What If the Tea Party Wins?

They Have a Plan for the Constitution, and It Isn’t Pretty

Download this issue brief (pdf)

Read the issue brief in your web browser (Scribd)

In the Tea Party’s America, families must mortgage their home to pay for their mother’s end-of-life care. Higher education is a luxury reserved almost exclusively to the very rich. Rotten meat ships to supermarkets nationwide without a national agency to inspect it. Fathers compete with their adolescent children for sub-minimum wage jobs. And our national leaders are utterly powerless to do a thing.

At least, that’s what would happen if the Tea Party succeeds in its effort to reimagine the Constitution as an antigovernment manifesto. While the House of Representatives pushes Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) plan to phase out Medicare, numerous members of Congress, a least one Supreme Court justice, and the governor of America’s second-largest state now proudly declare that most of the progress of the last century violates the Constitution.

It is difficult to count how many essential laws would simply cease to exist if the Tea Party won its battle to reshape our founding document, but a short list includes:

Social Security and Medicare Medicaid, children's health insurance, and other health care programs All federal education programs All federal antipoverty programs Federal disaster relief Federal food safety inspections and other food safety programs Child labor laws, the minimum wage, overtime, and other labor protections Federal civil rights laws Indeed, as this paper explains, many state lawmakers even embrace a discredited constitutional doctrine that threatens the union itself.

What’s at stake The Tea Party imagines a constitution focused entirely upon the Tenth Amendment, which provides that “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people”—which is why their narrow vision of the nation’s power is often referred to as “tentherism.” In layman’s terms, the Tenth Amendment is simply a reminder that the Constitution contains an itemized list of federal powers—such as the power to regulate interstate commerce or establish post offices or make war on foreign nations—and anything not contained in that list is beyond Congress’s authority.

The Tea Party, however, believes these powers must be read too narrowly to permit much of the progress of the last century. This issue brief examines just some of the essential programs that leading Tea Partiers would declare unconstitutional....

I laughed, also. How mant cases of death by food posioning still happen, even though we have a Fed agency designed to stop it?

Not to mention the fact that there is a movement on the left to “regulate” Farmer’s markets. It was started a couple of yrs ago by a congresswoman who is married to a board member of Mosanto, who worried that if we grow our own food, the pesticide and fertilizer industry would go belly up.

I would LOVE to have the space to grow my own food and milk my own cow. I live in the suburbs now, which is for work and not how I was raised. That is where I want to go back to when I retire. I grew up, helping raise our own food. If the “Urban” libs can’t do it, I’ll sell them my excess at the Farmer’s Market.

In a NORMAL American household, you may have to make hard choices on how to take care of an elderly parent....Duh. Isn’t this what families have always done?
Not only does this man hate his Mother, he thinks we hate ours as well.

It’s the words “ the general welfare” that the left justify passing all of their laws designed to “protect” us with that has been scaring me for quite a few decades now.

I’m so glad I stopped smoking the crap this writer is smoking way back in college. It has apparently gotten much stronger and stranger.

Wow! Just Wow! It’s difficult to know what to say - they have found us out!

I was just outside hollowing out a small depression in the dirt under the porch where I can chain my Grandmother.

I plan to throw some food scraps out the window for her now and then.

I’m also planning to bring rotten raccoon meat to the farmers market to sell - but only to poor people. I sure hope it is rabid!

It’s really difficult to understand how STUPID or INTENTIONALLY IGNORANT the left can be. How completely disingenuous in the face of actual fact they can be!

Theyu are the personification of “the ends justifies the means”! They have NO LIMITATIONS! This is what we must understand!

They are truly an evil that must be eradicated - by shining the light of truth on them rather than by the lies, thuggery and outright violence they perpetuate. There IS evil in the world and it is progressivism.

Far too many people read this crap and believe it. You don’t think people are that dumb? Just remember Obama won in 2008 because of those very same people who buy into this crap.

This is how the left fights against those with whom they disagree.

They create from whole cloth deceitful worst-case scenarios and present them as de rigeur facts. This is how they fought Rep. Paul Ryan's budget suggestions, with a commercial where a guy who looks alot like Ryan pushed Granny off a cliff in her wheelchair.

Net effect? The GOP lost the seay that was up for grabs in a special New York election, because the liars (progressives) terrified the imbeciles (NY voters) with their lies.

It mattered not one whit that Ryan's plan did not affect those already on Medicaid. Nor did it matter that there were no actual "cuts" to the program, only "cuts" to the rate of porjected "growth" of the program, with offsets to be found in the waste, fraud and abuse in the system.

We must keep in mind that this is how venally and despicably these filth are willing to behave if necessary to hold onto the reins of power. Truth be told, this is actually rather tame compared to how far they will likely go.

Any good progressive will shrug and tell you, "Desperate times call for desperate measures."

There is a way to effectively combat this, and my friend on the TEA Party tribune will be doing an article on this shortly. It will be a seminal piece as it will contain a bulletproof roadmap for destroying the Lying Liberal Progressive Cabal once and for all.

I may even post it here if he asks me to nicely.

You know my father, bless him, is so proud of himself to have insurance out the yin yang to prevent my brother or I having to put up with the “burden” of his later years.

I told him families used to have 3 generations under the same roof and all involved weren’t any worse off for it. I’m firmly convinced that we’re much poorer as a nation not having multi-generational households and strong families that come with it.

Tell me, would you rather live poor/modest like the Waltons or rich as all get out like “The Real Housewives of....”

Oh and I’m not a geezer, I am an MTV generation conservative.

The libtards are worried that Obamacare may lead the Supreme Court to change its mind about the Commerce Clause and the Tenth Amendment, potentially unraveling eight decades of social progress. Read what leading 'tard Jeffrey Toobin recently wrote about the Court's hidden intellectual leader.

It's hard to know where to begin.

Rotten meat can't be inspected by states or locals? I find that odd since we have county "Departments of Environmental Health," we have a "Retail Food Code" in CA, we have "Registered Environmental Health Specialists" doing inspections to make sure state and local laws are adhered too. Do they really think food-related inspections are all handled by the FDA? Wow. They're morons.

Mortgage a home to care for grandma? Actually that's something people are pressured to do now by the unscrupulous "progressive" "social safety net." When I was growing up, I helped take care of my grandmother in her last years just as she'd taken care of me in my earliest years. Like my mother before me, I was a parental caregiver as well. This is what responsible people do. It's what families do.

It wasn't all on me, of course. Born into poverty and orphaned by 13, my father was not well educated. However, through hard work and initiative, my father ensured he and my mother had health coverage, retirement income, insurance and so on. He tasked himself to be the prime bread winner while she managed the finances and, when children came, she left work to focus on child rearing. Through complementary tension, they handled their roles very well. It's how successful families function. When local public schools were a clear failure, they sacrificed niceties like vacations and vast wardrobes to put us through private schools.

We've always donated to charities to help those in need and do so quietly, without fanfare. I've volunteered because I was moved to do so, not because of some government edict or diploma requirement. Our neighbors helped us and we helped them. This is what I see as conservative's America.

Dependence upon the federal government is akin to slavery. Self-styled "progressives" want this nation to be a giant plantation. Real individual liberty is stolen while base behaviors are not only treated permissively but rewarded. The family unit is undermined in favor of collectivism and state dependence. Parents are undermined by direct relationships between government bureaucrats and children.

Public education and the "progressive" programs train us not to think of our selves in relation to one another in family and community, not to think of our own can-do initiative but to think of ourselves as wards of the state in need of coddling by our self-appointed betters.

As an aside, I want to reject the idea of "giving back to the community." That thinking presupposes you have a debt to pay to the collective whole and, by extension, the state. Progressives would like us all to think that way because debt is subjugating, more like serfs than freedmen.
