Fake Marine Problem. Help.
myself | 10/11/2011 | Grapeape

Posted on 10/11/2011 4:17:25 PM PDT by grapeape

I think that I may have stumbled onto a very large problem. I am working with a guy that says that he was a Marine and I am 99% sure that he isn't. He has got a really great story going and he has fooled a lot of people. I need a place to go to so that I can prove that he isn't a marine.

I can already proove several of his other stories are fabrications but this is the key. I have read online that is a rather big problem, especially for the Corps and the Seals. Can anyone tell me where to go to find out if this guy ever served?

Thanks for your help.

Kick him between the legs. If he goes down, he’s not a marine.

Tell the alleged “M”arine that it is now a felony to pretend to be a soldier or Marine when you arent.....
ANd just a clue.....ANYONE who readily claims to be a SEAL in everyday conversation, I can assure you, is NOT a SEAL!

Jonty, Jonty, Jonty!! I am guessing a real Marine would somehow “know” a kick was coming and block it. Seriously, I don’t even know if saying you are a Marine (and you aren’t) is a crime?

Simple, just ask him to recite The Rifleman’s Creed.

My former Preacher claimed to be a Ranger/POW in Korea with all kinds of medal. I found his high school annual with his picture in 1955 and he still uses his heroism in church. I don't think there is much you can do but try to shame them.

My own Brother was a viet Nam hero even though he got his General discharch in 1961. They are everywhere.

Do like Deniro in Ronin and ask him aggressively “what color is the boat house at Hereford?” and when he doesn’t answer go “AH-HA!! Fake!” ;)

I don’t think Stolen Valor will help with Marines, I thought they were SEAL advocates only, but their site may give you someplace to start.

That said, in my mind, this is a lose-lose situation. If he’s lying, and even if you can prove it, military service means less to some people than others. If you expose him, and he’s well-liked, you may find your peers view you as a busybody.

If you know without a doubt he’s faking, but he’s not wearing the uniform or using it to get benefits, your best bet may be to just file it away and relegate him to scum status in your dealings with him. If there’s even a shred of doubt, I’d advise you to be very cautious...Anything you say or do can backfire on you in a big way.

Thought this was a very interesting topic and I did a little Yahoo search.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090830065233AASgslW

I didn’t read it in it’s entirety, but the best answer was to write to the National Archives and make a Freedom of Information Act Request for his military record. God throws us different places in life. There is no reason to pretend something like that.

For at least 5 years, this kind of false claim was a Felony —the Stolen Valor Act, or something.

However about 8 months ago the Supremes rules that such confabulation was simply a form of speach and as such, protected.

Sadly I think it also covers claims recording the MOH.

You can embarrass the living hell out of the guy, but I don’t think u can actually get him arrested anymore.

Don’t even sweat it... Eventually, bullshit artists try to bullshit the wrong guy and get their ass handed to them.

Just a friendly piece of advice, since you are obviously not a Marine... Tread lightly just in case he is.

Unless you can prove he used such a claim to commit fraud, like obtaining employment or benefits, there’s really nothing you can do. The Supreme Court found the Stolen Valor act a violation of free speech.

“I am working with a guy”

Besides the official information sources, if we knew more about just what “I am working with” means, we might be able to offer more meaningful examples of how to deal with him.

Ask him where the “Rock” is. Where is 29 Palms? And ask him what Chesty said when surrounded by the enemy? Ask him what a “Butter Bar” is? Who is nicknamed “Top”? When is the Marine Corps birthday? Ask him what you have to do to qualify to be a Former Marine versus and Ex Marine (Only answer is to NOT have an airport named after you in PA, but what the heck)?

Simple, just ask him to recite The Rifleman’s Creed.

We only recited that once in boot, and that was 30 years ago in my case. Might not be the best test.

Have another (known authentic) Marine chat with him. Especially a contemporary of his. In less than a minute authenticity will be verified or a phony exposed.

Unless he’s using it to some material advantage, it’s probably better left alone. Even then... it’s important to be really, really sure. If he really is a former Marine it would be awful to accuse him of otherwise.

Actually I was thinking... did he put on his employment application that he was a Marine? If so, then he falsified a document in order to obtain employment. That may be an interesting angle on this for you.

We had a guy that claimed he was a Naval Aviator...I knew in my gut he wasn't. So I had a buddy of mine ask him if it were true that aircraft carrier numbers designated the date of their keels were laid.
When he said yes they were, I knew then he was a BS artist and laid into him every chance I got

The best way to approach this is to talk to the Marine Corps.

The United States Marine Corps Division of Public Affairs.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think this guy's purpose is, behind his claim of being a Marine? Is he trying to get some benefit from the claim? Is he using it to fulfill a job requirement? Is he using it to get attention? Most former military don't readily bring up their past service unless asked, or if they happen to come across other brothers in-arms, with whom they might share some common experience or story.

It would be interesting to hear and see how this person acts and talks around other known military, especially around other Marines. If they're willing to tell you all about their past experiences as civilians, but are reticent around other military, perhaps they're afraid of being exposed.

Do they have any pictures of themselves in uniform? Ask to see them in a flattering way. Especially if he's been in the service recently, he should almost certainly have photos. Ask to see his boot camp picture, or to see his bootcamp yearbook. Most naval ships on deployment have "cruise books," showing their crews and their ports of call. Perhaps the Marines offer something similar.

Otherwise, unless he's using his service to gain some advantage over you or others, I would ignore his claims, or take them with a grain of salt.
