Herman Cain blasts Roe v. Wade (from 2004)

Senate candidate defends the life of unborn children and calls conservatives to action

January 22, 2004

Herman Cain, conservative Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, issued the following statement on the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade:

Today we mourn the murder of millions of innocent lives because of the decision made 31 years ago by the United States Supreme Court to give doctors the right to end the life of an unborn child. Unbelievably, the decision of Roe v. Wade shows that our Nation still chooses to place human convenience over the sanctity of human life.

No great nation can prosper when life is not valued. Once the Supreme Court decided that the right to life was obsolete, the very basis of our country was lost. A civilized society is marked by its treatment of the defenseless. When the most innocent of human life, the life of an unborn child, can be ended for the sake of convenience, the moral fabric of our society is destroyed.

The Declaration of Independence is very clear: We have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our Founding Fathers understood that order.

You can pursue happiness as long as you do not infringe upon someone else’s liberty. You can have liberty as long as you do not infringe upon someone else’s life. And life begins at conception.

How many great accomplishments and discoveries have been lost because of legalized abortion? Have we missed finding the cure for cancer because a life was ended prematurely? Did we lose the next Albert Einstein, Ronald Reagan, Amelia Earhart or Martin Luther King, because the legal termination of life continues? As long as legalized killings are permitted, we not only lose a life, we lose all the potential that life has to offer. Not only do individuals suffer, the United States as a country suffers every time an abortion occurs.

Infanticide will continue as long as our society accepts the lie that a mother has the right to terminate a child’s life. These women are sadly comforted by the blanket of Roe v. Wade. But there is still hope. If people today will continue to unite together to fight against legalized abortion and make their voices heard, we can make a difference. Life needs to be respected and celebrated, not terminated.

ending abortion is the most important issue to a lot of people. If electing President Obama would mean an end to the abortion bloodbath, I'd vote to reelect President Obama.

Cain will not appoint justices who will work to overturn Roe unless it is by accident. He simply believes the government should not tell people they cannot terminate a pregnancy.

CONCORD, N.H.—Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain clarified his position on abortion Thursday, a day after saying he opposed the procedure but didn't believe the government or other people should have a role in the decision to terminate a pregnancy.

In an interview Wednesday with CNN, Cain said he believes life begins at conception. "And abortion under no circumstances," he added. But Cain also said "it's not the government's role or anybody else's role to make that decision."

"I can have an opinion on an issue without it being a directive on the nation," he said. "The government shouldn't be trying to tell people everything to do, especially when it comes to social decisions that they need to make."

That's not enough from Cain. Conservatives have tended to play moderate on the abortion issue while the leftists swing for the fences and hit judicial home runs in placing judges who always seem to be available to thwart the legislative will of the people to restrict “abortion rights”.

From reading that interview, I gathered the interviewer changed questions in the middle of Cain’s answer, so that his answer to the second question could be construed as an answer to the first.

(But a reporter wouldn’t do that! Would he??)

Regardless of the reporter’s intent and based upon Cain’s answer, can you honestly say he would appoint justices that would overturn Roe?

I cannot envision that.

Beyond what I’ve read today, and bits and pieces recently, I know very little about the man. So no, I can’t say that he would. Perhaps you know more about him than I.

Frankly though, I’m neither waiting for nor expecting the Court to overturn Roe. They’re not the “conscience” of America. We are, all of us. And we need a president who will take the political lead in putting an end to the bloodshed of our children - a president who will direct his considerable power against it, who will give hope to those already fighting in this cause, who will devise and lead the campaign that will put this abomination (to use Lincoln’s words) “in the course of ultimate extinction.”

Forget the Court. Elect a man with the courage to fight for children whose own parents want them dead.

I would agree that a Constitutional Amendment would be the best bet, but given Cain’s statement, I am not sure he would do that.

Perry has said he would support an Amendment defining marriage as between 1 man and 1 woman so it might be possible that he could be asked to lead the charge on abortion as well.

In the meantime, I would settle for an overturn of Roe —that would once again allow the states to decide for themselves.

In an email today:

As to my political view on abortion...again, I am pro-life. End of story.

As President, I will appoint judges who understand the original intent of the Constitution. Judges who are committed to the rule of law know that the Constitution contains no right to take the life of unborn children.

I will oppose government funding of abortion. I will veto any legislation that contains funds for Planned Parenthood. I will do everything that a President can do, consistent with his constitutional role, to advance the culture of life.

Life, liberty & pursuit of happiness starts with unborn life
The Founding Fathers got it right. The Founding Fathers got it right because of those fundamental principles: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They also got it in the right order. That wasn’t an accident. Their vision meant that you could pursue happiness in America as long as you don’t infringe upon the liberties of somebody else. And you can pursue all the liberties that you want as long as you don’t infringe upon the life of anybody else. And that starts with the life of the unborn.

Defund Planned Parenthood; intent was to kill black babies
I absolutely would defund Planned Parenthood—not because I don’t believe in planning parenthood, [but because] Planned Parenthood as an organization is an absolute farce on the American people.

People who know the history of Margaret Sanger, who started Planned Parenthood, they know that the intention was not to help young women who get pregnant to plan their parenthood. No—it was a sham to be able to kill black babies.

Life begins at conception, period
I believe that life begins at conception, period. And that means that I will have to see enough evidence that someone I would appoint shares that same view. I believe that the current Supreme Court is leaning too much to the liberal side.

I’m a Christian, I’ve been a Christian all my life. I’ve been a believer in the Bible since I was 10 years old. I’m very active in my church, and there is no way I would compromise my religious beliefs about the sanctity of life. And so it starts with, will they have demonstrated, in some of their other rulings, if they come from the federal judge bench, whether or not they also share that.

Because I believe that the principles that our Founding Fathers cherished, when they founded this country, and wrote the Declaration of Independence which inspired the Constitution, they were based upon biblical principles. I want to get back to those principles as president, if I run and get elected—not rewrite those do

Cain once said:

The suggestion from the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza came in an exchange about why the GOP hopeful doesn’t consider himself an African American.

“I am an American. Black. Conservative,” he said in explaining his view on the matter. “I don’t use African American, because I’m American, I’m black and I’m conservative. I don’t like people trying to label me. African American is socially acceptable for some people, but I am not some people.”

Cain said that he considers himself to be “a black man in America” and feels stronger ties to the United States than to Africa. He suggested his perspective has been informed by the fact that he can trace most of his ancestors to the U.S. and it also “goes back to slavery.”

The presidential contender went on to draw a contrast between himself and the president, who he described as “more of an international,”

And what if Roe is overturned, and the states all decide - for themselves - that killing babies is just okey-dokey with them?

No, Roe is not the horror, but merely the legal whitewash over the horror. Our country needs to be brought back to its senses from 40 years of anti-baby propaganda. Then and only then, I’m convinced, will it turn against this horror, toppling Roe with it.

Letting the states decide matters appropriate to them is fine. But this is not such a matter. Why does this nation exist, after all? The Declaration claims the purpose of “these United States” is to secure the right to life (among others). Should a threat to this right arise - whether from an individual citizen, a state, or any other entity - the nation has a duty to act. This is why abortion CAN be outlawed at the federal level, and why it MUST be should any state attempt to legalize it. If the nation fails in this duty, it has failed utterly.

This “let the states decide” argument is, for the anti-baby crowd, nothing but a fall-back position. Should Roe ever be overturned, with this argument they’ll still have on their side more than enough of us to keep the killing going while they regroup.

No, Roe isn’t “bad law” because it usurped states’ rights. It’s bad law because it gives cover to murder and overthrows the very purpose of this nation. Any proposed solution which fails to reverse that fall far too short.
