Obama’s Offshore Ban: Good for Rallying Democrat Base, Bad for the Unemployed Worker
ATR ^ | 2011-11-18 | Christopher Prandoni and Marshall Bornemann

First it was Keystone, now it’s coast-to-coast. Scared to affront his base in an election year, Obama has imposed a five-year drilling ban on a majority of offshore areas. This is particularly disappointing given America’s persistent unemployment.

Unfortunately, this comes as no surprise. Obama’s recent decision to punt on Keystone may have effectively killed the project, and the thousands of jobs needed to complete the pipeline. Like Keystone, the Department of Interior’s five year lease plan leaves hundreds of thousands of jobs on the table.

The Institute for Energy Research’s Dan Simmons points out a few facts about offshore oil and natural gas production: · 2.2 percent of offshore areas are leased for oil and natural gas production · Oil and natural gas production on federal lands has fallen by over 40 percent since 2000 · Since 2000, oil production on private and state lands has risen by 11 percent and natural gas production has riven by 40 percent · When President Obama was elected, all offshore lands were available for leasing except for a small area near Florida’s coast · The Obama administration’s new five-year plan doesn’t allow oil and natural gas exploration or production on the vast majority of taxpayer-owned offshore areas IER’s chart illustrates how oil and natural gas production fell off a cliff once Obama assumed office:

House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (R-Wash) articulates what is at stake:

The President’s plan is to simply say ‘no’ to new energy production and ‘no’ to new American jobs created by new offshore drilling. It’s a plan that is sending American jobs overseas, forfeiting new revenue, and denying access to American energy that would lessen our dependence on hostile Middle Eastern oil..

Good by to jobs in Ohio!

Headline: Obama USDA delays shale drilling, up to 200k jobs

“President Obama’s United States Department of Agriculture has delayed shale gas drilling in Ohio for up to six months by cancelling a mineral lease auction for Wayne National Forest (WNF). The move was taken in deference to environmentalists, on the pretext of studying the effects of hydraulic fracturing....”

Obama has also closed some areas in Ohio from drilling. Has anyone ever tabulated all of the jobs lost from Obama shutting down US energy production?

These actions amount to a leftist bending us over and just giving it to America right where it hurts. Are the American people and teh republicans realizing this?

Oil development destroyed for five years with Iran threatening to close teh Straits of Hormuz, $100 a barrel oil, massive unemployment.

There are no words strong enough for how wrong this is. This liberal whack job president thinks he is saving the oceans, etc he is a dangerous kook.

Not only that, but other countries will be drilling in almost the same location just a few miles further off OUR OWN SHORE!

So we still have ALL of the environmental risks, with NONE of the benefits (jobs, oil, income)

Can someone please make a TV campaign ad showing the Cuban/Chinese oil platform drilling in the area made of limits to US drillers by President Zero and emphasize China’s abysmal environmental record?

Obama is a man of the left. By definition, he doesn’t care about regular Americans.

I think Obama is over-estimating the numbers of people who will be pleased with these decisions to restrict energy production.

By a long shot.

He’s judging this by the volume of donations from the enviro lobby in the last few years, but it won’t be there this time. The hoax is being exposed more and more each day.

Only three years ago, nearly everyone was convinced that not only was the Earth warming, the principal culprit was CO2. Now that gas prices are hitting everyone where it hurts, nearly everyone is beginning to question the anthropogenic origin of warming.

The power of the enviro lobby comes from donations, and the money will dry up. Obama’s making a big blunder here. He’s not buying as many votes as he thinks he is.
