A black college student has won the fight to keep a Confederate flag in his dorm room after school officials initially told him to take it down.

“It’s not racist for me,” Thomas, a Georgia native, said in the video. “All it is is a symbol that I see as a sign of respect, and people don’t want to see it that way.”

Are black people allowed to have pride in their Southern roots? It may be legal, but it’s not politically correct. Southerners are supposed to be ashamed of their heritage, especially if they’re black.

Great story, especially his comments on how he came to realise through a class project that the flag’s meaning had been hijacked. And that people should CONSIDER THINGS RATHER THAN HAVE KNEE-JERK REACTIONS. This young man’s advice would serve a few freepers well on this topic. Just sayin’...

Back when I was in HS you'd see dozens of confederate flags at concerts of any one of a dozen southern bands popular at the time - in the SF bay area!

We had no idea of how insensitive we were being. /s

Good decision, however it’s not really a victory —does anyone really think that a WHITE guy would have been permitted this?

This is similar 2 the way it’s OK for black people 2 use a certain very bad word, but if a white guy says it, his/her career is finished —just ask Dr. Laura (who has disappeared).

Different rules for different people —one side-effect of the glorious trip from the melting pot to the “tossed salad”..

There’s more than a few black southern families with GG-Grandaddy’s confederate reunion flag secreted away in the attic.

Back in the early 1960s, Disneyland had hundreds of children’s Confederate kepis (hats) for sale with the Confederate battle flag on top.

I know that, and you know that, but stick around and we’re bound to see the morons commenting on how wrong it is for Southerners to be proud of who they are.

“This flag was seen as a communication symbol” during the Civil War.

Huh? I think it was seen as a flag during the Civil War.

God bless this young man. He is wiser beyond his years. I wish him the best success in his life. It is important to stand up for your ideals. I am a descendant of Confederate veterans. I look at it similarly. Slavery was a travesty but we must move past that (as our country has)and not try to erase history.

[from wikipedia] The 1st Louisiana Native Guard (CSA) was a Confederate Louisiana militia of “free persons of color” formed on May 2, 1861 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was disbanded in February 1862; ten per cent of its members joined the Union Army’s 1st Louisiana Native Guard regiment (later the 73rd Regiment Infantry U.S. Colored Troops). The CSA did not use this Confederate Native Guard regiment in any military action, and failed to provide it with uniforms or arms. Most of the men in the unit used their own resources to obtain weapons and uniforms which were displayed in a parade in New Orleans on January 8, 1862. When the Louisiana State Legislature passed a law in January 1862 that reorganized the militia by conscripting “all the free white males capable of bearing arms… irrespective of nationality”, the 1st Louisiana Native Guard was also affected. It was forced to disband on February 15, 1862.

Dayum! I'd be disowned by the black folks in my family if I ever displayed a Confederate flag. They're already pissed off that I'm a Tea Party conservative who moved to Texas, and wears a cowboy hat!
