Trucking Firms Must Hire Alcoholics as Drivers
A Semi-News/Semi-Satire from AzConservative ^ | 2 Sep 2011 | John Semmens

Posted on 09/05/2011 10:33:13 AM PDT by John Semmens

The Memphis District Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed suit against the Old Dominion Freight Line trucking company contending that its policy against hiring alcoholics to drive their trucks violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Katharine Kores, director of the EEOC’s Memphis District Office, maintains that “alcoholism is a disability. As such, it cannot be used as a reason for barring a person from employment.”

To counter the company’s claim that putting an alcoholic behind the wheel of a 40-ton truck would be unsafe, the EEOC’s suit argues that “there are other ways the firm can promote safety. They could use breathalyzer, ignition interlock devices, for example. But in any case, the law protects a person’s right to pursue his chosen vocation without being discriminated against because of his disability.”

I don’t think this is one of your best pieces. either you or I do not have the correct definition of “alcoholic”...and I think its you. People who have not had a drop in 40 years are still alcoholics.

Every time I hear a liberal say, “Okay. What would YOU cut, smartypants?”, my head explodes. My list is so long. I think America could get along just fine without the commie libs down at the EEOC and their constant race-baiting.

The blind are disabled too. About time we end that discrimination.

I have a sickness that causes me to fall asleep suddenly. I wonder if I could get the same protection as a disability. I’d like to drive a truck on a long haul.

Ninety per cent of all alcoholics die drunk, some with more than twenty years sober time.

Good point - 23 years and counting for me. I might go along with a 5-year sobriety record before trusting someone with a big rig though, especially for cross-country when they spend a lot of time "off the RADAR" of those who know them.

its not against the law to get drunk. You can’t demand 5 years of sobriety.

This is but one source:

http://www.orange-papers.org/orange-effectiveness.html

I have attended AA meetings for 24 years and have personally seen a number of old timers go back out. One had 34 years of sober time. Of all the personal stories written in the original AA book, all but one went back out.

The treatment center I attended in 1987 recently informed me that I was one of the few in my class of 50 who stayed sober.

I'm sure I could find more sources for you if you like.

One of my neighbors, a pleasant-enough fellow, lived on disability income. His disability was that he was a drunk. He had a car and a driver's license; fortunately or unfortunately, he frequently forgot where he'd left the car. (Once, it was left in the middle of a road, where he abandoned it and walked home.) His house was paid for, his children were grown, and, when his wife left, he lived happily ever after—without working a single day.

Funny, except for the facts that (1) he could have hurt someone while driving drunk and (2) you and I paid for his chosen lifestyle with tax money confiscated from our earnings.

and I’ve known alcoholics who were also workaholics...concurrently...and they never attempted sobriety.
