One of the best ways to destroy American military capabilities would be to convince career military personnel -- both officers and enlisted -- that their commitment to service will not be rewarded with the retirement benefits they have earned by their faithful obedience to orders, no matter the personal cost or risks they endure. The Obama administration seems to be ready to destroy the belief that service will be rewarded as faithfully as duty was performed, one step at a time.
The latest step in that direction is the announcement that 157 Air Force majors will be terminated prior to retirement, without the opportunity to complete the 20 full years of service necessary to qualify for retirement pay. Caroline May of the Daily Caller writes:
The Chapman University of Military Law and its associated AMVETS Legal Clinic are blowing the whistle on what they say is an injustice set to be perpetrated on 157 Air Force majors on the last day of November.

I agree. There is so much pain ahead. I haven't figured out what I need to do to protect IRA funds from the calamity ahead. Where will be a safe place for assets? Should I just take the pain of paying taxes on such a sum?
I'm concerned that the economy is headed into a drop into an abyss of incredible depth. Imagine standing on the top of the Saint Louis Arch. Every day moves us further along toward the increasing downward slope. The effort to keep from sliding further down increases with every step until finally there is no stopping the plunge. The bottom will be only seconds away.
How far out on the edge are we with 15 trillion in debt growing by 1.5 trillion per year, perhaps another 50 to 100 trillion in underfunded entitlement programs, multi-trillions in underfunded public pension funds, and states and municipalities heading into bankruptcy.
The state of Illinois and a county in Alabama are examples of the next phase. Promised payments just stop. Unhappy recipients are forced to compromise, much like those holding Greek bonds. These 157 officers are NOTHING compared to what is coming.

The sequestrations
don't take effect until 2013, by which time we'll hopefully have the votes to handle the budget properly. That's one reason why the Super Committee's failure to reach an agreement doesn't matter — we're just as screwed as before, but not more so. We just need to take the White House and the Senate in 2012.

These are generally officers who have redundant skill sets.
Say you get out of college with a good degree, and you want to join the service.
If you are not from an academy or military college, and you are not ROTC....you had better be a doctor.
Otherwise the chances are 4 in 100 you can get a slot.

But I can be sure from your posts on this thread that you are an extremely unpleasant person.
When my company closed down, everyone in management received furlough pay which meant they had an extended year on their accumulated service. At the end of that extended year, if they were not yet 55, they did not qualify for retirement and the benefits that went along with it. However, they were VESTED in the company pension plan which entitled them to a reduced pension benefit at the age of 60........;
I suspect these released officers are entitled to Vested pension benefits at a certain age due to their years of service so they are not being left with nothing.......

They have no reduced pension to be given at a later date.
I think they get a severence pay of something like 20K, and are out the door.
If they want to get a federal job, their years of service will count, but that's it.
Something is really screwy here! Can’t help but comment that my sister’s husband was medically discharged after 14 years in the AF. His discharge was not combat related - heart attack and stroke. He passed away 35 years ago and she’s been living on his benefits ever since - never worked a day after she was married and never remarried so as to save those benefits.
If there is anger and a big ruckus over this, there should be! I agree with other posters that something big is coming our way with this administration in charge and it’s not going to be pretty!

But nothing like the purges back in the early 80's when the Marine Corps, bounced a bunch of late Vietnam Vets out.
I would think it would be easier to make O-5 in the Air Force than any other service because the standard unit, a squadron, has so many O-5 slots.Many squadrons have O-4 commanders and no O-5 slots. You're comment only applies to flying squadrons.

There's no such thing. There are Security Forces Squadrons, Mission Support Squadrons, Logistics Support Squadrons, Civil Engineering Squadrons, Communications Squadrons, Maintenance Squadrons and various others that often have Majors as commanders.
So, your point about the relative ease of making O-5 in the Air Force is gone.
I'll tell you this much, every O-3 and O-4 that was hit with the is RIF has at least a Bachelors Degree. You can't say that for the Navy though, can you?

My point is that in the Air Force the average fighter squadron has three times as many planes as a Navy squadron and is commanded by an O-6. The Navy unit is commanded by an O-5 and there are six-seven Navy squadrons in an Air Wing where you run into the first two O-6s.
As far as bachelor's degrees go, line officers all have degrees except for a small number of naval aviation cadets that have to get their degrees before they make O-4. We do have some limited duty officers that are brought up from the enlisted ranks for their technical expertise, but the vast majority of them have degrees.
Air Force fighter squadrons are commanded by O-5s. Where are you getting your info?

Before being in Special Forces, my son was in the 82nd Airborne in Gulf War I. I asked him what kind of guys were in that kind of unit. He said about one third crazies, 1/3 guys who liked adventure (his category), and 1/3 getting their ticket punched. Which I gather means serving somewhere dangerous/interesting to prepare for higher command. USNB—I guess my son is OK, he has been promoted to several levels of Sergeant, and I think they asked him if he would like to do Officers Candidate School. I think he said no because he is not tempermentally very diplomatic. Mostly says what he believes whether it is what you want to hear or not. After GWI he finished 4 years and went civilian, but was not happy with his job prospects. I asked him what was wrong, and he said, “You know mom, I like to get up at 6 am and run 5 miles.” So most civilian jobs were not his cup of tea. Eventually his Reserve commander coaxed him into reenlisting.
two nephews went to West Point.
One got out as soon as he’d finished his obligation.
The other got out after his 4 boys were born.
Just tired of getting jerked around.
One now a lawyer the other got his MBA from Gerogetown and works for IBM.
Both real smart boys who could do better in private business.

I think we may find that the RIFs may contain a low percentage of Obama-supporters, clearing the way for more Obama-supporters to make O-5 when the budget crises ends.

That assembled tall kitchen/whatever hutch I bought for a bargain price had been drilled for the back panel off-square
I had to remove the complete rear panel and square up the hutch by getting the diagonal measurements exactly equal - it took a while to do
Those unassembled units can often be above the purchaser’s experience and/or skills
I recall turning down several people that expected it was a simple fix after gave up or messed up the assembly “assembles in minutes with simple hand tools”

We put together the one I am using now, they can take some time and lots of crawling around on the floor, lol. My grandaughter said she would do it but I prefer to hire a person who is used to doing it, and I can complain if it isn’t done right later on.

Disagree. If that is the case, then any company, whether public or private, can just wait until every older employee reaches 58 or 59 (or 63-64, depending on the retirement age, and can their employee, thus screwing them all out of their benefits. Why not, if they can all get away with it? Never have to pay out benefits packages, just can the employee. And believe me, there are enough rat bosses out there to do it. Hope you are already retired, so that you don’t look unemployment in the eye, leaving you with no money in your dotage.

Then can them when they are younger and can start over in a new career. Not when they are a few years away from retirement. And the way the military is set up, you’ll be left holding the financial empty bag. Feel very lucky it didn’t happen to you, tough guy, or I suspect you’d be singing a very different song.
