A No Confidence Vote in Orlando [Kristol: Cain Vote Just Means "None of The Above"]
Weekly Standard ^ | September 24, 2011 | WILLIAM KRISTOL

A No Confidence Vote in Orlando SEP 24, 2011 • BY WILLIAM KRISTOL

Having watched the debate Thursday night, and having heard the candidates speak and having mingled with them over the subsequent couple of days, 70 percent of the activists attending the Florida Republican gathering this weekend cast a vote of no confidence in the two GOP frontrunners.

So, with all the usual caveats about not over-interpreting straw polls, I’d suggest:

1. There is resistance to both Rick Perry (15 percent) and Mitt Romney (14 percent). Perry’s poor debate performance hurt him—but it doesn’t seem to have redounded to Mitt Romney’s benefit. Perhaps neither Perry nor Romney will end up as the nominee. After all, the two GOP frontrunners in national polls in late September 2007 were Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. The Democratic frontrunners in a Gallup poll on September 24, 2003 were Wesley Clark and Howard Dean.

2. Herman Cain (37 percent) will obviously get a new, more serious look. Still, with all due respect to Cain, to some degree voting for him is voting for none of the above.

Bill’s an idiot. Cain is either the only person who gets it, or the others are too afraid to say it.

FU Bill Kristol

A vote for Herman Cain is exactly that: a vote for Herman Cain.

It’s simple really: The grass-roots conservatives have figured out:

1. Romney is too liberal.
2. Perry is too liberal.
3. Bachmann, God love her, is going to say something stupid.
4. Herman Cain is conservative, the best conservative that can win, and also has the added bonus of being black, which will irritate liberals for decades!

Actually Billy Boy... I think it meant CAIN was the CHOICE of those voting in the Straw Poll... what part of a vote does he not understand. I know, this is not a MEDIA poll - unable to twist it through bull-pucky questions... just a simple vote. Amazing how they don’t want to believe the only poll that counts, the vote of the people.

5. There will be a lot of attention paid to Chris Christie’s Reagan Library speech Tuesday.

LOL, this is it folks, the establishment has just thrown Romney under the bus!

Perry was NEVER the establishment candidate, the Bushes hated him and so did Rove, a lot of people around here just did their dirty work for them. Ah well, we'll have to wait and see what happens. If Cain can get the financial support, if Perry can recover, if Romney will exit the stage with some dignity after being to publically abandoned.

We need to milk Kristol’s comment for all it’s worth.
We don’t know if we’ll have another chance. (but most likely we will)

What the hell does he mean by NONE OF THE ABOVE???
Where is Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson on this one???

A more serious look???? Is he admitting here that THEY HAVN’T EVEN BEEN LOOKING AT HIM???

WHY???? Because he is BLACK?????

Bill Kristol = Racist Pig!

Eh, William F. Buckley once described George Wallace as the ‘up yours’ candidate and Herman is probably in that role. I'll bet Ricky Perry is rethinking his enthusiasm for illegal immigration and the Mittster is regretting his enthusiasm for socialized medicine.

Kristol is just trying to bolster the case Chris Chistie. Kristol probably finds Perry too conservative (except for his weak position on securing the border, which I'm sure appeals to Kristol) and he may have reservations about Romney's ability to win vs Obama for a variety of reasons (Mormon, rich, RomneyCare). Kristol may think Christie is the best choice because he is a moderate on many social issues (aka RINO), but has appeal to middle/working class voters because of his own middle origins and tough guy image.

I would remind Mr. Kristol that Christie has to lose about 100 pounds before he thinks about running for POTUS.

” Herman Cain is conservative, the best conservative that can win “

I’ve like him ever since I heard him interviewed on Michael Savage’s show some weeks back . To be honest , for various and sundry reasons I didn’t think he had much of a chance , but it would appear that I was wrong . I hope Palin stays OUT of the race now and works to help get Herman the nomination .

Yep! It really looks like people are engaged, deeply engaged, this go around. Simply having an R by your name isn’t going to cut it, and that is just fantastic!

This is why I am not concerned about Chris Christie getting in the race or not. If he does, he won’t be fooling anyone IMO.

Not only don’t Liberals get it that this country is fed up with their policies, the Republicans don’t get it that we want a real conservative. Just watch the explanations on the Sunday morning talk shows. Not one of them will admit that the people want a conservative. They will be saying, “Move along, nothing to be seen here.” They are in for a big surprise. Let’s start the Cain mutiny against the Republican establishment!
