One hundred fifty years ago, Civil War broke out in the United States. In my opinion, this war was the worst war in our 235 + year history. It divided us as a people on many issues - slavery only one of them. The casualties - including both the Union and Confederate soldiers - were the greatest of any of our wars - even the American casualties during World War II - the worst war of the 20th century.

Well i didnt lose anyone in that civil war...
But a 5th great grand father was killed in the first Civil War, commonly called the American Revolution...

The English colonists sure were divided in their loyalties to the rebels or to be loyal to England.
Many of the Huguenots were loyalists...
Even John Jay the Patriot said when asked why he didnt want to fight against England, that his ancestors were Huguenots and if it wasnt for England allowing his family to flee there from France they would not have survived...
I had both Huguenot ancestors and also Palatine German ancestors whose descendants stayed loyal to the country that had sheltered their families...
one of my ancestors was a grandmother my age when she was arrested and imprisoned because she would not sign the oath for the rebels...
She ran her fathers trading post near the Mohawk river in Herkimer County, NY...
her 10 yo granddaughter and other family members went to prison also...one other granddaughter died there..
and her son was burnt to death when the rebels destroyed the trading post..
My 6th gg Sarah Kast McGinnis was the American born daughter of Palatine Germans and is recognized as a Loyalist..
I have a certificate for her...and one for her daughter..
and I working on one for the daughters husband who was killed fighting the rebels...He was the descendant of Huguenots..
In 1773 some more of my Huguenot ancestors had gone to the Susquehanna River Valley in Pennsylvania from New Rochelle, NY..Bradford, Wyoming, Lucerne counties...
In 1776 their homes were burnt and their land confiscated...
They joined the Loyalists and fought in the war...
For them I have 2 more certificates...
Soon I’ll have 5 in all...
