Occupy Wall Street Beats Tea Party in Searches on Google
Mashable ^ | 10/27/2011 | Sarah Kessler

Posted on 10/27/2011 3:27:19 PM PDT by LesDowrey

Google has added its perspective — with a search-data-based popularity contest — to the comparisons between Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party.

The data rules in favor of Occupy Wall Street. Users searched for the nascent movement more than the Tea Party for the first time in the United States on Sept. 24, according to Google’s politics blog. Search traffic for the term “Occupy Wall Street” has remained higher ever since.

Vermont, Oregon and New York are the biggest searchers of Occupy Wall Street. Tea Party search traffic peaks every April during tax season.

Because Occupy Wall Street has gotten a good deal of media attention throughout the past several weeks, it seems unfair to compare its search traffic to the Tea Party’s search traffic from only September and October. But Google notes that, even when each movement’s historical peak amount of search traffic is compared, Occupy Wall Street still has the slightly higher number of searches.

The search giant also analyzed recent media coverage of each movement to determine whether its comparison was fair. Between Oct. 7 and last week, the volume of news stories about Occupy Wall Street was only slightly higher than the volume of news stories about the Tea Party.

The OCCUPY protests are a more inclusive organization. They openly accept naked Communists and neo-Nazis in their ranks and the media thinks this is just fine, not even newsworthy.

I've been searching for "occupy wall street", too. But, it's been terms like:

occupy wall street crime
occupy wall street rape
occupy wall street defecation
occupy wall street riot
occupy wall street filth

Join the fun, and boost the rankings. :-)

"the volume of news stories about Occupy Wall Street was only slightly higher than the volume of news stories about the Tea Party."

ROFL

Yeah; the Tea Party is reported as negative/biased hit pieces, and they count those as "reporting coverage".

The OWS is portrayed as a tidal wave sweeping the country, and positive coverage 90% of the time in the State-Run-Media (which INCLUDES Google).

Very underwhelming results, IMHO.

The Tea Parties are pretty quiet right now but then again, we don’t throw month long street tantrums.

No surprise as to the “survey” results. There is more media chatter about OWS and their goals, or lack of it. There is certainly more media interest in OWS, driving popularity. And I imagine people living within 10 miles of these occupied sites want to know if it’s safe to drive to work, or will they drive into a hail of rubber bullets and CS.

TEA Party, on the other hand, is ignored as a matter of policy.

I was there at the Tea Party. and let me tell you, this
shanty towns ain’t like the Tea Party. reminds me of the college apartheid
shanties of the 80s.
we had many more events. HUndreds of thousands, instead of 100.

What desperation by the Mainstream Media to force this down our throat
just like the Obamacare law.

Force it down our throat.

The Occupypublicparks crowd is much younger and far more tech saavy. These people do nothing but use a computer all day. Folks interested in the Tea Party tend to be older and connect more exclusively by email.

That’s what I was thinking.

Also....don’t sites like Kos encourage lefties to do many of certain kinds of searches in order to impact Google results?

Yup. Though I'd still say the biggest factor for why occupypublicparks gets so many hits is it is aimed a younger people that spend vastly more time online. Someone aged 40-50 and above are just more likely to get their news from TV, the radio or perhaps email among family/friends - and that is much more the Tea Party types. The younger crowd grew up on the internet and are used to searching immediately for anything that interests them.
