Moore Wants More: Filmmaker Wants Funds For Flint Schools, District Spends 'More Money Than Ever'

Flint-area native and filmmaker Michael Moore recently placed some blame on corporations for the city of Flint’s financial woes and said the city ended up with a lower tax base and “not enough money for schools.”

But Flint Public Schools has never spent more money per pupil than it did in 2010, the latest year for which financial data is available from the state, says Michael Van Beek, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy’s director of education policy.

That’s because the district gets a large chunk of its money from the state and federal government.

According to the Michigan Department of Education, Flint’s general fund spending increased from $5,497 per pupil in 1992 to $14,058 per pupil in 2010. After adjusting for inflation, that’s a 65 percent increase. At the same time, the district's enrollment decreased by 57 percent between 1992 and 2010.

Well if fat ass mike actually lived in Flint, the city would have access to his ample revenue. If there was a sales tax on groceries, his tab alone could balance the state budget

Then give those pathetic schools some of your own money, Mr Obama-butt.

We can show the poor students your “documentaries”...thereby making them even more stupid than they presently are.

If Moore is interested in corporate greed he need look no further than government.

But he isn't really interested in corporate greed.

Share some of your 50 million with them and the problem is solved.

They are the 99%, aren’t they?

Michael grew up in lilly white Davison. If he wants more money for schools tell him to sell that 10,000 Sq Ft pad in Traverse City and donate.

So why doesn’t Moore lead by example and give his money to the schools? He could sell his mansion, sign over the royalties from his movies, that sort of thing.

I don’t believe the numbers. If you live in Flint, go over the budget - look for items that are school-related, but not in the school budgut.

Like school bond payments, city contributions to the teacher retirement fund, maintenance (SNOW PLOWING) of the schools in the park service budget, etc.

I did this in my town, and it turns out that the actual per pupil spending is right at $27k/kid/yr.

Then I compared it to local private school tuition - the only one that charged more included room & board for the student AND THEIR HORSE.

MM is typical of the government-centric mindset of the professional left.

Washington State is facing a significant (billions) budget shortfall. We were at a dinner the other night were the local State Rep was saying it comes down to schools or starving constituents. She said people do not realize how dire the circumstance have become.

The Gov, Queen Christine, has suggested reducing the school year by about 4 days as a budget cutting measure, one of several options including an increase (temporary of course) in the sales tax.

Fortunately for WA state it takes a 2/3 majority to pass tax increases. The situation grows serious and soon an impasse will be reached where government needs to decide, restructure like everyone else to deliver needed services much more efficiently. If they do not fix it they will become a little more than agencies to keep SEIU busy.

The day is closer than many think.
