is what happens when the Tea party strays from it’s original intent. It wasn’t meant to be a political stage to hype up potential candidates and politicians. Of course these people are amateurs and unprofessional. They are supposed to be.
Blame them for what?
In any other situation putting O’Donnell ahead of Palin would like have been no big deal. But being this might be Palin’s announcement speech Ken should have been thinking, and maybe tapping into some experienced people for advice. There are alot of people that would have been wrong to put right ahead of Palin. Even worse, he did it at the last minute.
Then there’s the shooting his mouth off thing. Cowboy needs to nip that in the bud.
Not sure if you're just kidding or if you didn't know that he was banished.
I was wondering what happened to Pissant. I always liked him but I was getting concerned that his tone was more shrill. I asked him if he had a health problem. I’m surprised that I didn’t know that he was gone.
