Thank You George Bush, for Fixing FEMA
9/2/2011 | me

After all was said and done, there was a much improved response from FEMA both before and after this latest storm.

FEMA was a mess before Katrina- Bush fixed it after it that disaster.

Not one word of thanks from anyone about that?

Obambi has left FEMA essentialy 100% unchanged since he took over- so ALL the praise should go to Bush

You don’t fix redistribution. You bury FEMA in the same mass grave as the EPA, OSHA, HUD and others.

“FEMA was a mess before Katrina- Bush fixed it after it that disaster.”

Roughly 5 YEARS after he took office? Sheesh talk about lowering the goal posts. And how do you square his “you’re doing a heck of a job Brownie’ comments?

He really is like the ‘new boyfriend’ who moves in with the divorcee; to the house the husband has paid for, eats the food the husband pays for, lounges in the pool the ex-husband paid for and grumbles when the grass needs mowing.

And he hates the kids!!!

Everyone keeps talking about how bad FEMA was and Katrina was messed up by George Bush. How come here in Florida we weathered 3 hurricanes hitting one after the other and didn’t have major problems? Katrina was botched by the local authorities and the governor of Louisiana!

The states should be able to opt out of FEMA (Quit paying for it and refuse their “help”)

Another government lie based on the premise that GodGov will provide "security" against the vagaries of a dangerous world.

"Security" isn't just a dangerous illusion, it's a delusion.

“Katrina was botched by the local authorities and the governor of Louisiana!”

When you are ‘stuck on stupid’ like Nagan and the rest of the NOLA clown club, NOTHING is going to make a difference for you ... in an emergency or at any other time.

My state (Michigan) got FEMA funding for Katrina. In fact I think it was the single largest FEMA payout to Michigan.

FEMA works well when it educates and coordinates. Put it back where it was and all will be well.

I agree. Charity is best left to those who are truly charitable and without political agendas.

I really amazed me watching ORudely last night how he decided to show a poll where 53% of Americans thought the obama depression was actually Bush's fault.

Where do they find those people outside of public school, Hollywood and meth labs? It's disgusting!

Bush at least loved this country, respected it's citizens and it's soldiers. He wasn't the quickest when it came time to blow off the panic with the bail-out but he's hardly responsible for the years of socialism bankrupting our nation.

Anyway, yes, Bush definitely deserves high marks for the FEMA build up.

That was the problem with Katrina. FEMA and the federal government exist in a disaster to provide supplies, resources and aid to state and local governments.

They don't exist to take over the roles of state and local government when the governor locks herself in her office, and the mayor shoves is face in a pile of coke and curls up in a fetal position.

The problem is people could do things for themselves if they need to, but too much reliance on Uncle Sugar caused New Orleans to have a very inappropriate response. The response to Irene was more sensible.

You should learn about how the process works before you make comments that are 100% wrong.

It is the state governors themselves who submit a request for a Federal disaster declaration and thus FEMA assistance. Only in very very rare cases does the Federal government send in FEMA without a state requesting them first. Even in those cases the Feds only send a small cadre of FEMA personnel until more are requested by the state via a disaster declaration.

It normally works like this
1) Disaster happens
2) State disaster declaration is made
3) State government sends a request to the President of the US for a Federal disaster declaration.
4) FEMA ERT Teams do an initial investigation and submit recommendations on whether the disaster rises to the level of a Federal emergency.
5) If denied, the sate may appeal. If approved, FEMA and other appropriate Federal agencies are dispatched to operate within the declared disaster area for a specific amount of time.
6) If needed and if the state concurs, the time limit of the disaster declaration may be extended.
