Romney says he’s not a flip-flopper, but ‘a man of steadiness and constancy’

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney discussed his reputation as a flip-flopper at Wednesday night’s CNBC Republican presidential debate, disputing the characterization and calling himself “a man of steadiness and constancy.”

Romney was asked to address the “issue of character” after he mentioned the auto bailout, which he has been accused of switching positions on. The Democratic National Committee has been bracketing Romney in Michigan with ads attacking him for flip-flopping on the issue.

Romney is really stupid to go there. All anyone has to do is point to his abortion flip flop, the grand-daddy of all flipflops.

Romney could be correct. He might be a flop-flipper.

"A political party cannot be all things to all people.
It must represent certain fundamental beliefs
which must not be compromised to political expediency
or simply to swell its numbers."

--  President Ronald Reagan

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party
over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged
to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.
Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates
wouldn’t make any sense at all.""

A steady statist by his actions. Who cares about his recent rhetoric.

I'm an ordinary man, who desires nothing more than just an ordinary chance,
to live exactly as he likes, and do precisely what he wants.
An average man am I, of no eccentric whim, Who likes to live his life, free of strife
Doing whatever he thinks is best for him, Well, just an ordinary man

But, LET A WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE and your serenity is through!
She'll redecorate your home, from the cellar to the dome
Then go to the enthralling fun of overhauling you
Let a woman in your life, and you're up against a wall,
Make a plan and you will find, she has something else in mind,
And so rather than do either you do something else that neither likes at all!

Well, come to think of it, “steadiness” and “consistency” are relative terms. I agree that he is as steady as a weathervane (which is quite stable in one dimension) and he has the consistency of taffy; he can stretch himself to fit any position depending on what he thinks you want to hear.

I’m still making up my mind about Romney ....

.... But OBVIOUSLY Romney had to get along with DEMS to make anything happen in MASS when he was basically ... the ONLY Republican in the entire State!

Let’s have a little perspective here.

I think Romney has put his finger into the air and seen it come down with the wind blowing toward being a man of steadiness and constancy. That’s what’s “in” this week.

Next week, if the meme is how he needs to be able to bend and alter his position as a response to “boots on the ground” well then he’ll be a malleable, pliable pillar of a man going against his past beliefs because that’s what he believes is right at this moment.

And he’ll say that with just as much conviction as he said this line tonight.
