Appalled by Qaddafi’s Murder
The Thinking Housewife ^ | Laura Wood

Posted on 10/24/2011 2:50:06 PM PDT by ventanax5

I saw the grisly footage of Qaddafi’s murder on television. I had first to turn off the sound. Then, ashamed, I turned off the television. I have nothing more to say than that I am appalled that my country had anything to do with this grotesque caricature of justice. Actually, to call it a grotesque caricature of justice is to trivialize it. I have no words for it.

I’m not naive and I realize that the U.S. has taken part in assassinations, killings, etc., but there is something about this that simply takes my breath away. I want nothing to do with it. I’m in a complete state of dissociation with our political leaders, Republican and Democrat. I am thoroughly disaffected.

I’m not exactly mourning Qaddafi’s death. He was a very bad man who killed Americans. But what do you do? He seems to have reformed a bit in latter years. He stuck to his treaties and stopped baiting the U.S. He even said a few conciliatory, realistic things about Israel. I’m not saying this turned him into a Good Guy, but it showed he was sane. Now he’s gone and we’re supposed to rejoice? No thank you! Libya will turn to hell.

I do not believe I am alone in feeling so disgusted with just about everything, except my own life, which is going rather well. So I can’t be accused of generalizing my own misery. I am not miserable. Our politics is.

Laura writes:

I am appalled too. The average American seems to accept the media’s pro-democracy fairy tale. Our country took part in the assassination of someone who posed no imminent threat to us and, in doing so, aided avowed enemies. This is not a fairy tale, but a horror story.

Arabs should only be admitted to congresses of civilized nations when they quit exhibiting childish enjoyment in the infliction of pain/suffering upon the helpless ! Spent some time in the ME and saw countless examples of this cultural characteristic ! >PS

I knew a Girl on that flight. 20 yrs old.

I had distant connections with two people on the same flight, and much closer ties to several servicemen in the Berlin disco 25 or so years ago. Nope, I'm not sad to see Qaddaffi go, nor am I concerned about a "fair trial" for a mass murderer in a lawless country. I am worried that his replacement will be even worse, but supporting our worst enemies seems to be the current foreign policy.

I agree, silverleaf -- all that stuff ticks me off to no end. Especially Obama giving OBL an islamic funeral aboard a U.S. carrier.

This so-called "Arab Spring" could very well result in an islamic caliphate that would make the (relatively) secular regional dictatorships that Saddam, Moammar, and Hosni presided over look like a western democracies by comparison. It's Obama's vision -- a sort of islamic socialist caliphate, where sharia law is the law of the land but the gov't provides the cradle to grave survival needs of its enslaved people. Right up his alley.

But I can't shed a tear or get outraged about Gaddafi getting his street-justice comeuppance. He had his chance at a trial, but chose to fight it out instead.

Had a Republican been in the White House, they would have been appalled at Gadhafi's fate....instead, they grab the pom poms, when a Democrat is in the White House.

Yep, that's their MO. They'd also have hailed the overthrow of Saddam's regime as a "victory against tyranny" had a Dem President been in office at the time and conducted the war precisely as Pres. Bush did. A very transparent bunch.

In the fall of 1963, when South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem faced an impending coup d’etat, former vice president Richard Nixon warned that the choice facing South Vietnam was not between Diem and someone better but Diem and someone worse—and the chaos that engulfed the country following Diem’s overthrow and murder proved him right.

Even though Qaddafi was no friend of America and the West, as Diem was, the same might be true for Libya.

“schizophrenic foreign policy “

Great analogy right there....

You know what’s REALLY tiresome? Those who try to buttress their arguments by claiming second-hand victimhood. E.G. “I knew someone who went to school with and may have possibly known someone who was on the Pan Am flight that went down over Lockerbie.”

You get no special status, no moral high ground, people.

The FACT remains that we MURDERED someone.

To support that is to support vigilante justice and the total destruction of any semblance of civilization.

The Bush administration captured a monster and turned him over to the authorities in his native land, for the administration of justice in accordance with their law.

The Obama administration simply went out and murdered their “monster”.

That is a powerful, disturbing and true statement. We as Americans are much better than this. My hope is the man in the White House is the reason for these actions, it matches his ideological bent to me. It is not my philosophy, and I hope a lot of us disagree with the non diplomatic methods employed by the U.S. . The rule of law is all we really have.

My point is not "oh, dear, I'm a delicate victim," but rather, "I have been watching that murdering tyrant for decades because I had personal reasons for caring." Perhaps if you understood Qaddafi's direct role in multiple mass murders as well as those who have followed the details of his violent career, you'd be less annoyed at this outcome. Perhaps not, but I don't see either the Constitution or the standards of civilization as suicide pacts.

The FACT remains that we MURDERED someone.

The fact remains that people are killed in war, that's part of the point. While formally declaring war has gone out of style, Obama announced on Twitter and his FarceBook or via some such formal venue that we'd be following Europe's lead in intervening because we have no direct interests in Libya. That makes it a war, sort of, so I don't see our peripheral role (actions that allowed the rebels to capture him rather than us directly capturing him and turning him over) as murder. I also don't see killing this well-deserving thug as serving our national interests, but it's not murder in the moral sense unless all killing in war is murder.

To support that is to support vigilante justice and the total destruction of any semblance of civilization.

I do support vigilante justice - whenever the rule of law fall short of delivering lawful justice. When Christians are raped and forcibly converted to Islam and the local courts support the rapists, I support solving the problem by extra-legal means. When Americans are murdered by the tyrant who sets the laws in his country, I support hunting him down and killing him, even if that administration of justice is delayed.

The Bush administration captured a monster and turned him over to the authorities in his native land, for the administration of justice in accordance with their law. The Obama administration simply went out and murdered their “monster”.

The Bush administration turned that well-deserving monster over to a government that held a trial as a formality and then hanged him as he deserved. Obama, as inept and pathetic as he is, merely authorized remote missile firings that allowed Libya's rebels to capture and kill another monster. The difference between a formal trial with a predetermined outcome and the Libyan version does not bother me. We all know, even from Qaddafi's own words, that he was a monster who deserved to die. That is good enough for me.

Did you express the same outrage when Reagan tried (alas, unsuccessfully) to kill Kaddafi without a trial? Somehow I doubt it. ...if you were even alive at the time. Man, talk about riding a high horse.

Bull. He ordered missiles fired at the Kaddafi’s compound, but ole Moammar got out a few minutes before the missiles struck.

Unless you think Reagan tipped him off.

Had things played out like this while Bush was president they would be outside the White house now demanding his extradition to the Hague.

Yup.

Have you noticed that ever since Obama came to power, secular dictatorships in the middle east are getting replaced by islamist quasi democracies?

We know that Obama’s real sympathies are with radical muzzies.

And Israel position is not looking secure in the region and we know Obozzo hates the only real democracy in the region with a passion and shares the muzzies views that Palestine should be a seperate state.

If this GWB doing the same, democrats would have rushed out with impeachment proceedings.

The scumbag Ubama assassinates the al Quaida leader bin Laden and then takes credit for the brutal murder of Qaddafi, even as he continues to send in the drones to blow up Islamic wedding parties and funerals all across the Pakistani countryside... that’s some Nobel Peace Prize winner right there.
