New York Times columnist David Brooks often receives the scorn of many conservatives for taking positions contrary to ideology in the name of moderation and smart politics. But what did Brooks think of Herman Cains Web ad featuring his campaign manager smoking a cigarette at the end of it?
Brooks impression might surprise some. In his regular appearance on Fridays PBS NewsHour, host Judy Woodruff inquired about the ad and Brooks all but gave it two-thumbs up.
My heart melts for that smile, Brooks said. I just I like it. Everybody is going crazy, Oh, its terrible. First of all, that guy Mark Block, that guy I went into journalism to hang around guys like that. I thought it would be fun to hang around neer-do-wells like that.

Mark Block smoking > The pleat in Obama's slacks
Clever of both Cain and Block
All this crap—when Obama smokes like a chimney. You’d think the EPA would shut him down.
I like the ad - in your face!
Has anyone thought that Cain is trying to appeal directly to the smokers of this country? Smokers have been attacked like few other (besides Christians) by the nanny-state Left. The smoker here is also a symbol for not just smokers, but for everything the nanny-state has over-regulated, over-taxed, and persecuted.
The ad is brilliant. Just brilliant.
My only qualm is that the guy doesn’t appear to be much of a smoker. You can barely see any smoke he exhales.
(Full disclosure - I don’t smoke.)
Now I'm worried.
Agreed...can't remember the last time I watched a political ad several times on purpose. :-)
I've noticed that the leftmedia are beginning to pull out the old playbook and are resorting to mocking Cain and trying, desperately, to portray him as a loon, unfit for the presidency. Luckily for America, the left pretty much used up all their credibility with years of doing the same crap to Sarah Palin with absolutely no basis in fact, just hatred of a normal, striving American wife and mother who didn't toe the liberal line.
Few Americans take the leftmedia very seriously, anymore. The attempt to marginalize Herman Cain will fail. He is clearly intelligent, well-educated, personable and has a lot to offer beyond '999'. His rise in popularity is no fluke. He must have the Obama gang scared to death. A genuine Black man, born and raised in America. A man who worked hard and actually achieved substantial success in life, unlike Obama, a total phony.
Well said—every last word of it!
Seems most everyone missed this, along with Shields.
“thought it would be fun to hang around neer-do-wells like that.
neer-do-well (plural neer-do-wells)
A person without a means of support; an idle, worthless person; a loafer; a person who is ineffectual, unsuccessful, or completely lacking in merit; a good-for-nothing.
A person who is up to no good; a rogue.
Explains Brook’s love for 0.
I love this Ad. It’s a direct stab in the heart of political correctness, and does a beautiful job of it. Kudu’s to Cain for the best Ad of the political season.
I note that the ad has well over 1.2 million views on YouTube...of those; there are 6700 ‘dislikes’...probably from people who would like to see every smoker in the country euthanized.
Only thing that would have improved it would have been him tossing a curly light bulb in the dump. He’d get even more votes from that, I think.
OOOK. Proof (I guess) that even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

I couldn’t even find it on Youtube. All I could find were nasty spoofs. I gave up and found the link on FR.
Thanks. I guarantee it would have way more hits if it came up when the obvious key words were typed in. Youtube is a dishonest broker. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are purposefully making the real ad harder to find than the spoofs.
