27 worst nativity sets: the annual, growing list! (Humor - I think)
www.whyismarko.com ^ | 11/28/2011 | Mark Oestreicher

a few years back i posted a long series of bad nativity sets. last year i grouped them all into one post — 20 of them at that point — and it became my highest trafficked post of all time. but people sent me more and a stumbled onto a few myself. so… this year, the list has 27! merry christmas all, and enjoy or be horrified by this weird collection of nativity oddness.

the kitty cat nativity. makes me want to cough up a hairball.

the nativity kitchen timer:

the (peruvian) cowboy nativity. yee-ha!

yeah, the cat nativity is probably worse. but these dogs ain’t much better…

technically, not a nativity. but it’s a christmas lawn ornament, showing (can you believe it?) the flogging of jesus on the way to the cross. there’s some christmas cheer for your neighborhood!

How about a set about the birth of Mohammed. Think the Muslims would take it in jest like we do.

My God, that has to be some of the worst writing I’ve ever seen.

Tackier by far than the nativity scenes.

I guess I was raised “old school”. Most of the depictions just aren’t my cup of tea. It’s one thing to build your own nativity scene and quite another to “symbolize” baby Jesus as a kitten or a duck. To each his or her own... but I stick with more of the traditional types.

I’m sorry but that is really cute.
I would laugh so hard if one of my neighbors did that!

A lamb (IMHO) is mentioned in the bible so I would see that as interpretive. Thus, I wouldn’t have a problem at all. A kitten, duck, turtle... over the top for me.

We have a new kitten. You just inspired my kids to do a picture with our dog, our cat and the kitten in the manger.

LOL!

Nativity #15 appears to be the Veggie Tales characters so the figures would all be vegetables. The Veggie Tales series is actually very cute - they are singing animated vegetables who act out bible stories.

I think the concept of vegetables representing the Holy Family is a bit out there, however

The following observation is slightly off topic: the only place I could find a Nativity set for sale was the HallMark store. I did not see them at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or other spots in the mall.

Yes I had to purchase mine from a Catholic bookstore. Times are different - when I was a kid, every major retailer sold them. Sad.

A neighborhood in Austin is well known in that area for it’s annual decorations. Years ago, my wife and I walked the neighborhood to see the displays. Set up in the back window of a VW Microbus (this is Austin after all) was the “surgeon Mary and the little baby cheeses.” Barbie in a doctor outfit and a bunch of little cubes of cheese.

Yeah ... Austin’s weird.

Makes my Fontanini set look pretty tame, but my kids would love it.

I go to Ten Thousand Villages every year. I think that they are on line. It’s sort of PC but is staffed by volunteers from the Mennonite church and offers items for sale which are deemed Fair Trade. Very nice stuff. I did buy one nativity which I regret - its from Mongolia and is made of yak wool. Very ugly but interesting. This year my granddaughter at 11 is starting to become interested so I may take her and let her pick one out.

Costco and BJ’s both have very nice nativity sets every year. Maybe its a southern thing, I don’t know.

What ever do you mean? Vegetables can be very religious. Haven't you ever heard, "Lettuce, pray?"
