The Prepper Movement: Why Are Millions Of Preppers Feverishly Preparing
TheAverageJoeNewsBlogg ^ | 10/25/11

Posted on 10/25/2011 10:59:43 AM PDT by Kartographer

In America today, there are millions of “preppers” that are working feverishly to get prepared for what they fear is going to happen to America. There is a very good chance that some of your neighbors or co-workers may be preppers. You may even have noticed that some of your relatives and friends have been storing up food and have been trying to convince you that we are on the verge of “the end of the world as we know it”. A lot of preppers like to keep their preparations quiet, but everyone agrees that the prepper movement is growing. Some estimate that there are four million preppers in the United States today. Others claim that there are a lot more than that. In any event, there are certainly a lot of preppers out there. So exactly what are all these preppers so busy preparing for?

I’m not quiet about it. I used to laugh at survivalists. Not this time. I quit my job in Seattle, bought a farm in Kentucky, found work here, and am most definitely preparing. It’s called putting your money where your mouth is.

My biggest concern is getting my adult kids here if this thing goes down fast.

Smart ones, that is. If everyone knows you are prepared, they'll know where to come for help, and eventually you'll have to deny the help or will be faced with defending what you've got against others trying to take it.

I wish I could find preppers in my area to work with. I talked to my local selectment about having the town prepared, and you would have thought I grew a second heat.

I'll go so far as to state flatly that 90% of the aware do their thing and shut up.
The ones that can't help themselves as to how clever and prepared they are, are the attention whores, painting targets on themselves.
Not exactly the sharpest tools in the box.

My brother was telling me that he heard a guy on the radio over this past weekend talking about us ‘horders’; he was accusing people of causing food shortages and that all of this was BS and purchases should be limited etc etc.

Point being, you can bet that this is an idea being considered by the insane government we now have. Even if it isn’t being talked about I would bet in some dark conference room somewhere in D.C., ideas are being formulated on how to control the food supply.

Kartographer, have you seen this? Incredible first hand experiences posted by a man who was in Bosnia during that conflict. I’m just starting to read it now.

Maybe it’s been posted on FR already, I would have no idea if only a link could be posted or Selco’s comments copied and posted. It would be a real eye opener for people who haven’t thought things through...

my shtf expirience-wartime:

OK, i wanna share with you my own experience. (be patient with my English, i am from far away )
I am from Bosnia, and as some of you may know it was hell here from 92-95, anyway, for 1 whole year i lived and survived in a city of 50 000- 60 000 residents WITHOUT: electricity, fuel, running water, real food distribution, or distribution of any goods, or any kind of organized law or government. The city was surrounded for 1 year and in that city actually it was SHTF situation.

We did not have organized army or police force, there was groups of defenders, actually anybody who had a gun, fight for his own house and his own family.

Some of us was better prepared, but most of families had food for couple of days, some of us had pistol, few owned AK-47 when all started.

Anyway, after one month or two, gangs started with their nasty job, hospital looked like butchery, police force vanished, 80 percent of hospital staff gone home.
I was lucky, my family was big in that time (15 members in one big house, 5-6 pistols, 3 Kalashnikov s) so we lived and survived, most of us.

I remember US Air force dropped MRE every 10 days (god bless USA for that) as help for surrounded city, it just was not enough. Some of houses had little gardens with some vegetables, most did not.
After three months rumors started abouth first deaths from starvation, deaths from low temperatures, we stripped every door , window frame from abandoned houses for heating, i burned all my own furniture for heating, lot of people died from diseases, mostly from bad water (two of my family members), we used rain water for drink, several times i ate pigeons, once i ate rat.
Money did not worth sh..
we traded things, black market worked, few examples: for 1 corned beef can you could have woman for couple of hours(sounds bad, but it was reality) i remember, most of that womans were just desperate mothers, candles, lighters, antibiotics, fuel, batteries, rifle ammo and of course food, we fight like animals for that.
In situation like that lot of things change, most of people turned to monsters, it was ugly.
Strength was in the numbers, if you were alone in the house, you ve been probably robbed and killed, no matter how well armed.

Anyway, war ended, again thanks to America (and again god bless USA for that)
It is not important witch side had right in that war.
It was almost 20 years ago, but believe me, for me it was just like yesterday, i remember everything, and i think i learned a lot.
Me and my family are prepared now,i am well armed, stocked and educated.
It is not important what going to happen, earthquake, war, tsunami, aliens terrorists, important thing is that something gonna be.
And from my expirience, you can not survive alone, strength is in the numbers, be close with your family, prepare with them, choose your friends wisely and prepare with them too.

And at the end, this is my first post, and my English is not so good, so don t judge me too hard.

######

It has never been “explained”, because that is certainly not the intended role of Gold accumulation. Gold is for preservation of wealth, while a semblance of social order still exists. If society completely breaks down, Gold will have little utility; no one is denying that.

Intelligent people prepare for a gradation of scenarios, not just flat-out survival mode.

Why can't we BOTH accumulate PMs, AND plan ALSO for Doomsday environments? They are not mutually exclusive.

Ha! The “entitlement” crowd wouldn’t know how to use the dehydrated stuff we have stored. If it’s not pizza from Pizza Hut, or frozen tv dinners; they’re at a loss. Oh, and the powdered milk? Ha, again! If it isn’t a two liter soda, fergit it.

Our garden stuff? If we’ll pick it for them and deliver it; they’ll still now know how to fix it.

If I recall correctly there is a law on the books from the WW II era that makes Hoarding illegal and liable for some very severe penalties.

And the definition for hoarding was written very loosely as I recall.

As someone pointed out in previous thread, this is the first time in America’s history that having more than a couple of weeks worth of food in your home is considered strange.

Nail on the head. I suspect that a lot of people wouldn't think to count themselves as "preppers" or "survivalists" who have 30 days' or so of supplies on hand just as a matter of course.

There's a lucrative industry in selling MREs, but for most uses that's silly. If you live someplace where you're likely to encounter a blizzard, keep a couple in the trunk in case you're trapped in the car. At home, it's simple enough to be prepared for 99% of scenarios: just keep a supply of canned veggies, dry basics like beans, rice and ramen noodles, and a big bag of charcoal briquettes. Maybe some energy bars and multivitamins. A well-stocked freezer will hold you for the first few days.

The key is to remember that you're not stocking a Civil Defense shelter, where you stockpile food and forget about it for decades. Don't buy "survival food" that will go to waste if the world doesn't end in the next 3-5 years; buy food you'll actually eat, eat the cans closest to their expiration date, and replenish the supply as you go.

Interesting. Wonder what the definition is? How much constitutes hoarding?

As early as last year congress has passed laws allowing manipulation of the food supply. Don’t have the link handy but it was pushed through in the lame duck nightmare.

People best wake up. There’s a madman in the house. Things are falling in the middle east making way to install a caliphate (which was the goal)rapidly. Keep your eyes open on Saudi Arabia.

Now he is going full throttle here to usurp congress on his various marxists bills. It is my impression that he is trying to push us over the cliff before the election next year.

“My biggest concern is getting my adult kids here if this thing goes down fast.”

If they’re going to do it, they had better do it fast (get there, when the time comes). Unless they live on the west coast, they should be able to get to you within a day, two tops. When the first indications come, (an attack, etc.), they have to leave, and within a number of minutes, not hours, lest they get stuck on the roads, out of gas, and stranded.

I’ve talked with my folks, and let them know that if something catastrophic happens (ie. an EMP) and I would have to come by bike or on foot, that if it’s winter, we’re essentially not coming, and if it not winter, that they can expect me in 2 to 4 weeks. I said if I’m not there by then, don’t expect me. They know I am actually probably better off where I am now, but I don’t live near family. If and when something happens, I’ll make the decision to stay or go, based upon what the situation is. If it’s bad, like an invasion, I’ll probably go. If it’s TEOTWAWKI, I’ll probably call and tell them I love them, and say my goodbyes, if possible.

I also told them that if it’s not catastrophic, I would call first, and be there by the end of the second day, and that likewise, if I wasn’t there by night 2 that I wasn’t coming (or at least not to expect me). It’s important that people understand that if they don’t go as soon as something happens, they’re not going to get there. If there is a situation like an EMP, you have maybe a week to get where you’re going, 3-4 days to make up your mind will get you stranded. If it’s a nuke, etc. and you have infrastruction, electricity, etc., then you only have hours, long distance travel may be impossible by day 2, which means you better be almost there by day one.

Just some food for though.

I am currently preparing Disaster Prep kits for my kids and a few friends.

Each kit contains:

#10 can of hulled barley
#10 can of popcorn
#10 can of instant potatoes
#10 can of quick cook oatmeal
Small can of dehydrated cheddar cheeze

Packed in vacuum sealed mylar bags with oxygen absorbers:

20 lbs. white rice
8 lbs. dehydrated pinto beans
1 lb. nonfat dry milk
Glass jar of sugar
Glass jar of salt
Assorted spices in small glass jars

The whole mess fits in a small ice chest which can be stored in the back of a closet. At normal indoor temps, most of this will still be good to eat in 20 years

I have eaten rice and beans before that I stored in less than optimal conditions after 15 years, and it was OK.

If you want to do something similar you need mylar food bags, oxygen absorbers (see Walton Feed below), a vacuum sealer (Food Saver), and bulk bags of food (try a restaurant supply). The only problem that I have had in the past was putting up food with too much moisture so it went moldy. This time I am drying my beans, etc. in opened jars in the front seat of my truck since it gets pretty hot sitting out in the sun.

waltonfeed.com is a great supplier. Buy a pallet at a time to save on shipping. Thanks to them I mill my own flour and make great bread at home with black strap molasses.

My greatest survival assets are my good neighbors. I have stored extra food to share with the needy. Every-man-for-himself does not work for me.

Heh, heh, sorry, couldn’t resist!

Anyway, I was in fact puzzled that a small township local government would respond to your suggestions for community preparedness, which at that level should not have been difficult to achieve, with such a head in the sand attitude (giggle).

I live in hurricane country here in South Carolina where civil defense authorities recommend at least a week’s emergency provisions in each home, and two or more is not considered unreasonable following the Katrina event.

Here, of course, the unspoken suggestion is to be well armed. Our Castle Doctrine has been proven legally airtight, especially during hours of darkness.

I use the bread machine recipe for whole wheat bread with my home-milled flour. I use Walton’s 8 grain mix to mill.

I go a bit heavy on molasses and substitute walnut oil for butter. If the bread is too dense for you, try adding 1/3 of regular white flour instead of all whole grain.

I use the dark setting for baking.

I have mixed in fruit, e.g., raisins and tried various nut oils instead of butter.

Just experiment and see what works for you.

By mixing in oats and barley you can make a super healthy whole grain bread that is low glycemic index and lowers cholesterol. A big slice is a meal.

This is the kind of approach that yield healthy food at very low cost, and the bread machine makes it easy.
